Three new definitions are added: timed history, timed transitions and a set of synchronization mechanisms. The proposed extensions are based on the major characteristics of some Petri net based multimedia models, and have their semantics described in the paper in terms of conventional statechart models.","PeriodicalId":168372,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The emphasis in Synapses is on developing standards to enable sharing, in whole or in part, of electronic healthcare records between distributed healthcare providers and institutions. The current technological solutions available for data sharing, including federated database systems, gateways, data warehousing, messaging and the web are insufficient on their own to meet the needs of Synapses. Thus in Synapses several different, but complementary technologies are merged in an open, distributed object-oriented environment. Furthermore, in order to safeguard the legal, ethical and clinical integrity of the record, it is essential not only to preserve the meaning of the data being transferred, but also its context and structure. Synapses solves this problem by defining a standard architecture for the federated electronic healthcare record.","PeriodicalId":168372,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This specification supports the same temporal relationships defined in the task specification, and what the related tasks are is precisely identified for each basic component. This method highlights significant aspects in task and architecture design and gives useful suggestions for developing user interface environments which maintain a focus on task-oriented aspects. We consider the possibility of supporting very flexible temporal relationships among tasks (concurrent tasks, tasks which can interrupt or enable other tasks and so on).","PeriodicalId":168372,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. In particular descriptions of the software architecture can be useful to drive integration testing, since they supply information about how the software is structured in parts and how those parts (are expected to) interact. We propose to use formal architectural descriptions to model the \"interesting\" behaviour of the system. This model is at a right level of abstraction to be used as a formal base on which integration test strategies can be devised. Starting from a formal description of the software architecture (given in the CHAM formalism), we first derive a graph of all the possible behaviours of the system in terms of the interactions between its components. This graph contains altogether the information we need for the planning of integration testing. On this comprehensive model, we then identify a suitable set of reduced graphs, each highlighting specific architectural properties of the system. These reduced graphs can be used for the generation of integration tests according to a coverage strategy, analogously to what happens with the control and data flow graphs in unit testing.","PeriodicalId":168372,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. In this paper, we propose an approach, called deadline driven conflict resolution (DDCR), which integrates concurrency control and commitment management in resolving data conflicts between executing and committing transactions, while at the same time maintaining the schedules to be serializable. With DDCR, many of the data conflicts can be alleviated, and concurrent execution of transactions is allowed to access data items being held by committing transactions. The impact of temporary failures occurred during the commitment of a transaction on other transactions is reduced by reversing the dependencies between the transactions. Simulation experiments have been performed and the results show that DDCR can significantly improve the system performance especially when the duration for the voting phase is long.","PeriodicalId":168372,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Client-access protocols for replicated services 用于复制服务的客户端访问协议

Existing systems that follow the State Machine approach concentrate on the synchronisation of the server replicas and do not consider the problem of client interaction with the sewer group. Client interaction is analysed and a number of access protocols are proposed to meet a range of client requirements. The paper demonstrates that protocols for the \"open\" group model-clients external to the group of servers-satisfy the requirements of the State Machine approach, even when replication is transparent to the clients. Experimental performance results indicate that the \"open\" model is clearly desirable when the service is used by a large, dynamic set of clients.","PeriodicalId":168372,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The state of the request is encoded in the states of their processes. This can lead to unnecessary complexity and hard-to-detect errors. This paper presents an architectural style, token architectures, that decouples data, control and synchronization. Tokens encapsulate the state of a computation. Service points manipulate the tokens and perform services for them. The tokens use maps to move between service stations. We show in an example how this style simplifies the design of a telecommunications application and what difficulties traditional designs must solve.","PeriodicalId":168372,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This makes it difficult to use the experience in future developments. This picture is worse when dealing with a family of products. The lack of documentation on the design decisions may preclude coherent evolution and development of products. This paper presents a framework for representing and supporting design decisions in the development of product families. The information is structured as a DDT (Design Decision Tree), where nodes represent design decisions and branches relate nodes to each other. The access to this information is based on HTML and WWW navigators. A simple case study is presented in order to illustrate the approach and to show its feasibility.","PeriodicalId":168372,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This makes software a key topic for the whole European industry, with strategic significance for global competitiveness. Furthermore, as the information age develops, software is destined to become even more pervasive and transparent across industrial sectors and user segments. The growing dependence of modern industry upon software products has been accompanied by the acceptance of software development into the elite of strategic business management issues. The efficiency and the quality with which software is produced is having a greater and greater impact on the profitability of the companies and on their ability to meet customer needs. Industrial success is now increasingly linked to an organisation's ability to produce software efficiently with consistently high quality. It is within this context, that ESSI (European System and Software Initiative) is supporting a set of preparatory, support and transfer activities, applied to the software technology domain of ESPRIT. These activities are concerned with the adoption of best practice in organisations working in any economic sector (both IT and non-IT sectors), which have software development capabilities and which regard software as an important aspect of their business. Any organisation in any sector involved in writing software may benefit from the adoption of best practice.","PeriodicalId":168372,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
