Despite the attractiveness of this new paradigm, its adoption has been stymied by cloud platform's lack of transparency, which leaves customers unsure if their sensitive data and computation can be entrusted to the cloud. While techniques like encryption can protect customers' data at rest, clouds still lack mechanisms for customers to verify that their computations are being executed as expected, a guarantee one could obtain if they were running the computation in their own data center. In this paper, we present the cloud verifier (CV), a flexible framework that cloud vendors can configure to provide cloud monitoring services for customers to validate that their computations are configured and being run as expected in Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds. The CV builds a chain of trust from the customer to their hosted virtual machine (VM) instances through the cloud platform, enabling it to check customer-specified requirements against a comprehensive view of both the VM's load-time and run-time properties. In addition, the CV enables cloud vendors to provide more responsive remediation techniques than traditional attestation mechanisms. We built a proof of concept CV for the OpenStack cloud platform whose evaluation demonstrates that a single CV enables over 20,000 simultaneous customers to verify numerous properties with little impact on cloud application performance. As a result, the CV gives cloud customers a low-overhead method for assuring that their instances are running according to their requirements.","PeriodicalId":169370,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Ninth World Congress on Services","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128066828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though users can easily transform a goal into multiple web interactions, the manual governance of these interactions diminishes the user experience. Personalized web-tasking seeks to improve the user experience by automating personal web tasks. This automation is driven by user needs, matters of concerns, and personal context. An important concern in personalized web-tasking is task simplification, the process of decomposing a personal web task into simpler tasks that can readily be composed into bigger tasks. This position paper characterizes a set of task simplification challenges intended as starting points for advancing the field of personalized web-tasking.","PeriodicalId":169370,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Ninth World Congress on Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125965351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are distributed, heterogeneous, autonomous and dynamic. These characteristics may make a composite service unstable and inflexible. To adapt to this environment, we propose a machine learning strategy that is developed for and applied to web service composition. This way, the composition framework continually learns which web service candidates are currently best suited to be selected and composed to fulfill more complex tasks. Since the learning process is not stopped, the framework is able to adapt its composition strategies to changing conditions in dynamic environments. A case study is given and the learning algorithm is evaluated and compared to the results of related work, which shows that our method improves the success rate of service composition.","PeriodicalId":169370,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Ninth World Congress on Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129097667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over time, it has been evolved into a global service platform upon which users perform transactional tasks. While web browsing is good for information retrieval and search, web browsing might not be the most optimal user model for web tasks. Tasks have defined sequences of sub-tasks advancing towards specific goals that require user input. Web tasks involve operations on resources that produce side effects. Web browsing typically involves read-only operations on resources. This paper introduces the concept of web tasking, applying the RESTful web application model of \"Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State\" (HATEOAS) on web tasks. It also introduces the notion of web task automations; pre-set conditions for executions at future points in time. It also discusses machine-operate goal-directed application state transitions as a part of task automation. The ubiquitous nature of interactions and monitoring of web tasking is also covered.","PeriodicalId":169370,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Ninth World Congress on Services","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124996262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data providers either publish global APIs to make data available, or \"sell\" and transfer data to clients so they can do whatever they want with it. Thereby, collaboration and B2B becomes limited and sometimes is not even feasible. Our technology implements the necessary mechanisms for data providers to enable their clients to enrich data models both with additional concepts and with new methods that can be executed and, in turn, published as new services.","PeriodicalId":169370,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Ninth World Congress on Services","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131859330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to obtain resources within a specific domain, a user manually performs several tasks, such as navigating through different web services, filtering according to various criteria and selecting the relevant results. However, the insufficient contextual information of the underlying application hampers the user's experience. In this paper, we propose a tool to improve a user's experience by automating the task of retrieving interesting resources in a multi user setting. We apply this approach to a chat scenario where users are exposed to resources that are of common interests by exploiting the users' personal context information.","PeriodicalId":169370,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Ninth World Congress on Services","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131791956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the reason of economic, the service deployment strategy is crucial for maximize the system utility and profit gained. In this paper, considered both the cost and quality, the service deployment in cloud is modeled as a congestion game, where every service has several components is considered as a player and his strategy is to select the subset of resources to deploy his components. Based on the congestion game, a game theoretic method is proposed to optimize both the overall cost and quality. To solve the congestion game, efficient algorithms are proposed to achieve the equilibrium in polynomial time.","PeriodicalId":169370,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Ninth World Congress on Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116266240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this architecture also introduces additional security implications. Client Virtual Machine (VM) instances running on the same physical machine are susceptible to side-channel and escape-to-hypervisor attacks. The timely prevention of intrusive behavior and malicious processes using signature based intrusion detection technologies, or system call level anomaly analysis is a very challenging task due to a high rate of false alarms. In this work, a behavioral modeling scheme is proposed to audit the behaviors of client VMs and to detect suspicious processes on the highest semantic level. Our preliminary results have validated the effectiveness and efficiency of this novel approach.","PeriodicalId":169370,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Ninth World Congress on Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128688717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally users are required to enter information into web forms to interact with the web applications. However they often have to type in the same information to different web applications repetitively. It could be a tedious job for a user to fill in a large amount of web forms with the same information. To save users from typing redundant information, it is critical to propagate and pre-fill the user's previous inputs across different web applications. However, existing software and approaches cannot meet this urgent need. In this position paper, we propose an intelligent framework to propagate user's inputs across different web applications. Our framework collects user's inputs and analyzes the patterns of user's usage. Furthermore it detects the changes of user's contexts by extracting user's contextual information from various sources such as a user's calender. Our framework clusters the user interface (UI) components to form semantic groups of similar UI components based on our proposed clustering approach. Knowing the similarity relation between UI components, the framework can pre-fill the web forms with user's previous inputs. We conduct a preliminary study on effectiveness of our proposed clustering approach. We achieved a precision of 80% and a recall of 87%.","PeriodicalId":169370,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Ninth World Congress on Services","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134106530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many businesses have started using cloud computing. A Service Level Agreement (SLA) between a cloud service provider (CSP) and a user is a contract that specifies the resources and performances that the cloud should provide. However, a CSP has the incentive to cheat on SLA, e.g., providing users with less CPU and memory resources than that specified in the SLA, which allows the CSP to support more users and make more profits. Unfortunately, there are no tools to allow users to verify the SLA. We study the important issue of verifying SLA in a semi-trusted (or untrusted) cloud. In this paper, we focus on the verification of CPU speed, which is an important metric in cloud SLA. We propose a lightweight stealthy test algorithm that can check if a CSP provides the CPU speed as specified in the SLA. Using real experiments, we show that the algorithm can detect cloud cheating on CPU speed (i.e., SLA violations) in a stealthy way.","PeriodicalId":169370,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Ninth World Congress on Services","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123816973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
