When physical events in the real world trigger spontaneous communication in many nodes the single communication channel is under heavy load and many messages are lost due to collisions. CSMA/CA schemes are well suited to spontaneous communication, but do not provide a high channel utilization under heavy load. TDMA protocols have some conceptual advantage here, but in the case of mobile sensor nodes they need to be adaptive and establish TDMA schedules on demand. MLMAC is a novel TDMA based MAC protocol that can react on changing radio neighborhoods in mobile networks. In this paper we introduce the MLMAC protocol and present the results of real experiments with a group of mobile sensor nodes based on RCX robots.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125846222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wide deployments of mission-critical WSNs create concerns about security issues. Security of large scale densely deployed and infrastructure-less wireless networks of resource limited sensor nodes requires efficient key distribution protocols. Perring et al. developed SNEP capable of providing several security services, such as data confidentiality, data authentication, and data freshness. In order to provide assurance that these protocols are verifiable secure and trustworthy it is necessary to perform a formal verification on their design specification. The formal logic of Coffey-Saidha-Newe (CSN) combines the logic of belief and knowledge to evaluate trust and security of communication protocols. In this paper the SNEP key agreement protocol is discussed. A formal verification of SNEP key agreement using the CSN modal logic is presented. Some additional axioms relating to MAC authentication are also presented and used to simplify the verification of protocols that involve MAC authentication.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127988065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes a remote system scheme for automatic forest surveillance based on infrared sensors. A complete system for forest fire detection is firstly presented although we focus on processing the images from infrared sensors. The proposed scheme based on infrared image processing performs early detection of any fire threat. With the aim of determining the presence or absence of fire, the proposed algorithms performs the fusion of different detectors which exploit different expected characteristics of a real fire, like persistence and increase. Theoretical results and practical simulations are presented to corroborate the control of the probability of false alarm (PFA). Probability of detection (PD) dependence on signal to noise ratio (SNR) is also evaluated.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134302178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present Sensoria, a fully fledged simulator for WSNs that has considerable differences to all other existing simulators. Sensoria is very powerful in simulating a range of small to large scale WSNs based on a simple and complete Graphical User Interface (GUI). Sensoria's GUI allows users to design various simulation scenarios and display the simulation results graphically with many formats. Sensoria is a component-based simulator and it can be easily reconfigured to adapt to different levels of simulation details and accuracy. We demonstrate the usage of Sensoria via studying many performance metrics of a set of simple and flat routing protocols that are customized by Sensoria. The paper concludes with evidence that, albeit being simple and ease-of-use, Sensoria proves to be efficient and effective tool for WSN research purposes.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131113235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two major aspects in the design of the presented batteries are discussed. First, two possible novel chemistries are presented herein that allow for the batteries to be activated using water. Electrochemical characterization, in the form of polarographic curves obtained from tests of the fabricated cells, is presented. Using aluminum as an anode, the cells have open voltage circuits of 1.6 and 1.8 volts, respectively, and are capable of providing power densities up to 3 and 15 mAmps/cm . The fabrication routes of batteries with thin-form factors are detailed. Second, a micro fabricated pressure sensitive membrane is described, realized and tested as an automated way to activate the cells, via the immersion depth. So far the fabricated silicon nitride membranes (2times2 mm2 times 2 mum) can withstand up to 30 meters of depth underwater. Additional benefits of the proposed novel cells such as simplicity in their fabrication and use, safety, and their potential for powering underwater environmental sensors are also outlined.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130973933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to related work, our metric considers energy savings due to aggregation a priori and achieves a superior performance. However, a problem that arises from the ability to aggregate and to change energy cost during the construction of a forwarding tree is that routing cycles may occur because information used may be out-dated. By employing different types of sequence numbers, our strategy is able to prevent such cycles, accounting for the distributed nature of sensor networks.","PeriodicalId":161788,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications (SENSORCOMM 2007)","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123294339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
