About 70% of its population is directly or directly related and dependent on agriculture so the availability of land for cultivation is important for those people who are engaged in agriculture. Cropping pattern is also an important aspect to know the agricultural scenario of any area. The pattern of cropping is very much affected by population growth and other physical and economic factors. In this paper, an attempt has been made to analyze the changing cropping pattern in Bundelkhand Region in the last two decades from 1994-95 to 2014-15.The major crops that occupy the agricultural land of the region are Cereals(40.52%),Pulses(41.06%),Oilseeds(15.46%),Cash crops(1.31%),Fodder(0.35%)and Other crops(1.29%). In this time of 20 years (1994-95 to 2014-15), a trend of positive change is found in all groups except fodder and other crops.","PeriodicalId":160152,"journal":{"name":"National Geographical Journal of India","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115368753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, successful implementation of transit-oriented development is associated with a host of issues that are both social and economic in nature. This paper aims to throw light on the notion of rail-based transit-oriented development with a specic focus on the prospect of Varanasi city and its recently redeveloped Banaras railway station. This research is grounded on the existing literature and the information available in the public domain. The study refers to some international examples to show the implications of transit-oriented development initiatives on the fabrication of a more liveable and sustainable type of cityscape. Additionally, it takes insights from contemporary Indian initiatives that depict a well-realisation of the potential of railway stations as transit-oriented development sites, which ultimately aims to achieve the broader goal of sustainable urban and transport development throughout the entire length and width of the country.","PeriodicalId":160152,"journal":{"name":"National Geographical Journal of India","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116149025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a continuous process to meet the social and economic necessities of the people. Eastern Uttar Pradesh, an economically backward region due to lack of infrastructure and high concentration of population, shows the high disparity in socio-economic development. This work is an attempt to estimate the levels of socio-economic development of this region. Indicators used to measure the level of socio-economic development of the study area are per capita energy consumption, percentage of workers to total population, per capita income, literacy rate, number of health care centers per lakh population and number of schools per lakh population. Results show that Varanasi, Ambedkar Nagar, Sultanpur, Ghajipur, Jaunpur, Sant Kabir, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Pratapgarh, Deoria, Mau and Faizabad are highly developed while Districts of Vindhyan and Terai area are poorly developed due to poor infrastructure and awareness.","PeriodicalId":160152,"journal":{"name":"National Geographical Journal of India","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132412899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The process of rapid urbanization is creating serious challenges related to proper water supply with quality and quantity. The research aims to assess the quality of drinking water supplied to primary schools of different wards in Ballia city. Water samples to test the quality of drinking water have been collected from India Mark II hand pumps from different wards. These water samples have been tested in the laboratory and data are tabulated, analyzed in excel software. Distribution maps are prepared with the help of Arc GIS. This study reveals that the pH level of the entire city is good but TDS is above the permissible limit at some primary schools i.e. Neuri (599 mg/l) and Vijayipur (542 mg/l). The concentration of hardness, alkalinity and calcium are above the permissible level of BIS standard while the concentration of magnesium and Sulphate is below the permissible limit of BIS in all primary schools.","PeriodicalId":160152,"journal":{"name":"National Geographical Journal of India","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125129643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Rangit River Basin is a part of Sikkim-Darjeeling Himalaya that contains very significant geological and tectonic characteristics. The basin has mainly three rock groups that are Central Crystalline Complex, the Daling group and the Gondwana group. The spectacular feature of this basin is Rangit Window, where the underlying Gondwana rock group is exposed from overlaying Daling group. Rangit basin exhibits both folded and fault structures which are indeed unique. A detailed study of litho-tectonic setup as well as to identify geomorphic features of this basin geological maps from of Geological Survey of India and topographical maps from Survey of India along with tectonic maps and secondary data have been used. This study is an attempt to show the relation between litho-tectonic setup and drainage development. The river basin is the product of morphotectonics and morphoclimatic mechanisms. Evidence of the faulting, folding, thrusting, fractures and cracks as a witnessed on-field point to the influence of neo-tectonism episodes have been noticed in the study area. Some micro landform features have also been identified after extensive fieldwork in the study area. The present study is an attempt to understand the significant role of rock structure in drainage development in the study area.","PeriodicalId":160152,"journal":{"name":"National