It is particularly challenging to determine network capacity when combined with other performance objectives such as timeliness. This paper investigates real-time capacity for event-driven data-gathering sensor networks with the unbalanced many-to-one traffic pattern. First, we compute the average allowable throughputs of nodes for a given event distribution, based on which we then leverage results of queuing theory to estimate the per-hop delays. We develop a new slack time distribution scheme for the unbalanced many-to-one traffic pattern, and prove it optimal in terms of the per-hop success probability. Here the per-hop success probability is defined as the probability for a packet to meet its sub-deadlines at each hop. Finally, we define the network-wide real-time capacity, i.e., given a threshold for the per-hop success probability, how much data (in bit per second) can be delivered to the sink node meeting their deadlines. For these research results, we provide some application scenarios, including configuring packet deadlines or verifying a specific deadline configuration, setting a packet's priority for dynamic scheduling, and trading the reliability of real-time data delivery for capacity efficiency etc. We also study two special cases of WSNs, the chain model and the continuous model. Our slack distribution scheme yields consistent or similar results for these two special cases as that of past works, but is more adaptive by supporting more generic cases.","PeriodicalId":163002,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th Annual International Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services, MobiQuitous","volume":"2007 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128915954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To perform such interactions in a seamless manner, the actors need to be aware of not only their physical context (e.g. location) but also their changing relationships with respect to the particular task or goal. The latter interaction-oriented context, which we refer to as social context, has significant impacts on the way actors manage their adaptive behavior. However, very little research has focused on supporting such social context in ubiquitous environments. This paper presents our novel approach to modeling and realizing social context. Social context is modeled as a managed composition of loosely-coupled roles with their interaction relationships expressed as contracts. In addition, it is modeled from an individual actor's perspective to allow for possible differences in the actors' perception of the relationships. The social contexts of an actor are externalized from the actor itself to achieve easy management of the actors' adaptive behavior concerning interaction. A layered system architecture is introduced to realize the approach and demonstrate the development of automotive telematics systems that are physically and socially context-aware.","PeriodicalId":163002,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th Annual International Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services, MobiQuitous","volume":"16 1-2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120915381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Resolving and mediating ambiguous contexts for pervasive care environments","authors":"Nirmalya Roy, C. Julien, Sajal K. Such context information is useful in providing health related and wellness management services in an intelligent way so as to promote independent living. However, in reality, both sensed and interpreted contexts may often be ambiguous, leading to fatal decisions if not properly handled. Thus, a significant challenge facing the development of realistic and deployable context-aware services for healthcare applications is the ability to deal with ambiguous contexts to prevent hazardous situations. In this work, we propose a quality assured context mediation framework, based on efficient context-aware data fusion and information theoretic system parameter selection for optimal state estimation in resource constrained sensor network. The proposed framework provides a systematic approach based on dynamic Bayesian network to derive context fragments and deal with context ambiguity or error in a probabilistic manner. It has the ability to incorporate context representation according to the applications' quality requirement. Experimental results using SunSPOT sensors demonstrate the promise of this approach.","PeriodicalId":163002,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th Annual International Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services, MobiQuitous","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131338810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The healthcare realm is not left out; scores of health and wellness-related apps are available, though most (but not all) are simplistic, highly derivative or not overly compelling from graphical, creative, or usability points of view. In this paper we take a broader look at mobile platforms, enablers, and example healthcare applications that are noteworthy or representative in one way or another - these include some of the authors own research. We look at a series of exemplary and topical real-world examples to help us identify and support several overarching themes salient to mobile healthcare services. These themes include: the use of novel interaction techniques, the use of human-computer interface to encourage and mitigate movement and activity, and the use of graphics to improve the representation and understanding of medical, wellness, and life information. This paper, then, serves as a brief survey of existing health-related applications as well as an introduction to a few thought-provoking applications that “are not here yet” but promise to have an impact on mobile healthcare.","PeriodicalId":163002,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th Annual International Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services, MobiQuitous","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123499682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Part of the mediated interaction is being automated by the technology used, especially in mobile phone technology. Human factors research has shown that automation is a mixed blessing. It