The principal idea of the proposed time-series data indexing method is to encode the shape of time-series into an alphabet of characters and then to treat them as text. As far as we know this is a novel approach to 1D data indexing. In this paper we report our preliminary results in using the proposed 1D indexing method for retrieval of 1D data by its content.","PeriodicalId":166034,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third Basque International Workshop on Information Technology - BIWIT'97 - Data Management Systems","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124674551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In consequence, global integrity constraints must be dealt with by federated database systems. Although a lot of work has been done on transaction management in multidatabase systems, the treatment of semantic integrity constraints (e.g. uniqueness conditions), especially detecting (potential) violations and specifying necessary reactions, is often omitted. In this paper, we propose a very flexible way to realize global integrity maintenance in federated database systems. We aim at integrating the active rule paradigm into a federated database framework. Thereby, integrity constraints involving multiple component database systems can easily be supported. Active rules provide a powerful mechanism for communication and cooperation between heterogeneous database systems. In addition, they are to be used for specifying enforcement of constraints in case of violation. For enforcing constraints the existing local mechanisms (e.g. triggers) of the component database systems can be employed. In case this is not possible, an additional layer has to be introduced which realizes the active rule mechanism for the component database system.","PeriodicalId":166034,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third Basque International Workshop on Information Technology - BIWIT'97 - Data Management Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128754122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This database reverse engineering process performs (i) the extraction of n-ary relationship tables, and (ii) the deduction of cardinalities. The first step is based on querying a view of the data dictionary and some working tables. The second step is based on the automatic generation of a set of SQL queries for each n-ary relationship table. We focus on the realistic assumptions that there are no constraints on the uniqueness of the attribute names, and dependencies are not supposed to be known a priori. A PRO*C program has been implemented; it enables us to automatically build SQL queries via dynamic SQL. We also study the influence of the number of key attributes and the number of records upon the performance of our process.","PeriodicalId":166034,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third Basque International Workshop on Information Technology - BIWIT'97 - Data Management Systems","volume":"540 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124267255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is inspired from the data warehouse model of W.H. Inmon (1995, 1996). This new concept is the result of an operational application using an object-oriented database in a spatial industrial context. We present the application, BAGHERA, that inspired this concept, and which replies on the need to conserve the know-how of an enterprise. BAGHERA realizes the storage and organisation of all the data produced during the design phase of a satellite and facilitates database navigation with suitable methods and tools. The assessment of the object-oriented database, O/sub 2/, that is the data storage management component of BAGHERA is detailed. Research problems that are raised by this new kind of application are discussed.","PeriodicalId":166034,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third Basque International Workshop on Information Technology - BIWIT'97 - Data Management Systems","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122196605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This model relies on content meaning description of document elements. Meaning representation is distributed in the overall architecture model: it binds a semantic structure, a logical structure of documents and a domain model. The semantic structure contains two levels of description: meaning representation of information units. The description logic formalism is used to represent semantics of document elements and document rhetorical organisation. This paper shows how semantic structuring of documents can be efficiently defined using SGML syntax. Using this documents structuring norm, one can define two levels of description: generic semantic structure (vs. Document Type Definition) and specific semantic structure (vs. instantiated document) in order to define an abstract interface to the information stored in documents. The medical patient record has been presented as a relevant example for handling semantic structured documents.","PeriodicalId":166034,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third Basque International Workshop on Information Technology - BIWIT'97 - Data Management Systems","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133261222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The multimedia documents handle various type of information: medical images (X-rays, MRI, tomography...), data on the patient's civil and clinic identity, and examination reports. A retrieval process must answer to queries involving both the explicit alphanumeric data stored in the patient's dossier and information that are carried by the images. Content-based retrieval of medical pictures cannot be solved with a matching process based on image analysis. Thus we propose a data model for describing the semantic content of a medical picture. The image is viewed as pairs of isosemantic regions and signals in respect of an anatomic and a pathological model. This description is used to index the pictorial part of the medical record. A graphical interface is provided for the users to index the images and formulate the queries.","PeriodicalId":166034,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third Basque International Workshop on Information Technology - BIWIT'97 - Data Management Systems","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130343060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This means that object identifiers are not appropriate for the access to specific objects using a database language. In this paper, we discuss how the relational concept of a functional dependency can be adapted to object databases in order to get more convenient ways of fetching objects. Object functional dependencies are proposed allowing the determination of value-based identification criteria. For these constraints, different definitions of satisfiability are given based on a so-called validation relation. These definitions are related to different forms of identification.","PeriodicalId":166034,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Third Basque International Workshop on Information Technology - BIWIT'97 - Data Management Systems","volume":"21 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126047235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