Geographical Journal of India","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131031829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study of cropping patterns, diversification and production is important in agricultural development. Cropping pattern is the proportion of area under various crops while crop diversification refers to the raising of various crops. Agricultural productivity is an input-output ratio that facilitates efficient comparison. These concepts are influenced by various geo-climatic, socio-economic and institutional factors. Tarai region is a marshy moist area lying between Himalayan foothills and Gangetic plains. In Uttar Pradesh, the region extends over 7 districts from Pilibhit to Maharajganj. This region is predominantly agrarian. The present paper aims to study the cropping pattern, Spatio-temporal pattern of crop diversification and production of crops at the district level in the Tarai region of Uttar Pradesh for the period of 2007-08 to 2017-18. The study is based on agricultural data collected from Statistical Abstract of Uttar Pradesh. 13 crops under 4 categories are selected in total. The study uses the location quotient technique for calculating crop concentration, the Gibbs-Martin (1962) method for calculating crop diversification and other statistical measures for analysis. It was found that cropped area of the region has decreased in the reference period and the region is dominated by the cultivation of cereal crops and sugarcane. Low crop diversification was recorded in the region due to similar physical conditions and the practice of traditional agriculture. Production and productivity of crops have greatly increased primarily due to the increasing production of sugarcane. It is believed that the present study will help ascertain the ground reality of agriculture in the study region.","PeriodicalId":160152,"journal":{"name":"National Geographical Journal of India","volume":"482 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123033416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The shortage of houses, dilapidated housing conditions, and homelessness are the fundamental problems in urban India. Jabalpur city is not an exception. The primary reason behind the housing problem is the unprecedented growth of population, exorbitant land prices, and lack of affordability among the city dwellers. The present study deals with housing aspects such as housing condition, typology, household size, ownership status, number of rooms, and toilet facility in the premises. The study is based on the primary household's survey and the data collected from 600 households covering all 15 administrative zones. The forty households surveyed with an interview schedule for each zone. The study reveals poor housing conditions in the old settled parts of the city, inhabited by socially and economically deprived sections and the slum localities. This study is helpful for the researchers of urban studies and the policymakers of urban development.","PeriodicalId":160152,"journal":{"name":"National Geographical Journal of India","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125777267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The crime rate (per lakh women) in India has drastically increased from 18 to 58.8 from 2010 to 2018. This paper aims to reveal the trend and spatial pattern of the level of vulnerability of women’s in India and also analyse the correlation between some socio-economic indicators and crime rates against women. The standard deviation (SD) technique is used to measure the respective vulnerability of women in different states/UTs of India concerning the national average. Pearson coefficient of correlation is used to find out the correlation between the rate of crime and socio-economic indicators. The average crime rate against women from 2010 to 2018 is taken as a standard variable. Due to the under-reporting of such kinds of incidences, it is hard to find the exact trend and spatial pattern. If the official data are likely to show the reality then it is possible to look at regional patterns and it can lead to meaningful hypotheses formation for future work.","PeriodicalId":160152,"journal":{"name":"National Geographical Journal of India","volume":"176 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133255781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It frequently affects the life and livelihood of haor people every year. Women are the most vulnerable in this catastrophic situation compared to men. The present study attempted to explore the effects of flash floods on women at Tahirpur Upazila in the Sunamganj district. A semi-structured questionnaire survey on 172 married women chosen from four villages, seven focus group interviews, and ten key informant interviews was conducted for primary data collection. A Flash Flood Impact Ranking (FFIR) was also prepared to grade the impacts on women based on a 3-points weighted severity scale. The study findings revealed that women suffered from different diseases with physical injuries and faced many difficulties managing the shelter, food, safe water, sanitation, and fuel for cooking during the flood. The FFIR displayed that crops damage, lack of funds, job opportunities, sanitation problems, and food insecurities were the top five disaster impacts on women. It is suggested that Government and other agencies should increase women's coping strategies by ensuring health services and employment opportunities to mitigate damage and flash flood-related problems.","PeriodicalId":160152,"journal":{"name":"National Geographical Journal of India","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125968976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
