It was first identified in Wuhan City, China, in December 2019 and has resulted in an ongoing pandemic. As of September 15, 2020, more than 26.5 million cases have been reported across the world, with more than 873,000 deaths. As SARS-CoV-2 is highly infective through air-borne contamination, the risk of infection in the dental setting is a serious problem for dental professionals as well as patients. The article provides information on this virus transmission and emphasizes the safety protocols to be followed before, during and after dental treatment.","PeriodicalId":163007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Academy of Dental Education","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130735038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These are largely due to the direct effect of cancer but may also result from the complication of treatment modality undertaken to cure the malignancy. This article elaborates on complications of the chemotherapeutic agents, which when employed to combat cancerous cells, may target the host cells. The oral complications of such a therapy results in several conditions like oral mucositis, infections, hemorrhage, salivary alterations, dysgeusia, lichenoid reactions amongst others. Thus, an in-depth understanding of these complications is a must in order to provide better care for an already frail and ailing patient.","PeriodicalId":163007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Academy of Dental Education","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121021633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This can cause deleterious effects on the growth and development of the jaws and teeth when occurred in childhood. Recurrence of TMJ ankylosis is a known complication. Studies have contributed to the various treatment options in recurrent ankylosis. The causes of reankylosis of TMJ are due to inadequate gap arthroplasty, insufficient interpositional material, adhesion, and elongation of the coronoid process. This case report is about a 6-year-old female child who is not able to open the mouth. The child was diagnosed with TMJ reankylosis. The treatment consisted of gap arthroplasty with dermis-fat graft along with bilateral coronoidectomy followed by vigorous physiotherapy. Later, full-mouth rehabilitation with speech and functional therapy and psychological counseling was done. Treating TMJ ankylosis is challenging as it has technical difficulties and a high incidence of recurrence. Hence, the treatment is always a multidisciplinary approach inclusive of an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a pediatric dentist, and a psychologist and a physical therapist.","PeriodicalId":163007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Academy of Dental Education","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126819754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Invasive treatments in very young children and children with special health care needs require advanced pharmacological behaviour management strategies. A minimally invasive treatment modality to arrest caries is by application of 38% Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). Besides its efficacy to arrest decay, SDF is favoured by its inexpensiveness. This review enlightens the evolution, historical background, mechanism of action, clinical considerations, advantages and disadvantages of Silver Diamine Fluoride.","PeriodicalId":163007,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Academy of Dental Education","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130871498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
