This symposium consists of general lectures with rigorous peer review as approximately 3 times of selection ratio and a hundred and several tens of interactive presentations, and since all of those are well received, the symposium has been developed as gather-ing over 600 participants in recent years. At Interaction 2012, it gathered approximately 700 participants with the theme of “In-teraction that leads to future” while executed the reformation to change the number of paper pages for interactive presentation from 2-4 pages to 6 pages as a fundamental rule, and then pre-sented 18 general lectures and 154 interactive presentations (in-cluding demonstration of general lecturers). Since studies in re-lation to interaction make rapid progress, it is extremely impor-tant to provide an opportunity for timely discussion culture. For that reason, a special edition for interaction was set in accordance with Interaction 2012 and provided an opportunity to immedi-ately make available in public as extensively collecting presentation papers and related studies for Interaction 2012. 25 outstanding papers among 43 papers submitted for the event were selected and recorded while the author who served as a program committee chairperson of Interaction 2012 became a guest editor and main program committee members for Interaction 2012 as well as those who are deeply related to interaction study became editing committee members. However, the presentations of 10 papers assessed as outstanding by the Interaction 2012 program committee were selected as recommended papers. The break-down was 8 papers from general lecture presentations (top 18.6% for the number of submitted papers) and 2 interactive presentations (top 1.3% for the number of submitted papers). Therefore, it is not always easy to take self-portraits using conventional user interfaces. This paper presents a vision-based head gesture interface for controlling a self-portrait camera that helps users to take self-portraits effectively and efficiently. Intu- itive nodding and head-shaking gestures control the camera zoom in/out on the face, and a mouth-opening gesture triggers the camera to take a picture. We evaluated its usability factors (effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction) and compared it to a remote control in a user study. The results suggest that our interface is useful for taking self-portrait pictures.","PeriodicalId":16243,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Information Processing","volume":"8 1","pages":"1140-1153"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"63627066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kihara","doi":"10.2197/IPSJJIP.21.186","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2197/IPSJJIP.21.186","url":null,"abstract":"“Network services” such as provided on the Internet have been integrated into many aspects of our lives and became indispensable infrastructure. However, the network services are always changing and evolving. Much kind of devices are getting connected to the network services, e.g., not only workstations and PCs, but also mobile phones, smartphones, home electronics, sensors, and so on. Moreover, network services now come to provide a space for communications like social network in addition to the traditional one-to-one or one-to-many communications such as e-mail or Web. Besides, new paradigms for the construction method of network services other than simple client-server are suggested like overlay-network, cloud computing, and so on. To keep the evolutions on the network services, cross-disciplinary study and forward-thinking study are required, in addition to the advancement of traditional network infrastructure, services, and applications. More specifically, the following innovative components including several new insights should be considered: e.g. smart network services based on the sensors and actuators, useroriented and context-aware content distribution services, collaboration environments based on large scale knowledge sharing, social deployment issues treating privacy and security, communication services under severe environment for wireless network such as rural areas, sparse device distribution areas, etc. The future of the network services can be actually achieved by harmonious integration between these new components and the existing network technologies, from physical layer of the network to application layer, treating much kind of technological and social issues. The aim of this special issue is to investigate trends and promote the research area such as network platform technologies, service construction technologies, application technologies, new generation multimedia/distributed computing, and so on. Mainly the committee members from Special Interest Group on Distributed Processing System (IPSJ SIG-DPS) formed the editorial committee of this special issue as below. The Editorial Committee received 38 submitted papers and accepted 26 papers among many high-quality submissions (68% acceptance rate). These papers were chosen based on the peer reviews and discussions in the Editorial Committee’s meeting held in March, May, July and October 2012.
