We refer to this technique as TDM-MIMO channel sounding. The ISI-SAGE algorithm (Fleury, B.H. et al., 2003; Yin, X. et al., 2003), applied in combination with TDM-MIMO channel sounding, makes it possible to extend the Doppler frequency estimation range (DFER) (Yin, X. et al., 2003). The extension is significant when arrays with large element numbers are employed. We derive the signal model for TDM-MIMO channel sounding and report analytical investigations showing that this DFER extension requires selection of switching modes (SMs) tailored to the array characteristics. The SM of a switched array is the temporal order in which the array elements are switched. In fact, the traditionally used SMs of uniform linear and planar arrays, where the elements are switched according to their natural spatial ordering, prove to be inappropriate as they lead to an ambiguity in the joint estimation of DF and directions. We also introduce the concept of normalized sidelobe level (NSL) associated to the SM of a switched array. We show that minimizing the NSL is a sensible criterion for the identification of SM, leading to DF and direction estimates with nearly optimum performance in terms of root mean square estimation error. Finally experimental investigations illustrate the impact of the SM of a uniform planar array on the behaviour of the DF and direction of arrival estimates computed with the ISI-SAGE algorithm.","PeriodicalId":162046,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 2004. In this paper, we present an efficient method to generate interoperability testing for time dependent protocols. We use the formal model, communicating TIOAs (timed input automata) (CTIOAs), to specify the system under test, in which time constraints are specified by linear expressions involving local clock values. In the method, firstly a global state reachability tree of CTIOAs should be generated, in which test sequences can be selected. Then we analyze the executability of the generated test sequences. By converting linear constraints of local clocks to a global clock, the problem reduces to a linear programming problem. We also select a set of appropriate initial clock values to make test sequences executable. An example of a neighbor discovery protocol is used to illustrate our method.","PeriodicalId":162046,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 2004. To limit complexity, the links use analog multi-tone rather than the more modern DMT. The tradeoffs involved in the design of such a system are examined and the performance of a serial link based on this approach is compared to a baseband architecture in terms of data rate and complexity using a convex optimization framework. Slightly less than 2/spl times/ improvement in data rate at reasonable complexity is shown to be achievable with the proposed architecture.","PeriodicalId":162046,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 2004. In this paper, a novel packet classification scheme for high performance routers on different QoS architectures, named split-engine packet classification (SPC), is proposed. The key feature of the presented architecture is its ability to address a wide variety of inherently incompatible performance requirements by efficiently combining existing classification methods. To prove the validity of the proposed approach, a low cost SPC packet classifier architecture with per-flow packet treatment and dynamic resource reservation support on an OC-24 link as required by the Integrated Services framework, has been developed.","PeriodicalId":162046,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 2004. A great number of applications rely on a reliable and efficient MAC layer broadcast. The IEEE 802.11 broadcast protocol, which is based on carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA), does not offer any MAC layer recovery on broadcast frames. Consequently, the increasing probability of lost frames may deteriorate the quality of broadcast/multicast services offered at upper layers. In this paper, we first formulate the broadcast problem as an optimization problem and show that it is NP-hard, even if the upper layer service is periodical beacons. An approximation algorithm with a guaranteed approximation ratio is also suggested. Then, a reliable and efficient MAC layer broadcast protocol, named broadcast protocol with busy tone (BPBT), is proposed. BPBT applies a busy tone to solve the hidden terminal problem. Finally, BPBT is compared with previous protocols for performance evaluation by simulation.","PeriodicalId":162046,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 2004. We propose a class-based adaptive ARQ scheme with QoS support for multimedia traffic, to facilitate higher throughputs through the reduction of MAC overhead. This scheme operates on top of the EDCA (enhanced distributed channel access) mechanism proposed in the IEEE 802.11e draft standard, which provides QoS support in the MAC layer through the use of service differentiation and traffic class prioritization. An OPNET simulation model is used to show that the proposed ARQ enhancement increases system performance.","PeriodicalId":162046,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 2004. The transmitted signals are disturbed by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). Iterative detection with extrinsic information is used at the receiver side. Compared to bit interleaved SCCPM systems, this scheme shows a substantial improvement in convergence threshold at the price of a higher error floor. In addition to showing this property, we also investigate the underlying reason by error event analysis. In order to estimate bit error rate performance, we generalize traditional union bounds for a bit interleaver to the non-binary interleaver. For the latter, both the order and the position of permuted non-zero symbols have to he considered. From the analysis, some principal properties are presented. Finally some design principles are proposed. The paper concentrates on SCCPM, but the proposed analysis methods and conclusions can he widely used in many other systems such as serially concatenated trellis coded modulation, et cetera.","PeriodicalId":162046,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 2004. In (I. Toufik et al, IEEE VTC2004) a max-min allocation algorithm is proposed for an N-user system with N parallel sub-channels. Here, we extend this algorithm to the multiple-antenna systems and compare its performance in two different transmission scenarios (spatial multiplexing and space time coding). The techniques are applicable, for instance, in MIMO systems using OFDMA systems with dynamic sub-carrier allocation. We show that multiuser diversity, and thus an increase of aggregate data rates with the size of the user population, can still be successfully achieved even under a hard fairness constraint. Moreover, multiple-antennas permit spatial multiplexing. The techniques considered here do not require phase information in the channel allocation process, which, from a practical point-of-view is particularly important for time-division duplex systems exploiting channel reciprocity.","PeriodicalId":162046,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 2004. Under such an architecture, the two paths from the source of the multicast session to the two edge routers provide certain protection for the data traffic from the source to the destination host. Two problems are associated with the proposed dual-homing multicast protection scheme. One is to calculate the individual survivability for a destination host that is connected to two edge routers. The other is to assign two edge routers for each destination host such that the total survivability is maximized for the multicast session subject to the port number constraint of edge routers. We propose an optimal algorithm to solve the first problem and a heuristic algorithm to solve the second problem. Through simulations, we show that the proposed heuristic algorithm achieves a performance close to the calculated lower bound.","PeriodicalId":162046,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, 2004.
