In this paper we propose a new and efficient computer aided algorithm for computing parameter sensitivities of turn-on and turn-off instants of power semiconductors for any given power electronic circuits. It is shown that sensitivities of switching instants of power electronic circuits are expressed in terms of parameter sensitivities of voltage and current values by using implicit function theorem. The adjoint network approach based on Tellegen's theorem is employed for calculating those sensitivities. The optimal circuit design method by making use of the sensitivity calculation is also developed. The method can be used to model magnetic circuits with any number of windings. The models incorporate adequate information about the correct distribution of leakage energy, the presence of gaps throughout the core, the arrangement of the windings, and the type of core used. Several commonly used arrangements such as toroids with uniformly distributed turns, and bobbin core structures with multiple windings were modelled with the new technique. A self-controlled synchronous motor known as a commutatorless dc motor, consists of a synchronous motor with a shaft position sensor and a inverter switched by the pulses from the position sensor. The inverter frequency is the functions of the motor speed, and in lower speed range during the synchronous motor starting period, the low frequency current leads to a rectangular waveform. Then, the current waveform produces torque pulsation. The combination of a resonant converter and a tapped-inductor converter is the basis of this new approach which represents an improvement on previous studies. The fact that the dc voltage gain of the resonant converter is a function of the switching frequency but not of the load nor of the duty cycle and the fact that the tapped-inductor converter is a function of the duty cycle but not of the frequency nor of the load, enables the two outputs to be regulated with only small switching frequency variations and with only slight interaction between the two outputs. The approach permits the construction of UPS systems of any desired power rating at maximum utilization of the power components. The method of harmonic cancellation decreases the switching frequency of the power devices while maintaining good dynamic performance. The design details of a 45 kVA UPS inverter system with 150 % steady-state overload capability are presented.
