We introduce the U-Campus (ubiquitous computing for campus) service. This study has been conducted through interdisciplinary research by four participating departments. The U-campus project is part of the UTOPIA project (Ubiquitous computing TOwn Project: Intelligent context Awareness), which covers town- and city-wide environments. Currently, a test bed for U-campus has been constructed to support various services suck as U-profile, U-messaging and U-campus tour guide services. Students, professors, school staffs, and campus visitors can easily access the various available campus services by using image-based sensors and mobile devices such as CDMA cellular phones or WiFi smart phones. The major purpose of this research is to provide a context-aware U-campus environment to users by utilizing sensors and mobile devices currently available in the public sector and the marketplace.","PeriodicalId":170872,"journal":{"name":"Second IEEE Workshop on Software Technologies for Future Embedded and Ubiquitous Systems, 2004. H.264 adopts various block types and multiple reference frames for motion compensation. When frames are skipped to reduce frame rates in transcoder, it is not easy to estimate optimum motion vectors and block types in H.264. A simple and effective block-adaptive motion vector resampling (BAMVR) method is proposed to estimate motion vector for motion compensation. In order to improve coding efficiency and visual quality, the rate-distortion optimization (RDO) algorithm is also combined with the BAMVR method in transcoder. In experimental results, rate-distortion performance and computational complexity of the proposed transcoder are analyzed for various video sequences. The proposed method achieves remarkable improvement in computational complexity compared to the full-motion estimation (ME) with RDO method.","PeriodicalId":170872,"journal":{"name":"Second IEEE Workshop on Software Technologies for Future Embedded and Ubiquitous Systems, 2004. The applications have covered areas such as home, office, and mobile. However, it tends to make ubiquitous system not based on scenario, but technology. In contrast, we firstly define targeted application at home such as u-media, u-healthcare, u-control and u-management scenarios. We focus on implementing context-aware home application. From these applications, we abstract technologies and system architecture required to be developed. We define the system architecture in order to easily accommodate context-aware information and to support new application.","PeriodicalId":170872,"journal":{"name":"Second IEEE Workshop on Software Technologies for Future Embedded and Ubiquitous Systems, 2004. This system integrates devices that are embedded or distributed in the user's environment and are networked with each other. The system for providing context-aware services locates and selects devices appropriate to the user's context. When the context changes while the service is being provided, devices for that service can be partially reconfigured without resetting all the parameters. We have verified the effectiveness of our technique in a prototype implementation.","PeriodicalId":170872,"journal":{"name":"Second IEEE Workshop on Software Technologies for Future Embedded and Ubiquitous Systems, 2004. We focus on a new approach, and the resulting architecture, for implementing positioning services over ubiquitous infrastructures. Our driving idea is to estimate zones where mobile devices operate measuring the power level of wireless communications for locating them. The proposed architecture is largely independent from the devices used and from the wireless communication technologies. We experiment the approach over a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":170872,"journal":{"name":"Second IEEE Workshop on Software Technologies for Future Embedded and Ubiquitous Systems, 2004. On dependability driven software and hardware integration 关于可靠性驱动的软硬件集成

Suri","doi":"10.1109/WSTFEUS.2004.10020","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/WSTFEUS.2004.10020","url":null,"abstract":"The functionality of embedded systems is increasingly defined by software (SW). As these systems face resource constraints - computational capabilities, power, space, cost etc - a natural consequence is the consolidation of diverse SW functionality onto shared hardware (HW) resources. Unfortunately, dependability is rarely an explicit design consideration over such consolidations. Focusing explicitly on provision of dependability, we propose a framework for structuring of SW functions to provide for desired dependability attributes as SW integrations transpire. A strategy for decomposing SW functions into conceptual error containment modules (ECMs) is proposed such that interference during SW interaction is (quantifiably) minimized. Subsequently, the rules of composition of ECMs for integrating software modules and HW-SW mappings can be developed via established co-design techniques. Overall, our aim is provision of \"dependability by design \" considering access to white-box SW.","PeriodicalId":170872,"journal":{"name":"Second IEEE Workshop on Software Technologies for Future Embedded and Ubiquitous Systems, 2004. The environments are called pervasive computing environments. To realize the environments, it is important to reduce the cost to develop pervasive computing applications by encapsulating complexities in middleware infrastructures that are shared by various applications. We present three middleware infrastructures for pervasive computing, that have been developed in our projects. These middleware infrastructures hide various complexities such as context-awareness and distribution to make it easy to develop pervasive computing applications. We also describe some design issues related to human factors that we found while designing and implementing our middleware infrastructures.","PeriodicalId":170872,"journal":{"name":"Second IEEE Workshop on Software Technologies for Future Embedded and Ubiquitous Systems, 2004. Typically due to different system requirements these components could be developed in different technologies which require a bridge for communication. With the increasing popularity of XML, it has become an alternative solution for data exchange in the real time application domain. XML has become the most important mechanism for data exchange between heterogeneous data sources. This paper presents a methodology for real time application data in XML. By defining a solid XML schema for the real time domain attributes, applications from diverse platforms can be based on the data definition and create instances of XML documents to exchange data.","PeriodicalId":170872,"journal":{"name":"Second IEEE Workshop on Software Technologies for Future Embedded and Ubiquitous Systems, 2004.
