The elderly and differently abled should not be denied these rights. Creating assistive systems by befriending technology makes a big difference in their lives. This paper addresses the development of a self-transfer facility. The proposed system can be used for transferring a user, with disability in lower limbs, between a wheel chair and a western closet or another chair. A working prototype of a manual self-transfer facility has been developed for proving the concept of operation. The system makes use of the available physical strength of the user for achieving the transfer. The prototype proved the concept of operation of the transfer mechanism by successfully transferring the user, with ease, from a chair to another chair as well as to a western closet.","PeriodicalId":161131,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Robotics, Automation, Control and Embedded Systems (RACE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129777967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However tradeoffs have to be made with regards to bandwidth, fidelity, power consumption and system complexity. This paper explores using Non-conventional waveforms including Gaussian like pulses as carrier waveforms using a 4-user OFDMA system as the benchmark. SPICE simulations are done at the deep submicron VLSI level (120 nm) using MicroWind. The performance of the various carrier waveforms are assessed by using standard metrics such as Bit Error Rate, Signal to Noise ratio and eye-diagram. The results presented in this work give valuable insights into Non-conventional carrier waveforms and their impact on SNR and BER leading to more robust.","PeriodicalId":161131,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Robotics, Automation, Control and Embedded Systems (RACE)","volume":"2014 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132217329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Compact Airglow photometer (CAP) is one of the Fabry-Perot (FP) etalon based optical instruments which is capable of detecting the faint airglow emissions from sky in the presence of bright background light (which may be Sun or moon light). This is achieved by capturing the circular fringes of the required emissions, formed by the Fabry-Perot (FP) etalon as images along with the background using a Charge Coupled Device (CCD). The paper purports to the development of data acquisition unit for Compact photometer for terrestrial and planetary emissions using LabVIEW Software. The data acquisition unit interfaces CCD with any personal computer. The system is capable of subtracting the dark noise from each CCD frame (obtained at every 100 ms minimum) and integrating them for the desired time. It is also capable of selecting and counting the photons falling on two rectangular portions at any region in the CCD image plane separately. For each wavelength, two regions, one with fringe (Signal + Background) and other without fringe (Background alone) have been identified. Subtraction of the latter from the former will give the intensities of the airglow emissions at desired wavelengths (signal).","PeriodicalId":161131,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Robotics, Automation, Control and Embedded Systems (RACE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130689630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The conventional OFDM systems, so far deployed make use of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) as their basic building block. Besides the numerous advantages, the restriction over the data rate imposed by the FFT in the form of cyclic prefix may be intolerable for the next generation OFDM systems. So, researches are on the way to replace FFT with a more suitable transform which is redundant free. DWT OFDM is one such system in which FFT in the conventional OFDM is replaced with Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). Using simulations, already it has been established that in ideal conditions, the performance of DWT OFDM is better than that of FFT OFDM. As phase noise can be considered as the major RF impairment and one of the leading performance limiting factors of the wireless systems, this paper analyses the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the DWT OFDM in presence of phase noise. BER performances of both DWT OFDM and FFT OFDM are analysed and compared in presence of phase noise. For this, Matlab Simulink model have been developed for both types of OFDM, and simulation is carried over in presence of phase noise for different modulation schemes. In all cases the BER performances of DWT OFDM is found to be fairly ahead that of FFT OFDM.","PeriodicalId":161131,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Robotics, Automation, Control and Embedded Systems (RACE)","volume":"205 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115908298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Being an opportunistic communication scenario, cognitive radio performance analysis attains prime significance. Performance analysis of a cognitive radio scenario in a wireless channel is done by a well-known performance metric Bit Error Rate (BER). However, the wireless channel coefficients or channel state information (CSI) are always unknown in any practical cognitive scenario. Hence, it needs to be estimated by estimation approaches like least squares (LS), minimum mean square error (MMSE) and maximum likelihood (ML). Least squares approach of estimation of wireless channel coefficients satisfies linearity property and is simple in computation, however it produces a lesser Mean Square Error (MSE) in comparison to MMSE and ML based approaches. But MMSE and ML approaches are based on the probability density function (PDF) which