This leads to a wide range of complications such as pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers are difficult to heal and require heavy medical attention. A widely used method of treatment is periodical turning of patients by caregivers. This is done to improve blood circulation and decrease the pressure on the skin. The regular turning of the patient causes an increase in caregiver burden. A study has found that 71.1% of caregivers suffer from low back pain as they do their job manually which affects their ability to care for their patients. On the long term, this causes a drastic decrease in the quality of life (QoL) of the patients. Alternative devices to the traditional method of turning are not available in the local market of Palestinian Territories. In this paper, a new design of a repositioning device is presented. The proposed device uses two rollers actuated by electric motors and attached to standard hospital bedding sheets, where the patient lying thereon can be moved as one roller turns. The design is intended to ensure the safety of patients and caregivers, and to fulfill the local market needs. The ease of assembly and disassembly was implemented through design as it improves the quality and reduces costs. The design concept was validated both using hand calculations and Adams simulation software. Both yielded exactly the same results. The device will function properly as long as the sheet moving acceleration does not exceed ≈2650 mm/s^2. Durability is another factor that was considered in the design. A full failure analysis was carried out. Device rollers were identified as the weakest parts. To avoid mechanical failure, a thickness of the rollers was selected. The selection was based on comparing Von Mises stress to the yield strength of materials. To validate the theoretical results, ANSYS simulation was carried out. It showed that a roller of thickness = 5 mm will be durable to expected mechanical loads. The presented design turned out to be sound and functions exactly as required.","PeriodicalId":164473,"journal":{"name":"2020 International Conference on Assistive and Rehabilitation Technologies (iCareTech)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120837058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reducing it would help significantly improving healthcare services by lowering the pressure on reception, focusing the resources on cases that need special care which could help to save their lives, being cost-efficient, and finally, it would provide a better life quality for the patients. Reducing the readmission rate could be done by studying the relation between the readmission rate and the factors of the patients such as age, race, number of diagnoses, and others. Many studies have studied this relation using different machine learning techniques such as unsupervised learning, which includes clustering algorithms such as k-means and supervised learning which includes regression and classification algorithms such as KNN, decision trees, and neural networks. This research uses a dataset of diabetic patients, which was gathered from 130 different US hospitals for years 1999–2008 with more than 100,000 instances and 55 different attributes to study the relationship between the readmission rate and other factors of the patients to determine the most influential factors that lead to a higher readmission rate and determine the most important factors that help to reduce readmission rate. Our novel solution consists of two stages, the first stage is developing predictive models for predicting readmission rates accurately, then use those models to identify the critical risk factors. As we experiment with different machine learning models, we report an accuracy of 53%, 35.7%, 35%, 11.6%, 50% on a held-out test set for KNN, Decision Trees, Random Forest, Support Vector, and deep neural networks respectively, and using ablation study we identified the top ten influential risk factors. As for the second stage, we reduced the computational time for training the machine learning models using the Spark cluster-computing framework to distribute the dataset across 4 workers to speed up the training process, and we report a 32% time reduction compared with running the models without Spark.","PeriodicalId":164473,"journal":{"name":"2020 International Conference on Assistive and Rehabilitation Technologies (iCareTech)","volume":"132 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133693984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, an accurate measurement of BP is vital for the prevention and treatment of these diseases, especially in hypertensive patients. Complications of untreated high blood pressure (HBP) might be heart attack, stroke, or kidney damage. It has no obvious symptoms or warning signs and therefore it is often called \"the silent killer\". The traditional manual BP monitor is difficult to use by ordinary persons and it requires the expertise of a specialist. The lack of these devices in every home prevents many patients from checking blood pressure regularly. In this paper, we describe our developed BP monitoring system, which integrates the Arduino board as an open-source computer hardware/software platform with the Android smartphone. The system is based on the oscillometric pressure waveforms method and it is combined with a Bluetooth module that transfers data to a mobile application. Therefore, users can get information about their blood pressure on the smartphone easily and get acquainted with their health conditions regularly. This system can be integrated into other devices such as ventilators because it is an open-source and there is a growing demand for the manufacturing of these devices locally. Experimental results are promising with BP measurement accuracy close to the reference values.","PeriodicalId":164473,"journal":{"name":"2020 International Conference on Assistive and Rehabilitation Technologies (iCareTech)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114545171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Blood is a vital, however limited resource in several treatments and surgeries. Unfortunately, people worldwide still die due to shortage in supply of requested blood products. In the same breath, expired (outdated) blood units is a medical waste such that its disposal is quite expensive to the healthcare industry, as well as environmentally unfriendly. Therefore, this research is inspired by the previous factors, and aimed at the satisfaction of blood demand whilst alleviating the outdating phenomenon of blood units. This deign has approached the discrete event simulation to model the inventory system of Al-Shifa Central Blood Bank (CBB) in Gaza city as a case study. O+ packed RBC and whole blood are the most