changes the role of the human in the loop with effects on understanding, control, skill, vigilance, and ultimately trust and usefulness. The question we want to raise is: What are the implications of increasing automation in mobile social applications? Jaiku, a mobile awareness service, automates disclosure and diffusion of location metadata, and ZoneTag, a photo-uploading program, automates and suggests metadata associated with images. We discuss alternative models of automation in these systems and present a study of three user groups in Finland and California using Jaiku and ZoneTag. The results reveal issues related to control, understanding, emergent practices, and privacy. We discuss the potentials and limitations of automated solutions in this context and discuss about the need for further research on automation in mobile social applications.","PeriodicalId":163002,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th Annual International Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services, MobiQuitous","volume":"197 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115710352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each user can modify any part of the document; the documents cannot be easily decomposed into sections that can be independently modified. Updates from different users will conflict and the goal is to resolve these conflicts and eventually produce a consistent document. Consider a group of users: Alice, Bob and Tom who are modifying a single document (illustrated in Figure 1). Each user creates updates on a shared document: Alice creates updates a1, a2, and a3, Bob creates b1 and b2 and Tom creates updates t1, t2 and t3. Traditionally, groupware systems ordered these updates using their causality relationships [1] in order to achieve consistency. The updates are then applied in this particular order. However, the system performance and the duration for all the updates to be applied to produce a consistent version depends on the availability patterns of the group members.","PeriodicalId":163002,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th Annual International Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services, MobiQuitous","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125154240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Meeting the strict security needs of these ubiquitous medical applications is a big challenge, since safety and privacy of medical data has to be guaranteed all the way from the sensor nodes to the back-end services, the system has to fulfill latency needs, and lots of mobility is expected. In this paper, we introduce a deployment model for wireless sensor networks for pervasive healthcare based on the concepts of patient area networks and medical sensor networks, and propose a complete and efficient security framework for them. Our security framework is organized into three layers, addressing the operational requirements and security needs at the patient area network, medical sensor network and back-end levels. We specify how these layers are interconnected with each other as well as the needed security mechanisms that allow for the efficient and practical deployment of secure pervasive healthcare systems based on wireless sensor networks.","PeriodicalId":163002,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th Annual International Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services, MobiQuitous","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126927226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of automatic identification capabilities can improve the user participation in business processes. However, the solutions available today for connecting physical elements with digital services are not suited for the support of smart workflows due to their limited customization capabilities. This makes it difficult to offer users the services that are relevant according to their role in the business process. This work introduces Presto, an extensible platform for supporting the user perspective in smart workflows. Presto is based on a pluggable architecture that can be extended to provide support for new tasks and technologies. In order to facilitate the development of these plug-ins, tools that automate the development process are also provided. Several Presto-based systems have been developed in order to validate the proposal.","PeriodicalId":163002,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th Annual International Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services, MobiQuitous","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133256010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They allow our identity information to be easily exposed and accessed via wireless networks. When identity information is associated with our personal and context information that is gathered by ubiquitous computing devices, personal privacy might be unprecedentedly sacrificed. People, however, have different privacy protection skills, awareness, and privacy preferences. Individuals can be uniquely identified on the basis of only a few identity elements used in combination. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to understand the following issues and their relations: a) what identity elements people think are important; b) what actions people claim to take to protect their identities and privacy; c) privacy concerns; d) how people expose their identities in ubiquitous computing environments; and e) how our rational identity exposure model can help to minimize identity exposure. We build a simulated ubiquitous computing shopping system, called InfoSource. It consists of two applications and our rational identity exposure model. We present our experiments and statistical analysis results. Our data show that exposure decisions depend on participants' attitudes about maintaining privacy, but they do not depend on participants' concerns and claimed actions related to identity exposure. Our RationalExposure model helped participants to minimize unnecessary exposures.","PeriodicalId":163002,"journal":{"name":"2009 6th Annual International Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services, MobiQuitous","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121038259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
