{"title":"Body mass index, serum rheumatoid factor and c-reactive protein among individuals with rheumatoid arthritis in Kano Metropolis","authors":"I. Yahaya","doi":"10.51374/annalsmls.2021.1.2.0043","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.51374/annalsmls.2021.1.2.0043","url":null,"abstract":"Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is becoming a global health menace associated with joints swelling, pain, stiffness, and progressive loss of function of extremities etc. This study aimed at evaluating the Body Mass Index (BMI), Serum Rheumatoid Factor (RF) and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) among RA Patients in Kano Metropolis. Methods: A total of 111 participants comprising 74 Rheumatoid Arthritis patients and 37 apparently healthy controls were recruited for this study. Exactly 29 were males while 44 were females aged between 25 to 75 years. Using standard techniques, BMI was calculated using the weight and height taken from the participants. Blood samples were collected for serum RF and CRP and were analysed using Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay technique. Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 21 was used for the analysis of data. Results: Our findings reveal that, females recorded higher percentage frequency of 45 (60.8%) while males recorded a lower percentage frequency of 29(39.2%) of RA patients with the ratio of 1.55:1, the higher percentage frequencies of 35(47.3%) was observed in overweight BMI patients of between 25- 29.9 kg m-2. The mean serum value of RF was significantly (p = 0.00) higher in case group (4.4 ±1.5 ng/ml) compared with the control group (2.0 ±1.5 ng/ml) and also the mean serum value of CRP was significantly (p = 0.00) higher in case group (13.0 ±5.0 mg/L) compared with the control group (5.5±5.0 mg/L). A significant positive correlation was established between serum RF and CRP (r = 0.48, p=0.00). Conclusion: Our findings show increased RF and CRP in RA case group. {"title":"Association between parasite density and cytokines in malaria infected human placentas","authors":"O. We investigated if any relationship exists between the parasite density and cytokines in malaria parasite infected human placentas. Methods: Sixty (60) malaria parasite infected placentas from apparently healthy immediate post-partum women and 40 malaria parasite uninfected placentas which served as control were studied. Blood from the human placenta was aseptically collected and tested for HIV and malaria parasite using standard methods. Interferon-Gamma (IFNγ), Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNFα), Interleukin-4 (IL-4), Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Interleukin-10 (IL-10) were measured by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) technique. Data were analysed using appropriate statistical tools. Results: The result revealed P. falciparum with a mean parasite density of 762.47±459.62 parasite/µl of blood. The mean±SD (11.71±6.55pg/ml) and 55.57±43.13 pg/ml for IFNγ and IL-10 respectively for infected placenta was statistically higher on comparison with 5.58±2.86 pg/ml and 16.60±4.88 pg/ml for IFNγ and IL10 respectively for uninfected human placenta (P<0.05). Positive correlation existed between parasite density and IL-6 (r = 0.59, p = 0.001) and between parasite density and IL-10 (r =0.41, p=0.024). {"title":"Neutrophil to Lymphocyte ratio versus Monocyte to Lymphocyte ratio in predicting hypertensive diseases of pregnancy","authors":"Moses Banyeh","doi":"10.51374/ANNALSMLS.2021.1.1.0014","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.51374/ANNALSMLS.2021.1.1.0014","url":null,"abstract":"Background: The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR) are two systemic inflammatory indices with promising prognostic and predictive abilities for HDP. The study aimed to determine the abilities of the NLR and MLR in predicting HDP among pregnant women in Ghana. Methods: This was a case-control study that was carried out between September 2015 and May 2016 at the Bolgatanga regional hospital. The study involved 50 pregnant women of whom 60% (30/50) had normotensive pregnancies (controls) and 40% (20/50) were confirmed to have HDP (cases). The cases were compared with the controls in terms of their socio-demographic characteristics, full blood count parameters, NLR and MLR. Probability value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The chances of developing HDP is more likely when lymphocyte count is increased [OR:1.126(95%CI:1.028-1.233)] but less likely with increased NLR [OR: 0.776(95%CI:0.651-0.926)] and MLR [OR: 0.039(95%CI: 0.003-0.469)]. There was no significant difference in the area under the curve (AUC) between NLR and MLR (0.77 vs 0.76, p>0.05). The sensitivities of NLR and MLR were 95.0% and 70.0%, while their specificities were 56.7% and 73.3%, respectively. The positive likelihood ratio (+LR) of MLR was higher than that of NLR (2.6 vs. 2.2). Conclusion: Both the NLR and MLR have moderate predictive ability for hypertensive diseases of pregnancy (HDP). However, the MLR will be a better predictor for HDP than the NLR. {"title":"Detection of IgM and IgG Dengue antibodies in febrile patients suspected of malaria attending health center in Jos, Nigeria","authors":"Nantip F. The objective was to detect the presence of Dengue IgG/IgM antibodies and Plasmodium species in the blood of febrile patients. Methods: This is a cross sectional study conducted among ninety-four (94) consenting febrile patients suspected of malaria in Jos. Duo detection of dengue antibodies (IgG/IgM) were determined by ELISA technique. Total DNA was extracted from patient serum and quantified to determine concentration and quality of the extraction process. Malaria was detected by Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction. Results: Dengue antibodies were detected in 55.3% (52/94) of the febrile patients. The mean age was 29.9±1.2. Highest dengue prevalence of 75% (39/52), 50% (26/52) and 59.6% (31/52) were recorded among females, students and non-users of mosquito nets, respectively. In all. 11.7% (11/94) of the samples tested positive for malaria. Age group 11-20 years recorded the highest prevalence of malaria, 63.6% (7/11). Dengue and Malaria co-infection was documented in 5.3% (5/94). There was a significant difference in the prevalence of dengue and malaria among febrile subjects. Conclusion: No association of dengue infection with gender and use of Insecticide Treated Nets was found. The lower malaria prevalence compared to dengue suggests that febrile illness in this population is shown to be associated more with dengue infection.
