Khafaga","doi":"10.21608/jfehls.2019.92297","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21608/jfehls.2019.92297","url":null,"abstract":"This paper investigates three types of directives used in President El-Sisi's improvised speeches: directive questions, directive commands, and directive modality. The main objective of this paper is to test the hypothesis that directives, irrespective of their type, do not necessarily seek information (as is the case for questions), require a verbal/physical response (as is the case for commands), or prospect an obligation (as is the case for obligation modality). More specifically, this paper tries to show how certain presidential meanings are linguistically inculcated by a particular directive mood through which a cognitive activity is initiated on the part of the interlocutors towards the acceptance of certain arguments in a particular way. The two research questions in this paper are: first, what are the presidential meanings El-Sisi wants to inculcate in his addressees? Second, what is the effect of using directives in presidential speeches' context in relation to the exercise of meaning inculcation? This paper draws upon two analytical approaches: Speech acts theory instanced by directives (Austin, 1962; Searle, 1969, 1976) and Ervin-Tripp’s (1976) classification of directives. Two main findings are shown in this paper: first, El-Sisi uses directive questions, directive commands and directive modality to influence his addressees’ attitudes rather than to prospect and/or stimulate their verbal/physical performance. Second, directives are employed in the speech to initiate a cognitive link that operates as a communicative channel through which specific presidential meanings are intended to be inculcated. {"title":"Conceptualizing ‘Transnational Homes’ In Jhumpa Lahiri’s “When Mr. Pirzada came to Dine” and “Mrs. Sen’s”","authors":"S. Nasser","doi":"10.21608/jfehls.2019.92284","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21608/jfehls.2019.92284","url":null,"abstract":"One of the diasporic writers, who carry exceptionally genuine Indian feelings abroad, is Jhumpa Lahiri. Lahiri’s first book, a collection of nine stories, Interpreter of Maladies, was published in 1999. Her writings are described as “diaspora fiction” by many Indian scholars and was named “immigrant fiction” by American critics. Thus, it can be said that Lahiri’s fiction is a unique addition to the existing Asian-American Literature. This study examines the sense of home in Lahiri’s fiction from different perspectives in relation to human relationships and to the sense of place. A focus on the varigated meanings of “home” enables us to examine questions which are concerned with the human, social and personal costs of displacement and dispossession. Thus, this paper attempts to highlight important issues relevant to the human relationship with home, and to examine the ways in which the idea of home is present or absent in the stories analyzed. It poses several questions: What is the difference between the literal and the metaphorical sense of home? How does making a physical surrounding “home-like” help immigrants? And how can an immigrant turn a house into a home? These questions will be examined through an analysis of Lahiri’s “When Mr. Pirzada came to Dine”, and “Mrs. Sen’s”. The aim of this paper is to scrutinize the interplay between myth and discourse in O'Neill's trilogy Mourning Becomes Electra. In so doing, Corpus Linguistics is the research method adopted in this study. Keyword in Context (KWIC), frequency and collocation are three techniques provided by the software AntConc 3.5.7 (Anthony, 2018) and applied for data analysis. The interrelationships among characters, which are verbally portrayed as a linguistic manifestation of the Greek myth in discourse, are depicted through these tools. The untypical mother-daughter relationship has its atypical father-daughter/ mother-son counterparts that portray a tragic atmosphere shadowed by the gloomy scent of the Electra-myth. Discursive practices serve as linguistic realizations that bridge the gap between the mythical and the real.
