The accurate prediction of PHEVs-induced loads needs a comprehensive study of PHEV characteristics. The authors divide the PHEV characteristics into two categories: driving pattern and vehicle parameters. Due to the stochastic nature of vehicle arrival time, departure time and daily mileage, probabilistic methods are used to model the driving pattern by many researchers. But the three elements of driving pattern are correlated which each other, making the probability density functions (PDFs) based probabilistic methods inaccurate. Based on the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) database, the authors proposed a fuzzy logic based stochastic model to study the relationship between the three elements of driving pattern. Moreover, the authors proposed a load profile modeling framework (LPMF) for PHEVs to synthesize both the characteristics of driving pattern and vehicle parameters into a load profile prediction system. Finally, the proposed LPMF of PHEVs is tested in a residential distribution grid, and the results are compared with deterministic and probabilistic models of PHEVs.","PeriodicalId":161074,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES T&D Conference and Exposition","volume":"267 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129892086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, security evaluation method involves running full load flow and rotor dynamics analysis for each contingency, results as an infeasible method for real time application. This paper presents an approach for security assessment and enhancement using Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN). The security of the system is assessed in terms of security indices based on the intensity of both steady state and transient disturbances. The necessary corrective control action to be taken in the event of disturbance is also proposed and the effect of this action has also been observed in order to enhance the security. Usage of RBFNN improves the response time compared to other neural networks. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated using IEEE 14 bus and IEEE 39 bus standard test systems.","PeriodicalId":161074,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES T&D Conference and Exposition","volume":"39 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120895640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the consideration of renewable distributed generation and variable loads, the distribution state estimation (DSE) is investigated. To solve the state estimation optimization problem, the cooperative particle swarm optimization (Co-PSO) algorithm is proposed based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm. The proposed method can estimate variable loads and renewable distributed generation (DG) values efficiently. Experiment is made on the IEEE 123-bus radial distribution case with variable loads and DG units. Test results and the comparisons with other evolutionary optimization algorithms such as original PSO, improved PSO algorithms, genetic algorithm (GA) demonstrate that the proposed Co-PSO is effective for the DSE problems.","PeriodicalId":161074,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES T&D Conference and Exposition","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124493072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The EV charging effects are evaluated for increase in EV load penetration and EV load clustering. The voltage analysis is carried out using a 13.8-kV distribution feeder dominated by residential loads. The study reveals that EV charging affects the secondary voltages more significantly than the primary voltages. The percentage voltage drop recorded at the primary wire increases with the increase in EV load penetration. As expected due to the additional voltage drops in the secondary wires, the secondary circuit records even higher voltage drops. EV load clustering leads to an imbalance in the primary wire voltages. This causes significant voltage drops in a few secondary services while other record an increase in the voltage.","PeriodicalId":161074,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES T&D Conference and Exposition","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124092678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Model-based simulation is not applicable for dynamics prediction due to constant change of network configuration. With more and more Phasor Measurement Units (PMU), power system dynamics can be studied with pure measurement data. This paper proposes a dynamics prediction method based on measurement data. A mulit-input multi-output Multivariate AutoRegressive model (MAR) is developed and dynamics prediction procedure is proposed. Both simulation data and field measurement data are tested. Examples show that the proposed method can predict power system dynamics with high accuracy for simulation data and give reasonable result for measurement data. This paper presents the development of a new NOCT applicable for tropical regions and it is called as the tropical field operation cell temperature (tFOCT). A new equation for calculating cell temperature is developed by determining a new value for the tFOCT and its measuring conditions, which are solar radiation, ambient temperature, and wind speed. These conclusions are based on the condition of the tropical weather environment as a unique approach for field value adaptation. Site monitoring and analysis of the installed system were performed for 10 consecutive months at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The results show that the suitable weather conditions for measuring tFOCT are irradiance of 954 W/m2, ambient temperature of 330 °C, and wind speed of 1.5 m/s. The proposed correlation model between ambient temperature and solar radiation and the cell temperature is useful for PV manufacturers who intend to install their PV products in tropical countries.","PeriodicalId":161074,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES T&D Conference and Exposition","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125473057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The PV system is interfaced with the BESS at the DC link to provide reserve power. These two different integrated solutions can be compared with regards to the number of power stages, efficiency, storage system flexibility, and control complexity. A single power conversion system named Reconfigurable Solar Converter (RSC) presents more flexibility, less complexity, and multi-mode capability depending on system requirement, and results in a more efficient and economical system compared with a current indirect PV/battery system with two stages of power conversion units. There are various approaches to share the load when microgrids are islanded or disconnected from the main grid. In the islanded mode, a distributed generator (DG) like a diesel generator can enhance the reliability of the power supply and regulate the frequency and voltage within the microgrid. Different operation modes for both topologies such as PV to grid, PV plus battery to the grid, battery to the grid (DC to AC) and PV to battery (DC to DC) are simulated on a microgrid testbed, verifying the applicability of the two architectures in microgrids.","PeriodicalId":161074,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES T&D Conference and Exposition","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125608731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although commonly used in electronic circuit applications, SCR has seldom been used in power system applications. In recent years, power engineers have raised interest in exploring applications of SCR in power systems. The SCR is low-cost and durable. Its nature of using the magnetic field as control medium makes it more familiar and, perhaps, more easily accepted by power utilities. In this paper, the basic concept of SCR and some existing or potential applications of SCR in power systems are introduced. A project on the R&D of a SCR-based power flow controller has been funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and conducted by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and Waukesha Electric Systems, Inc. since early 2012. Some technical details of the project are presented and some preliminary results are highlighted.","PeriodicalId":161074,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES T&D Conference and Exposition","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132195257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When voltage sag occurs due to grid side fault, the series compensator of the UPQC injects required voltage to prevent disconnecting of FSIG wind turbine. On the other hand, faults produced by wind turbine generator systems will impact not only the wind farms but also the interconnected system including the grid if proper protection is not ensured. Therefore, the resistive SFCL incorporated in series with the dc-link inductance of UPQC is proposed to limit excessive current in the event of the generator side fault. Detailed simulation studies implemented in PSCAD/EMTDC confirm that both of resistive SFCL and large dc-link inductance are effective in decreasing the fault current thereby reducing the voltage dip at the generator terminal.","PeriodicalId":161074,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE PES T&D Conference and Exposition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130230234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