problematic and challenging blood components among the other ones and therefore, this study is limited to them. The ultimate research objective is to identify the optimal daily inventory levels that minimize the outdating and shortage of blood units and their associated costs. Upon verifying and validating the underlying inventory model, it was obtained that the optimal target inventory level that minimizes and balances the outdating and shortage is 74.605 of packed RBC and whole blood units of the O+ blood type.","PeriodicalId":164473,"journal":{"name":"2020 International Conference on Assistive and Rehabilitation Technologies (iCareTech)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131859326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of Mulsemedia is the great engagement and immersive user experience it offers through the stimulation of more human senses than just audiovisual content (Multimedia). The paper aims to breakdown the Mulsemedia field principles, reported applications, and future potentials in a manner adequate for readers from technical as well as medical backgrounds. The paper starts with a review of Mulsemedia history and beginning of its growth. Later, fundamental Mulsemedia system architecture and components are presented. Moreover, the paper presents a description of the manner in which Mulsemedia systems mimic, stimulate and regenerate sensations reflecting the five human senses. This is followed by a review of several research and developmental studies that made use of Mulsemedia technologies in a wide range of applications with emphasis on its unique features and advantages. Focus is then turned onto a review of studies that reported using Mulsemedia in rehabilitation technologies, assistive technologies and several disability needs. The paper concludes with the most common recommendations found in the reviewed works, which can be summarized in the huge future potentials of research tackling the implementation and experimentation of Mulsemedia technologies for solving disability problems. The latter fact, offers researchers and therapists boundless choices when it comes to designing or applying new diagnostic, therapeutic or assistive methods for people with disabilities.","PeriodicalId":164473,"journal":{"name":"2020 International Conference on Assistive and Rehabilitation Technologies (iCareTech)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123140856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This requires studied and intensive rehabilitation programs that are mainly based on exercising to allow patients regain lost hand abilities. Factors affecting the success of the rehabilitation process include, severity level of the stroke, immediate start of the rehabilitation program, intensity of the program, patient psychological state and motivation. To guarantee effective results with traditional rehabilitation approaches, a lot of challenges are posed on patients, therapists, health service providers and caregivers. Recently, exergaming has been accepted amongst therapists and rehabilitation centres as an effective alternative approach that bypasses many of the aforementioned challenges. In this paper, a voice-operated exergame with a modified joystick that produces motion feedback is presented. The purpose of adding motion feedback is to activate the neuroplasticity for more effective and faster recovery of patients suffering from loss of hand abilities. The system development includes the exergame environment developed using Unity Game Engine and GAVPI software for voice recognition. Furthermore, the modified joystick hardware is presented, which allows for both ordinary operation and motion feedback from the exergame based on voice commands. The initial tests of the developed exergame system are presented with prospects given on potential future developments. The paper also gives a review of studies reporting use of exergaming for after-stroke ULs rehabilitation purposes.","PeriodicalId":164473,"journal":{"name":"2020 International Conference on Assistive and Rehabilitation Technologies (iCareTech)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133510470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides, the time of fracture to heal is influenced by several factors, including age, health status, nutritional factors, drug intake, smoking, and activity level. Generally, the longer the immobilization period, the more complication the patient encountered, which in turn influence physiotherapy management outcomes. The 3D printing is a novel procedure, increasingly emerging and has been introduced into medical practice owing to its unique characteristics over conventional procedures; it contributed to the enhancement of patient treatment’s satisfaction levels and functional outcomes, due to the lightweight, well-ventilated, waterproof, and cosmetically pleasant characters. Literature indicated that utilization of 3D Printed cast for fracture immobilization has resulted in improving physiotherapy outcomes; “Patient satisfaction Questionnaire” and the “Wearability evaluation of 3D printed and POP” indicated improving the rate of patient satisfaction with the mentioned procedure. Additionally, the results of the “patient-rated wrist evaluation” questionnaire indicated that utilization of the 3D cast resulted in significant decrease of wrist pain and improvement of activities of daily living. Multiple varieties of software, hardware and materials are available for producing the 3D printed cast, where engineers selected the most appropriate depending on the intended cast in term of durability, load to withstand and patient experience. Thus, utilization of 3D printed casts as an alternative to conventional fracture immobilization modalities has resulted in significant improvement of physiotherapy outcomes. Therefore, it is recommended that healthcare facilities to adopt the 3D printed products in an attempt to enhance medical and physiotherapy outcomes.","PeriodicalId":164473,"journal":{"name":"2020 International Conference on Assistive and Rehabilitation Technologies (iCareTech)","volume":"206 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132130615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Numerous wearable devices have been developed for detecting physiological signals and monitoring of physical activities which strongly affect the quality of human life. The gait pattern of an individual strongly depends on their occupation, mood and age. Gait and posture monitoring is important for muscle assessment and motion, joint kinematics and physical examination. Such monitoring helps to prevent work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) and chronic disability in elderly people due to the gait disorders and related fall incidents.
