Taking into consideration the particular case of the banana plantain, one would like to understand why the urban consumer prices do not cease increasing. Is it due to lack of arbitration or a bad information circulation between the consumption and the production markets? This study answered these questions via econometric time series models (VAR, ADL, ECM, AECM). Monthly prices of plantain in kilogrammes collected by the MINAGRI, the CARBAP and the DSCN on ten markets over the period 1993 to 2000 were used. Results showed a weak integration of the production to the consumption markets. In other words, the urban consumer prices increase because, in part, there is a bad information circulation in the various markets. The concentration of information in the hands of certain tradesmen, in particular the wholesalers, caused an asymmetry of the price information between the consumption and production markets. This asymmetry of price information prevented other wholesalers from penetrating the plantain marketing chain. This resulted in a weak supply of cities and consequently a high price of plantain to the consumers. To maintain urban food security in plantain, attempts must be made to cancel the information asymmetry in the prices between consumption and production areas.","PeriodicalId":162902,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Economic Policy","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114867746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since then, the Reserve Bank of Malawi has periodically intervened in the foreign exchange market. This paper analyses the effectiveness of foreign exchange market interventions carried out by the Reserve Bank of Malawi. We use a GARCH (1, 1) model to simultaneously estimate the effect of intervention on the mean and volatility of the Malawi kwacha. Using monthly exchange rates and official intervention data from January 2002 to February 2006, the empirical results suggest that intervention activities of the Reserve Bank of Malawi affect the kwacha. In line with similar findings elsewhere in the literature, the paper finds that net sales of dollars by the Reserve Bank of Malawi depreciate, rather than appreciate, the kwacha. This effect is very small, however. Moreover, the paper also finds that the Reserve Bank of Malawi intervention reduces the volatility of the kwacha. This shows that the Reserve Bank actually achieves its objective of smoothing out fluctuations of the kwacha. This can be evidenced by the stability of the kwacha during a greater part of 2004. Thus intervention is, to some extent, used as an effective tool for moderating fluctuations of the kwacha. However, its effectiveness is constrained by the amounts of foreign exchange reserves, which are usually low.","PeriodicalId":162902,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Economic Policy","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125195555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It uses the 1996 Cameroon Household Consumption Survey generated by the national Statistics Office. Inequality is most pronounced in the urban areas, among the highly educated, women heads of household, young household heads, formal sector employees, and skilled workers. Total inequality is overwhelmingly accounted for by the within-group components and the between-group contributions are marginal in some cases, and negligible in others. Policies to reduce inequality in Cameroon must, therefore, focus more on within-group components. An apparent trade-off between poverty and inequality was observed. Policy indications emerging from the paper suggest that consistent actions to address the twin problem of poverty and inequality can best be designed within the ambit of carefully targeted transfers that are group neutral, yet reaching the vulnerable segments of each group. The major pre-occupation of this study is to determine the presence and level of integration in Nigeria's foodstuff market system. A typical bivariate regression model to test for market integration between two markets under the traditional static method is applied. The findings from the study corroborate previous findings of low integration of foodstuff market system in Nigeria.
