Telecommunications is one area where emphasis must be laid because of its impact on development. Since the power supply forms an essential part of any communication system it is important to chose the power supply option that has the lowest life-cycle cost. The life-cycle costs of several power supply alternatives to some telecommunication systems in Nigeria have been evaluated. A hybrid (Solar/Gen. Set) power supply option is shown to be cost-effective when compared with diesel generating systems powering telecommunication equipment and airconditioning loads. The cost of PV power supply option used for a celluphone system is about 10% of the cost of the alternative of daily battery replacement and haulage. The low teledensity in the country creates a need for bold initiatives to incorporate solar power in telecommunications network, particularly in the remote rural communities where conventional electricity is not only unavailable, but is unreliable and very costly to maintain.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132060004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To evaluate the performance of this new device, horizontal global and diffuse irradiance data were simultaneously collected from Delta-T device and Napier University's CIE First Class daylight monitoring station. To enable a cross check a Kipp & Zonen CM11 global irradiance sensor has also been installed in Currie, south-west Edinburgh. Sunshine duration data have been recorded at the Royal Botanical Garden, Edinburgh using their Campbell-Stokes recorder. Hourly data sets were analysed and plotted within the Microsoft Excel environment. Using the common statistical measures, Root Mean Square Difference (RMSD) and Mean Bias Difference (MBD) the accuracy of measurements of Delta-T sensor's horizontal global and diffuse irradiance, and sunshine duration were investigated. The results show a good performance on the part of Delta-T device for the measurement of global and diffuse irradiance. The sunshine measurements were found to have a lack of consistency and accuracy. It is argued herein that the distance between the respective sensors and the poor accuracy of Campbell-Stokes recorder may be contributing factors to this phenomenon.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133851321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The power output of the cycle is maximized with respect to the working fluid temperatures and the expressions for maximum power output and the corresponding thermal efficiency are obtained. The effect of the effectiveness of the various heat exchangers and the efficiencies of the turbine and compressor, the reservoir temperature ratio and the heat capacitance rate of heating and cooling fluids and the cycle working fluid on the power output and the corresponding thermal efficiency has been studied. It is seen the effect of cold side effectiveness is more pronounced for the power output while the effect of regenerative effectiveness is more pronounced for the thermal efficiency. It is found that the effect of turbine efficiency is more than the compressor efficiency on the performance of these cycles. It is also found that the effect of sink-side heat capacitance rate is more pronounced than the heat capacitance rate on the source side and the heat capacitance rate of the working fluid.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"357 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133070126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This applies particularly in Southern Europe and in the Mediterranean, where sunspaces are habitable over long periods of the year. The danger of overheating during summer is, however, not to be underestimated, as the results of a long-term measurement of such a sunspace shows. The indoor climate conditions monitored seem to confirm that, without a sun-protection scheme, satisfactory comfort conditions are difficult to establish. Still, with appropriate ventilation the resulting cooling loads can be reduced to acceptable levels, which, when considering the heating period, can lead to an overall positive result.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128438385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to explore this phenomenon an attempt was made to investigate the possibility of using sunlight for water disinfection in the hope to apply this technique in areas where conventional water disinfection processes are not available. Autoclave sterilized raw river water containing a known concentration of E.coli cells was exposed to sunlight, for varying time intervals, in 50, 100, 500 and 1000ml glass bottles. Cells mounted on membrane filters were also exposed to sunlight in the same manner in order to study the direct effect of sunlight on bacterial cells. Results showed that about 4 hours of continuous sunlight exposure were required to reduce survivors to about 0.01% (4 log cycles) in bottles. The volume of exposed samples did not have significant influence on the efficiency of inactivation. However, about one hour was needed to achieve the same level of survivors with cells mounted on filters. Generally, solar inactivation capacity increased with the progression of the day giving a peak efficiency at 12:00-16:00 in winter, 11:00-17:00 in spring and autumn, and 10:00-18:00 in summer.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122118318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increase in daily production of the still was 11% to 103% compared with an identical still without screens under the same conditions. The effects of screen color, position, number of screens, side wall color, and dye in the basin water were also investigated. An attempt to simulate the new configuration with a simple extension of previous mathematical models for a still without a screen was not successful. This indicates that the lumped formulation used in the analysis of a simple solar still can not be extended to the configuration at hand.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126612573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The procedure basically consists of the evaluation of the spectral-mismatch parameter as a function of light intensity before measuring. The simulator is set to the irradiance that produces a spectral-mismatch parameter equal to unity (or to some other desired value) and only then is the I-V curve taken. The main advantages are: no need to use very similar reference and test cells, direct extraction of the right whole I-V curve without cell models and ease to measure under different light intensities.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126266004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ratio of monthly daily ultraviolet to global solar radiation was found to lie between 4.07% and 5.4%. The highest and lowest intensity monthly-daily recorded values for global radiation were 9.29 and 0.45 Kwh/m2 but for ultraviolet 445 and 31 Wh/m2 respectively. Dependence of the global and ultraviolet solar radiation on the atmospheric humidity was investigated. Linear regression functions were obtained with coefficient of determination R2> 0.7. The decrease in ultraviolet solar radiation from 270 to 240 Wh/m2 justifiably as a result of increasing the chemical pollutants SO2 and NO2.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114289208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This combination forms the basis of the relatively new field of thermoeconomics (exergoeconomics). This approach allows the monetary evaluation of costs caused by irreversibilities (exergy losses) as well as comparisons between these costs and the investment and operating costs for each component of a power plant. A 35MW solar thermal power plant has been analyzed with the aid of the exergoeconomics. It is found that in the reheater, heat exchanger and pumps it will be profitable to reduce exergy losses even by increasing the capital costs. Whereas it will be profitable to reduce capital cost in feed water heaters (no. 1, 2 and 3) by compromising with exergy losses. Most crucial component is the solar collector field where exergy losses are severe and it requires efficient collector design. Unfortunately not much could be done at the moment for the collectors. Its fate will depend on the advancements in collector technology. The analysis permits identification and evaluation of inefficiencies in the plant and opportunities for improvement in the plant components.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129742036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The focus of the study is the most common form of intelligent facade which the research has termed automated glazed facades. These are defined by this research as highly glazed facades capable of independent physical reaction to either external or internal conditions or presets. The findings of a series of occupant satisfaction surveys and interviews in automated glazed facade buildings in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, France and the USA are discussed Occupant control is found to be the dominant issue affecting occupant satisfaction in buildings with intelligent facades. The importance of occupant control is shown to be rooted in the occupants ability to achieve their desired conditions. The main elements of occupant concern are identified and the potential of the automated provision of occupant requirements is discussed in light of the findings.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127410032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
