Ancient authors primarily mentioned field mice and house mice, which ate the grain, contaminated the land and food intended for humans and animals, and caused damage within the house and farm buildings. Most of the advice preserved from those times was on how to exterminate rodents, with only few texts providing recommendations on how to protect farm buildings and grain from mice. Ancient poison formulas primarily relied on poisonous plants and were usually served in cake form or added to food. There are some differences within the recommended poisons. More toxic substances were used in the farmyard and outbuildings than in the houses, which probably has to do with the risk that these poisons, due to their composition, posed to people and especially children.","PeriodicalId":165663,"journal":{"name":"Symbolae Philologorum Posnaniensium Graecae et Latinae","volume":"39 14","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141924415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A comparison of the inscription with the bishop’s will reveals many similarities between both texts. The fact that the authors of the inscription were also the executors of the will greatly influenced the content of the epitaph, as well as the entire appearance of the chapel. Both texts contain typical Baroque concepts related to the passing of time (vanity, theatrum mundi). However, while the bishop downplays the role of his earthly achievements in the will, the epitaph, according to the tradition of this epigraphic genre, belongs to enkomion (laudatio).","PeriodicalId":165663,"journal":{"name":"Symbolae Philologorum Posnaniensium Graecae et Latinae","volume":"47 32","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141923968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Referring to the manuscript tradition, it demonstrates that the heading before 406 and the marginal notation used to identify speaking characters may have been misinterpreted as a result of this notation having been erased from codex Etruscus, the main representative of one of the two branches of the manuscript tradition of Seneca’s plays. Next, it argues that because of the formal consistency of this codex reading (E) – as contrasted with the inconsistencies in A – and the fact that E makes satisfactory sense here, the reconstructed reading of Etruscus should be taken into consideration in future editions of Seneca’s drama.","PeriodicalId":165663,"journal":{"name":"Symbolae Philologorum Posnaniensium Graecae et Latinae","volume":"54 34","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141923608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Legislation is much celebrated in the respective philosophical cultures of Plutarch and Porphyry: in the former, the image of the ideal ruler reflects the notion of a philosopherking, while in the latter, it was attached with significance to life lived under the divine law of the Intellect of Kronos. This article will demonstrate how Plutarch and Porphyry jointly acknowledge the legislator’s legendary image as more than mediating between hostile factions of the citizen body and regulating divine worship and ritual praxis, often on the basis of his political expertise and divine ancestry by casting it in a fresh mold. In doing so, Plutarch and Porphyry together claim that the legislator’s legendary image plays a decisivly corrective role in ancient society by way of introducing the non-violation of animal life for food and sacrifice. This corrective role will be discussed as being pivotal for the intellectual pursuit of the priestly community and philosophers in selected dialogues in Plutarch’s Moralia and Porphyry’s De Abstinentia.","PeriodicalId":165663,"journal":{"name":"Symbolae Philologorum Posnaniensium Graecae et Latinae","volume":"10 25","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141925225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Written at the end of the 15th century, the work gained popularity and was eagerly imitated by other humanists (including Erasmus of Rotterdam and Eobanus Hessus). The epyllion, constructed according to the rules of ancient epic, is an example of the Christianisation of classical genres in the Renaissance. The article presents the life of the author and his views on Christian poetry, as well as a thorough analysis of the work. It provides the Latin text of Carmen, accompanied by similia, and its Polish translation, supplemented by a commentary.","PeriodicalId":165663,"journal":{"name":"Symbolae Philologorum Posnaniensium Graecae et Latinae","volume":"2 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141921286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Watching over someone (obseruatio, in the general sense) can take the form of close watch, spying, and voyeurism, and we try to identify where the transgression lies. As Plautus uses Roman social patterns to turn them into a comical game, the investigation shows how the playwright intertwines social aspects with comical poetics. Our starting point is indeed the situation of the slave Sceledrus in the Miles gloriosus, for which some critics have spoken of “transgression”, as “he saw what he should not see”. However, his position is ambiguous insofar as he did indeed receive a surveillance mission. As we examine Plautus’s plays, it appears that secrecy, with the ignorance that goes hand in hand, is the discriminating element between watch and spying. The speculator, the spy, observes the actions of another character unbeknownst to him. Yet it is this espionage that often highlights the transgression of the spied-on character, who commits a reprehensible or forbidden act. It is the case of some senes in particular, with their vice and decadence. When pleasure occurs in the process, we can speak to a certain extent of voyeurism. The ignorance, the limit and the intention of the beholder are therefore at the heart of the question of transgression. In this sense there is transgression in the case of the guardian of the Miles gloriosus only because the neighbour wants to defeat the guardian by accusing him of spying on his home. It is the trick employed by the neighbour and his sidekicks that transforms the legitimate «guardian» into a «transgressor». The real transgressor is the guarded figure, the courtesan, as are some senes in other Plautus’s plays.","PeriodicalId":165663,"journal":{"name":"Symbolae Philologorum Posnaniensium Graecae et Latinae","volume":"13 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138950225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the years they staged various plays of Plautus in order to prove themselves and their audience that certain themes and Plautine humour were not only still alive but also deeply emerged into the temporary culture. The main purpose of Sfinga has always been to familiarize their audience with Plautus and pay special attention to the care of ancient taste. The article discusses the following plays by Plautus: Miles Gloriosus, Amphitruo, Asinaria, Casina and Curculio.
