We also have tried to realize a good remote lecture system for some graduate school classes. Our system is designed for lectures via large scale networks such as the Internet and JGN (Japan Gigabit Network), and also we are trying to add some media to the system, in addition to conventional ones such as video, voice, text and image data. This time, we propose a new remote lecture system which can also send information of pointed position with a special laser pointer on the screen in the classroom to each remote site PC. Using this system, students in remote sites can receive classroom view, lecturer's voice, diagrams and characters written on the white board, clear presentation slide images and moreover, the lecturer's pointing position, which is shown as a large arrow mark overlapped on the slides. We state system concept, whole system architecture especially for the case of using the Internet, and some technique for acquisition of pointing position information from the screen in the classroom and its distortion correction. At last, we mention that this system works well enough to provide good lecture quality for our graduate school classes.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133913036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite its strength, we still have only a few good method to support the concept. The author proposes a method of dynamic peer discovery (rendezvous) using very simple set operation on peer groups, based on Internet indirection infrastructure (i3) based on UPnP Forum (2000). To make rendezvous effective, it should be easy and efficient to make basic set operation among distributed infrastructure DHT nodes. In the proposed method, bloom filter is used to get intersection between two or more peer groups.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132288463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SPEARS WG of WIDE Project had already developed a system (2003), which uses RFID devices as a sensor of human's location. Purpose for this system is to provide the service based on a user's location in a conference. In this system, the model in which location of user is gathered and provided for each user was adopted. This paper describes several areas of problems and improvements in our latest implementation. The following functions were implemented by the addition of a system called \"Area-d\": 1) provide a service tied with a location, and 2) provides users' communication rendezvous service. These functions are able to add to the existing system without altering the existing model. This paper describes a location-oriented data processing model and applications.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133062039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a display-centric communication system, which is portable, interactive, and collaborative. The objective of \"dokodemo-display\" system is to increase the value of a place with helping to form local communities at that place. It provides information services localized to a certain place with a large display such as 32\" LCD. The display is integrated with several wireless communication interfaces for users to access the location- and profile-aware services easily with their own wireless devices. The display displays contents with interactive effects reflecting user actions. We have developed a prototype of that system, and deployed at our private shows. This paper also discusses the platform which is the basis of the system. It incorporates peer-to-peer technology and Web services to ease system design, development and configuration. This paper also discusses the problem unsolved to realize ubiquitous information systems.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"509 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133090025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In DSA, users can define and use global arrays that can be accessed uniformly from any machines in the network. Explicit management of array area allocation, replication, and migration is achieved by explicit calls for array manipulation: defining array regions, reading and writing array regions, synchronization, and control of replication and migration. The DSA is integrated with Grid (Globus) services. This paper also describes the use of our model for gene cluster analysis and molecular dynamics simulation. In these applications, global arrays are used for storing the distance matrix and atom coordinates. Large array areas, which cannot be stored in the memory of individual machines, are made available by the DSA. Scalable performance of DSA was obtained compared to that of conventional parallel programs written in MPI.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124581505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a distance classroom environment integrating synchronous and asynchronous video applications as a future employment of high definition, low latency video transmission technology. In the case of healthcare distance classes, spatial, directional and real-time timing information are as crucial as - sometimes more crucial than - high quality image reproduction. The prototype environment over the Japan Gigabit Network consists of a digital video conferencing and a video server containing modular learning materials. It enables nearly simultaneous presentation of learning materials among remote places and distance instruction in practical skills to some extents. The current prototype employs digital video transmission over the ATM layer, ensuring stable communication without delay. DV transmission over an IP network is now under examination, so that local residents and healthcare professionals can use the proposed environment for lifelong learning at healthcare and welfare institutions in future. This paper gives an overview, a description of features and actual usage examples of the proposed environment, and summarizes the problems to be solved.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133734943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, they have mainly focused on the throughput characteristics of a single connection or under a stable condition, and thus, more variety of throughput characteristics in actual network environments should be investigated aiming at practical use. Therefore, in this paper, the throughput characteristics of some practical high-speed transport protocols, high-speed TCP (HSTCP), scalable TCP, and simple available bandwidth utilization library (SABUL) with multiple connections or with changes of competitive traffic are investigated through experiments on the Japan gigabit network (JGN), an open testbed in Japan, using implementations available to the public. For TCP-based protocols, the influence of the receiver-side OS (TCP implementation) on throughput performance is also investigated, which is of practical importance from the deployment viewpoint. On the basis of the results of these experiments, some considerations on transport protocols for fast long-distance networks are given.","PeriodicalId":166094,"journal":{"name":"2004 International Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops. 2004 Workshops.","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133016671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this system, the retrieval is processed with two layers of parallel processing by dividing computing resources into logical clusters. The agency host submits the job of calculating similarity between an input protein and each active site in the database to every logical cluster in the Grid. Each logical cluster calculates the similarity using the MPI-based parallel program and returns the result to the agency host. We also present a method of suggesting a better structure pattern of logical clusters based on the estimation of the processing time for surface comparison in each logical cluster.
