In addition to an overall light and relaxing design, the navigation bar was improved with a dedicated page for our conferences. Itwill work as a single point of access for reading about previous events, downloading preprints and registering for our future congresses and symposia. You will of course find all about the history of IADA, aswell as access to the Journal of Paper Conservation and a dedicated membership space where you can directly manage your account. Finally, you can find out about current events and discover useful links for your professional development, job opportunities and many more resources. An important feature for the Board was to make the new website design comply with the accessibility standards for inclusivity and diversity. We designed a survey, which we circulated via professional conservation networks. The feedback is formalized in this paper. The survey, consisted of multiple-choice questions; respondents were encouraged to leave comments in an open text option. The data collected were grouped according to general observations, practices regarding popular bleaching agents (hydrogen peroxide, light, and sodium borohydride) and individual comments from the respondents. In conclusion, bleaching plays an important, but not a dominant role in paper conservation practice. Those who bleach tend to apply well-known bleaching agents and pay attention to pre- and post-bleaching treatments. The results speak to a high level of awareness concerning potential negative effects, and a careful approach to the use of bleaching agents.","PeriodicalId":16666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Paper Conservation","volume":"111 1","pages":"140 - 150"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77864525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Brand","doi":"10.1080/18680860.2020.1932375","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/18680860.2020.1932375","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT The impulse for this article was the current publication ‘Book supports of open books in exhibitions. A guide for conservators and exhibition designers’ (Buchstützen für geöffnete Bücher in Ausstellungen. Ein Leitfaden für Restauratoren und Ausstellungsgestalter) (Brückle, 2019). This two-part article focuses on the special challenges of permanent—as opposed to temporary—exhibitions with their inherent preservation challenges and limited options for conservators within the overall decision-making process. The multi-perspective approach offers solutions contributed from two different professionals, i.e., conservators and exhibition designers. Part 1 presents a practical compromise developed by book conservators for protecting of books in permanent exhibition at the German Historical Museum Foundation Berlin (Stiftung Deutsches Historisches Museum – DHM) from light-damage. Here, the book conservators have developed the ‘facsimile view page’ as a combination of original book and overlying facsimile. Part 2, for a bigger picture, looks at a range of exhibition designs and presentation forms. Most importantly, by allowing a reduction in the number of items displayed, not only does exhibition design comply with the stated preservation goals, but it is also closely connected with the conservator’s work.","PeriodicalId":16666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Paper Conservation","volume":"104 1","pages":"109 - 117"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75399842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Measuring the carboxymethyl cellulase activity (CMCase) by 3,5-dinitrosalicylic method was used to assess the presence of active cellulase inside foxing stains. This was done on foxed paper samples and compared with five fungal strains (belonging to the species Eurotium herbariorum, Talaromyces atroroseus, and Penicillium minioluteum) with cellulolytic capacity, previously identified inside foxing spots, and a highly cellulolytic strain of Trichoderma viride, as a reference. The highest activity of T. viride, expressed as the reducing equivalent glucose released (mg L−1), is achieved at 26°C and in Czapek medium supplemented with carboxymethyl cellulase and sucrose. In the same conditions, for all strains, the activities reached their highest value on the seventh day and then decreased. The method was sufficiently sensitive to indicate the presence of CMCase activity inside foxing spots. These cellulase activities cause paper degradation even after the fungus dies, as the excreted enzymes remain active on the substrate.","PeriodicalId":16666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Paper Conservation","volume":"35 1","pages":"89 - 99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85246217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What is new? In addition to an overall light and relaxing design, we have improved the navigation bar, so that one does not lose track of the site map while navigating through the pages. There is now a dedicated page for our conferences, which outlines the programme and all the information about it as well as allowing you to download the page or to send the link to people who might be interested in the event. You will also be able to register and pay for the event without being sent to another website. The member’s directory and the page listing event relevant to IADA conservators are easier to browse, with tabs that clearly describe their content. Furthermore, you will be able to update your own address data or download your membership invoice directly from our new secure member area in the future. The events’ page is also more understandable and allows you to register and pay for the event without being sent to another website. We have a dedicated page with useful links for your professional development and improved the section for seeking a job.","PeriodicalId":16666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Paper Conservation","volume":"21 1","pages":"80 - 88"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81658960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet many in our field experience static funding compounded by the burden of additional administrative responsibilities. While continuing to focus on the treatment of collection items, we must also manage staff and attend to the preventative conservation needs of our collections. Bridging these worlds requires vastly different skills and types of focus. The author has tested a number of systems for expanding productivity while also serving in a multifaceted position as the head of a conservation department. After initially investing in digital technology to bolster efficiency she has ultimately found that selectively decreasing or eliminating the use of some forms of technology has, surprisingly, actually increased efficiency. This paper presents effective use of analog tools and strategies that boost not only management and conservation treatment performance, but also deepen work-life fulfilment.","PeriodicalId":16666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Paper Conservation","volume":"41 1","pages":"100 - 108"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84858785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Together they chart the early years of Bright’s career as a doctor and author. However, due to the very fragile condition of the paper, the information contained within the collection is at risk of being lost entirely. This article seeks to highlight the challenges when conserving very fragile folded paper items with the aim to digitize the collection. Through hands-on experience, adapting established and new techniques, some innovative approaches have been formulated to allow ease of handling and treatment. These techniques are demonstrated in this article to evoke discussion and expand on the ideas suggested.","PeriodicalId":16666,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Paper Conservation","volume":"46 1","pages":"57 - 64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78235557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
