Almost overnight, higher education institutions had to move to distance teaching to ensure that learning occurs even in the midst of a lockdown (Marinoni, van’t Land & Jensen, 2020, p. 23). However, this move depended by and large on availability of information, communication infrastructure, technological devices, internet connectivity as well as capacities to teach online (ibid., pp. 24–26). The reaction of the University of Catania, like all Italian universities, in responding to the emergency of COVID-19 was immediate. The goal, declared by the Minister of Universities and Research, Prof. Gaetano Manfredi, is that no student should miss classes and examinations. As in other parts of the world, this was followed over the coming weeks by closure of most sectors of Irish society in \"unprecedented actions to respond to an unprecedented emergency” (Doyle, 2020). These are indeed ‘critical times’ as the title states in more than one sense. Critical for population health in the short and medium term certainly, but also critical for us as adult educators in how we manage our being and doing as we transition from proximity to remoteness and distance.
