The project includes dashboards with visualizations and tools which show the gaps in terms of concepts not represented or not shared across languages. The dashboards are built on datasets generated for each of the more than 300 language editions, with features that label each article according to different categories relevant to overall content diversity. Through various examples, we show how the tools encourage and help editors to bridge the gaps in Wikipedia content. Finally, we discuss the project's impact on the communities and implications for the Wikimedia movement, in a moment in which covering diversity is considered strategic.","PeriodicalId":163498,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 16th International Symposium on Open Collaboration","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115558629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The impacts of the participation bias on content may be expressed through a number of different behaviors. This research considers potential content biases that may result from efforts to delete content. We collect deletion data on a sample of article pages selected based on a method designed to identify content of likely interest to a specific group of people; men and women in this case. The analysis illustrates that there does not appear to be a systematic bias resulting in more deletions or nominations for deletions against content of likely interest to women. We consider how these results improve our understanding of bias and the ways peer production systems can mitigate the potential for biases.","PeriodicalId":163498,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 16th International Symposium on Open Collaboration","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132410158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the advent of the Internet and crowd-sourced knowledge building portals such as Wikipedia, Stack Exchange, Quora, and GitHub, information is just a click away. It is interesting to observe that the crowd builds these information repositories and not the experts. Information accumulation on a wiki-like portal and discussions on the QnA forum function independently as collaborative knowledge building practices. There is a need to understand the best possible practices to acquire and maintain knowledge in such crowdsourced portals. In this paper, we introduce QWiki, a novel approach of integrating a wiki-like portal and a QnA forum, seeking the union of aforementioned independent collaborative practices. The experimental analysis demonstrates that QWiki helps in knowledge acquisition and knowledge building process. The proposed model highlights the importance of interaction between a wiki-like portal and a QnA forum.","PeriodicalId":163498,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 16th International Symposium on Open Collaboration","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126463779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While in some cases these conflicts improve the output, they also lead to increased overhead. This requires examining the dynamics of these conflicts with the help of underlying data. In Wikipedia articles, the conflicts are captured by edit wars which may be examined through the revision history of these articles. In this work, we perform a systematic analysis of the conflicts present in 1,208 controversial articles of Wikipedia captured in the form of edit war sequences. We examine various key characteristics of these sequences and further use them to estimate the outcome of the edit wars. The study indicates the possibility of devising automated coordination mechanisms for handling conflicts in collaborative spaces.","PeriodicalId":163498,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 16th International Symposium on Open Collaboration","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114026910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
