This remarkable audio documentary provides the starting-point for this Chapter, which explores essential links between cooperative broadcasting policies, Woolf’s heightened acoustic sensibility in the 1930s, and the era’s awareness of itself as being, for the first time in history, dimensioned by reiterable sound. {"title":"Virginia Woolf, Carnal Hermeneutics, and Democratic Reading","authors":"Ariane Mildenberg","doi":"10.2307/j.ctv12sdxh1.9","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctv12sdxh1.9","url":null,"abstract":"“The Particle and the Wave” (2015), an audio/video/text performance by artist Himali Singh Soin and musician David, traces the distances between 1,265 semicolons in Woolf’s The Waves and creates sound waves as Soin performs over a video scroll-through of Woolf’s novel with improvised marginalia. The semicolons in The Waves are integral to the composition of this novel’s music, capturing the rhythm of life, thought, relations and expression.
