Herein, we first analyzed the stability of the system linearized near the equilibrium point. From its results, we reconfirmed the knowledge that porpoising occurs when the system becomes unstable in the vicinity of the equilibrium point. We also found that the system became unstable as the thrust or trim angle of the outboard motor decreased. This finding was consistent with the results of a full-scale craft test performed in a previous study. Second, we confirmed that the limit cycle which is a result of the nonlinearity of the system was stable. The two analyses indicate that porpoising corresponds to the supercritical Hopf bifurcation. Furthermore, in the vicinity of the bifurcation point, it was found that stable equilibrium points and stable limit cycles can coexist. Finally, we confirmed this phenomenon in the full-scale test.</p>","PeriodicalId":16334,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Marine Science and Technology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.6,"publicationDate":"2023-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138534665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method combines the existing idea of the Nonlinear Correction (NLC) method, which is based on wave height-dependent RAO, with the theory of the translation process, and thus has both simplicity and a clear theoretical background. Furthermore, it is positioned as an extension of the Equivalent Design Wave (EDW) method used in conventional ship structural design. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed through a numerical study on the extreme value distribution of hull-girder sectional forces considering body nonlinear effects. The proposed method can be used for various purposes, and in particular, it can reduce the computational demand for strength evaluation by Direct Load and Structure Analysis (DLSA), which is a computationally extensive analysis method. Therefore, the proposed method is expected to make a significant contribution to structural design.","PeriodicalId":16334,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Marine Science and Technology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135041688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems employ the temperature difference between surface ocean waters and deep ocean waters to drive a thermodynamic cycle and produce electricity. The temperature of deep ocean waters, approximately 1000 m below the surface, is approximately 4 °C, while surface ocean temperatures typically range between 20 and 30 °C. The generated power of OTEC systems is dependent on these temperature differences and may vary with changes in surface ocean temperatures. In this study, the main focus is to find the impact of temperature variation on the failure rates of OTEC system components and the generated power output of these plants. The findings indicate that as the demand for the power system increases, its reliability decreases. In order to improve the reliability of the power system, the integration of a new generation unit, such as the close cycle OTEC power plant under investigation, could be necessary. The findings also indicate the importance of considering temperature variation in the evaluation of the reliability of such types of power plants based on renewable energy.","PeriodicalId":16334,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Marine Science and Technology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135634067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, accurate state estimation in real time is one of the most important technologies. In the ship and ocean engineering fields, there have been many studies on state estimation using nonlinear Kalman filters. Several methods have been proposed for nonlinear Kalman filters. However, there is insufficient verification on the selection of which filter should be applied among them. Therefore, this study aims to validate the filter selection to provide a guideline for filter selection. The effects of modeling error, observation noise, and type of maneuvers on the estimation accuracy of the unscented Kalman filter () and ensemble Kalman filter () used in this study were investigated. In addition, it was verified whether filtering could be performed in real time. The results show that modeling error significantly impacts the estimation accuracy of the and . However, the observation noise and types of maneuvers did not have an impact like the modeling error. Thus, we obtained the guideline that and should be used differently depending on the required computation time. We also obtained that keeping the modeling error sufficiently small is essential to improving the estimation accuracy.","PeriodicalId":16334,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Marine Science and Technology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136161047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
