Malik, Chenxi Sun, Gao-Yuan Zhang","doi":"10.1007/s44265-023-00022-1","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s44265-023-00022-1","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract Information and communication technology (ICT) has witnessed a surge in student enrolment and publications, reflecting its increasing demand and supply. However, the literature has largely overlooked the wellbeing and satisfaction of students pursuing ICT education. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining students’ satisfaction levels in response to abstract and concrete disciplines within the ICT field across Chinese universities. Drawing upon a sample of 893 universities based on 31 disciplines and spanning 31 provinces, the authors employ a multilevel mixed-method approach. With a dataset of 3,507 observations, self-reported surveys were conducted to gauge student satisfaction. The findings of this study reveal that abstract disciplines in the ICT field contribute to higher levels of student satisfaction compared to concrete disciplines across Chinese universities. These results highlight the importance of considering the abstract-concrete dimension in shaping students’ educational experiences and overall satisfaction within the ICT field. This study provides valuable insights for educational institutions, policymakers, and stakeholders in the ICT education domain to enhance students’ wellbeing and satisfaction. By recognising the impact of discipline abstractness on student satisfaction, universities can tailor their programs and curricula to meet students’ evolving needs and preferences, ultimately fostering a more positive and fulfilling educational environment in the ICT field across Chinese universities.","PeriodicalId":164365,"journal":{"name":"Digital Economy and Sustainable Development","volume":"174 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135161521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent studies have shown that the effects depend on a wide variety of factors including the level of economic and financial development, the type of financial flows (debt or equity), the direction of flows (inflows or outflows), and the existence of the investment or saving constraint with the economy. In this paper, we implement a model that embodies double threshold effects where the thresholds are defined in terms of (i) per capita GDP and (ii) the economic growth rate. The results support the single threshold of the growth rate, which is expected to capture the existence of the investment or saving constraint with the economy. We find that developed and slowly developing economies are likely to benefit from capital outflows for higher investment incomes whereas emerging economies with growth rate higher than 3.4—5.7 percent can successfully take advantage of financial integration and resulting capital inflows. The findings are robust to changes in variable definition, model specification and data selection.","PeriodicalId":164365,"journal":{"name":"Digital Economy and Sustainable Development","volume":"32 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135113059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Utilizing a narrative review methodology, the study examines a range of scholarly articles and publications to identify key themes, findings, and future directions in green finance. The review emphasizes the crucial role of substantial investments in green and low-carbon initiatives to address climate change effectively and promote sustainable economic growth. It highlights the necessity of robust regulatory frameworks that facilitate the availability of green finance and the integration of carbon–neutral practices. Additionally, the paper explores the potential of impact investing, wherein investors accept lower financial returns in exchange for non-financial benefits in green finance. It underscores the influential role of institutional ownership in guiding companies toward enhanced environmental and social performance. Moreover, integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors in investment decisions is critical for sustainable finance. Addressing the intersection of climate change and risk management, the review highlights the implications of environmental risks on financial decision-making. Effective communication strategies can raise public awareness and support for climate policies. The study concludes by calling for collaboration, further research, and policy measures to advance green finance and foster sustainable economic growth. It recommends aligning financial incentives with sustainable outcomes, fostering transparency, and incorporating social equity in green finance initiatives to contribute towards achieving sustainable development goals and promoting a greener future.","PeriodicalId":164365,"journal":{"name":"Digital Economy and Sustainable Development","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135511076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This comprehensive study delves into an intricate analysis, utilizing data gathered from 140 prefecture-level cities across China. Its principal aim is to dissect the effectiveness of strategies aimed at carbon reduction and fiscal policies within the multifaceted canvas of China’s urban metamorphosis, where the pursuit of high-caliber economic development takes precedence. The findings can be succinctly summarized as follows. Firstly, a statistically significant inverse correlation exists between high-quality economic development and carbon emissions in China’s urban centers. Secondly, when comparing resource-based cities to their non-resource-based counterparts, the former’s high-quality economic development plays a more prominent role in fostering carbon emission reduction. Finally, fiscal policies emerge as pivotal “accelerators” for advancing carbon emission reduction through high-quality economic development. However, their efficacy exhibits notable variations. It is essential to note that the moderating effect of environmental protection expenditures lacks statistical significance in resource-based cities and northern cities. Furthermore, the regulatory influence of resource taxation in southern cities is yet to be firmly established. This study provides practical policy recommendations for optimizing China’s eco-friendly fiscal system. These recommendations not only contribute to the realization of a green transition model for economic development but also serve as a valuable reference for governmental design of carbon emission reduction policies.","PeriodicalId":164365,"journal":{"name":"Digital Economy and Sustainable Development","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135739317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It conducts related robustness tests, mechanism analysis, and heterogeneity analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of the intrinsic relationship between digitalization and firm performance. The empirical findings demonstrate that digital transformation has a significantly positive effect on firm performance. More specifically, rising digital transformation of enterprises leads to an improvement in their operation efficiency. The research further reveals that digital transformation mainly promotes the efficiency of capital-labor allocation, which in turn enhances firm performance. Overall, our study adds to the existing literature by offering empirical evidence on the relationship between digital transformation and enterprise operation efficiency, providing valuable insights for practitioners and policymakers.","PeriodicalId":164365,"journal":{"name":"Digital Economy and Sustainable Development","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135343188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, the experiences of the introduction of the telegraph and the telephone provide certain parallels with newer ICTs. Their history is full of promises – and sometimes fears, that did not materialize. New ICTs have often been praised to massively transform our economies, and to be the foundation of a new and more sustainable mobility regime. But will they? And if so, how could ICTs help building it? This paper reviews the literature on the connection between ICTs and mobility and shows that ‘older’ ICTs have transformed our mobility regime in significant and unpredictable ways. In particular, they have supported and made more efficient new transport modes. They also contributed to the geographical concentration and dispersion trends of economic activities and changed how and how much we connect to our families and friends. Thus, ICTs can help building a more sustainable mobility regime, for instance by making transport more efficient or reducing mobility demand. Overall, the interactions between mobility and ICTs turn out to be important, diverse and complex.","PeriodicalId":164365,"journal":{"name":"Digital Economy and Sustainable Development","volume":"62 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134958135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
