Such analysis requires a certain level of system modeling. The main system components models are the synchronous machine, excitation system and the Power System Stabilizer. The Matlab/Simulink is used as a programming tool to analyze the system performance. According to the system performance a proper design for the Power System Stabilizer (PSS) using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is carried out. Then the designed PSS is implemented in the model and the dynamic system response is analyzed. Since the simulation results without the PSS showed unacceptable system response, the system response with the PSS has improved and the PSS succeeded to stabilize an unstable system.","PeriodicalId":163141,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122541189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main function of the system is to sense TTL logic level transitions on a designated data logging input of a PIC 16F628A microcontroller from MicrochipTM, and store the resulting logic state either as an ASCII 1 for a 5 volt d.c. input or an ASCII 0 for a zero volt input; together with a time/date stamp, also in ASCII format, of when the transition occurs. The time/date stamp requirement necessitated the development and addition of real-time clock/calendar functionality to the system, complete with three types of alarms (once only, once every day, and once every week). The alarm clock/calendar forms the data logger's auxiliary everyday function, thereby making the data logger always useful. This is considered by the author to be somewhat a novelty. The ever-prevailing issues of energy efficiency, size, weight, cost, and durability in remote data logging applications motivated this research, which has resulted in a data logger that owes virtually all its functions to the microcontroller through the use of proficiently developed firmware; thereby providing a low component count, which positively addresses the aforesaid issues to a large extent.","PeriodicalId":163141,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"53 21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128495005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Evaluation and simulations are based on real lightning data collected from the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) from 1998 to 2008. The presented feeder is an overhead distribution line with a covered conductor subjected to indirect lightning strokes to ground and direct lightning strokes to a line support. Evaluation of induced overvoltage from indirect stroke to the line is analyzed with MATLAB. With the Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP), simulations of lightning strokes are performed with different lightning current characteristics. All cases are considered with the modelling guidelines for fast transients as specified in some lightning literature. The appropriate frequency responses of power supplies have been shown to be highly effective tools in design and validation processes. This trend has yielded a number of different fast low-cost applications for obtaining the characterizing frequency responses. The unique requirements of power supplies in excitation design procedure have been understood and fast correlation-based techniques have been developed. However, the properties of the presented methods and the applied excitations have not been fully recognized and consequently, the obtained frequency responses have been often inaccurate. This paper proposes several improvements to the previously presented methods. Spectrum method, binary excitation with ideal Dirac delta function, multisampling technique and automated excitation signal design are proposed. The theory behind the proposed improvements are first reviewed and then their effect is demonstrated with practical measurements from a high-frequency switched-mode converter.","PeriodicalId":163141,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115837922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most existing CAPTCHA challenges are a single challenge response system (CR) that provide ready-made answers to the users in which case a bot may answer the test and escape scot-free. In single response systems, a user is provided the options of either providing already made answer to the test or solving a simple mathematics question such “1+1” which requires the user to do some computation. In this paper, a Multiple Challenge-Response system call M-CR CAPTCHA mechanism is proposed. Here a user is expected to respond to multiple questions before access is granted; thus making the system more robust than existing single challenge-response systems. The system can thus be used to double checked against masquerading. Humans can solve the multiple challenge quickly and accurately while it will be computationally costly for a bot to solve it. Experiments on the developed system revealed that users who understand the purpose of CAPTCHA code advocate a dual layer CAPTCHA security mechanism and enjoy more robust security using the multiple CAPTCHA system.","PeriodicalId":163141,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116674596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several studies and methodologies towards improving e-Learning have been proposed and provided. However, not too many works are dedicated to the design and implementation of e-Learning for the visually impaired learners. Sight challenge is a serious form of disability, yet, the existing e-Learning platform (web, mobile, etc) have not devoted enough attention to the plight of the visually impaired particularly in the area of usability. The objective of this paper is to present an intelligent speech-based e-Learning system with dual interface -Voice User Interface (VUI) and Web User Interface (WUI). Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) was engaged to provide intelligent services. Voice Extensible Markup Language (VoiceXML) was used to develop the VUI, Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) for the WUI and Apache as the middle ware. The VUI and WUI are accessed through mobile phone by dialing a telephone number and the WUI using the Internet respectively. The e-Learning system will especially be useful for students who are visually impaired and those with dyslexia ailment that make reading, writing and spelling difficult. The application will complement the existing e-Learning systems such as web-based learning, m-Learning and others.","PeriodicalId":163141,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128701574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, to physically disabled people who can only depends on wheelchair for their daily movements this freedom is out of reach. Ability of wheelchair users and the access methods used in driving these wheelchairs vary. Variety of users therefore requires systems that are adaptable for many types of access devices. Authors of this paper believe that safety of wheelchair users depends not only on the type of controller used, but also on the model used. As a result a real life wheelchair dynamic model that accounts for uphill and downhill gravitational disturbances, frictional forces and slipping effect is considered in this work. Euler Lagrange procedure is applied in the derivation of the equations of motion of the wheelchair model used in this paper. To imitate a normal wheelchair and develop a system that is adaptable to nearly every access device considered, input-output feedback linearization has been applied in tracking linear velocity and angular orientation and in the development of the control law applied in this model. The developed controller successfully tracks and maintains desired angular orientation and linear velocity of the wheelchair before and after slipping.","PeriodicalId":163141,"journal":{"name":"2009 2nd International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129583542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