generally leads to increased computational complexity to determine the estimate of the wireless channel. However, a moderate MSE performance is sufficient for performance analysis of a CR scenario due to spectrum sensing. Least squares based approach provides an estimate of the wireless channel with very less computational complexity. Hence, this paper uses LS to estimate the wireless channel coefficients. In addition bit error rate performance of a cognitive radio scenario is analyzed using the obtained LS estimate of the wireless channel. Simulation results are obtained to analyze the LS performance of CR scenario using mean square error and BER performance metric. The obtained simulation results can be used as a benchmark for analysis of cognitive radio environments.","PeriodicalId":161131,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Robotics, Automation, Control and Embedded Systems (RACE)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116978937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Emotion recognition can be correctly done by EEG signals. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is the direct reflection of the activities of hundreds and millions of neurons residing within the brain. Different emotion states create distinct EEG signals in different brain regions. Therefore EEG provides reliable technique to identify the underlying emotion information. This paper proposes a novel approach to recognize users emotions from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Audio signals are used as stimuli to elicit positive and negative emotions of subjects. For eight healthy subjects, EEG signals are acquired using seven channels of an EEG amplifier. The result reveal that frontal, temporal and parietal regions of the brain are relevant to positive emotion recognition and frontal and parietal regions are activated in case of negative emotion identification. After proper signal processing of the raw EEG, for the whole frequency bands the features are extracted from each channel of the EEG signals by Multifractral Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (MFDFA) method. We introduce an effective classifier named Support Vector Machine (SVM) to categorize the EEG feature space related to various emotional states into their respective classes. Next, we compare Support Vector Machine (SVM) with various other methods like Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA) and K Nearest Neighbor (KNN). The average classification accuracy of SVM for positive emotions on the whole frequency bands is 84.50%, while the accuracy of QDA is 76.50% and with LDA 75.25% and KNN is only 69.625% whereas, for negative emotions it is 82.50%, while for QDA is 72.375% and with LDA 65.125% and KNN is only 70.50%.","PeriodicalId":161131,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Robotics, Automation, Control and Embedded Systems (RACE)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114585934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, transformation of current steer circuit into charge steer is an efficient technique to reduce power dissipation even at higher speed. In this paper, an efficient model is proposed to estimate the 1st and 2nd stage operational Amplifier's power dissipation and delay, which can further used to design higher order Operational Amplifier, Voltage controlled Oscillator, Analog to Digital converters and other efficient power CMOS circuits. Analysis of 1st and 2nd stage Amplifier with BSIM4 model for CMOS in Tanner environment is done. This type of super-elastic behavior found in shape memory alloys are generally used as actuators in robotics, control and embedded systems. In the present study, first an experimental setup was developed to perform life tests of Nickel-Titanium Shape Memory Alloy (NiTi-SMA) springs. Laser displacement sensor and J-type thermocouple was used to measure the displacement and temperature respectively. Data was collected through the Data Acquisition (DAQ) device. Acquired data is then used for failure diagnosis and reliability assessment of NiTi-SMA springs. Accelerated life testing models are developed to estimate the parameters of the life distributions. It was observed that with the subsequent cycles, SMA spring starts losing its inherent property of being an elastic object, and thus a decrease in displacement of it was observed with each cycle. Gradual loss of actuation property of the material under accelerated conditions was investigated in detail using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA).","PeriodicalId":161131,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Robotics, Automation, Control and Embedded Systems (RACE)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129258774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The three antennas being integrated in a proposed structure is operating at various resonant frequencies, 2.45GHz (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth), 5.5GHz (Cellular phones, WLAN, Wi-Max) and 7.5GHz (GPS, Marine Radar) respectively. They are rectangular in shape, in which RF power is fed directly to the centre radiating patch with the help of micro strip line feed technique (giving linear polarization). Various parameters such as Return Loss, Radiation Pattern, Bandwidth, Gain, VSWR, etc., are determined. The optimized performance of the proposed reconfigured antenna structure (integrated) and non reconfigured antenna structures (separately) were optimized based on Return Loss with respect to change in the thickness of the substrates used. Finally, the proposed antenna structure is fabricated and being tested. The ideal RF switches i.e., Micro strip lines were used instead of MEMS switches for antenna reconfigurability.
