In addition to hundreds of person-hours in the past few weeks and several months of planning, donations of cable and equipment came from Cray Research, IBM, Digital Equipment, USWest Communications, Network Systems, Ultra Network Technologies, SynOptics Communications, Broadband Communications Products, Interop, Aquila Group, and Siecor to develop this unique example of the cooperation and networking envisioned in the National Research and Education Network (NREN). NREN is part of the President's High Performance Computing and Communication initiative, a bill that just passed in the House of Representatives and is currently in the Senate. The keynote address at the conference was given by D. Allan Bromley, Science Advisor to the President, who expressed strong hope that the bill would pass.","PeriodicalId":168438,"journal":{"name":"ACM Siguccs Newsletter","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122111239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These can be separated into four categories: computers, networks, audio/video, and control. All electronic equipment in the Teaching Theater is interconnected: the computers form a local-area-network which is also attached to the Campus network; the computer monitors, keyboards, and mice are interconnected via a signal-switching system; all A/V devices are connected to a video signal switcher which is connected to the computers and to the Campus video cable system; and the control system permits convenient operation of the computers, A/V, and room lighting.","PeriodicalId":168438,"journal":{"name":"ACM Siguccs Newsletter","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123782273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Countries such as the USA, Japan and Germany were at that time apparently doing much better. As a result, the Board set aside three tranches of £500000 at half yearly intervals to fund 23 pilot projects in the use of computers in teaching. This was supplemented by a further project funded by the Department of Education for Northern Ireland. In 1985, the University Grants Committee injected significant funds and, by 1986/7, the central expenditure on a total of 139 projects was £9.5 million. Allowing for university contributions above the central provision, the initiative brought together funds of approximately £20 million.","PeriodicalId":168438,"journal":{"name":"ACM Siguccs Newsletter","volume":"86 1-2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134052603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
