Presented in this paper is a context-aware architectural framework, named \"Context Spaces\". The context spaces framework enables the development and research of context-aware applications by mitigating common issues associated with dynamic environments. The framework components include: a conceptual model, a protocol Application Message Interface for space based-distributed information sharing, and a method for context sharing between spaces named context acquisition.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124119267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This situation urges digital library systems to deal with XML documents as well as typical text documents. A standard query language is very helpful for interoperability among digital library systems over the Internet. XQuery is a forthcoming standard for querying XML data. We propose an XQuery engine that can be used as an XQuery processing module in digital library systems that support XML documents. Our system has the following useful aspects. First, any user interface that generates XQuery is able to access any digital library systems embedding our XQuery engine. Second, we define primitive operation trees (POTs) so that they can become a standard interface between an XQuery engine and an information retrieval engine. Third, some query optimizations over POTs can be done in the XQuery engine so that better searching performance is expected.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124545821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method uses image processing for computing structural similarity between the prepared sample images with sample indexes and query images based on visual features, and selects the sample indexes of the most similar image as metadata to the requested query images. The use of image processing allows cost-efficient implementation for content-based metadata indexing to visual objects.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121187961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We describe the ubiquitous service-oriented network (USON) architecture, a new service-provision architecture, covering the basic concept, components and their roles, and the service-provision mechanism. A USON provides services in two phases, a service-composition phase in which service elements (SEs) are combined on the basis of service templates (STs), and a service-emergence phase in which a new ST is obtained on the basis of the history of usage of SEs and STs. A USON can handle various types of SEs, representing Web services, computer resources, and sensor devices. The establishment of USON technologies on networks provides various services within ubiquitous-computing environments.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127402308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also addresses policy based QoS control and CDN management as implementation examples of proposed architecture. In broadband ubiquitous networks, this architecture enables content aware QoS control and automatic content adaptation to usage environment that are provided as network services by the use of policies, rules and network related metadata. Proposed metadata framework architecture is structured in two layers: metadata gateway and policy based service platform both provide open API to the next higher layer. Metadata gateway provides integrated metadata retrieval capability across various metadata descriptions, and policy based service platform provides specific functions common to content delivery such as QoS control and CDN management.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125485333","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
