Ethanol is produced from renewable sources such as sugar cane, corn, potato, and biomass. It has high octane number, however, lower calorific value than that of gasoline and diesel. Ethanol is a corrosive fuel and there is no passenger car designed for 100% ethanol. Therefore, ethanol was mixed with diesel fuel to both eliminate its corrosive effect and increase its calorific value and used to examine engine performance and exhaust emissions in an SI engine at partial loads in this study. Four-stroke and four-cylinder test engine was used, and the experiments were carried out at constant speed of 2000 rpm, at 25 Nm and 50 Nm load, and with different excess air ratios (λ). The fuel mixture used in experimental studies was set as 80%Ethanol+20%Diesel (E80D20). To see the effect of the E80D20 mixture more clearly, the same experiments were also repeated with pure gasoline and pure ethanol, and these three fuel conditions were presented comparatively. At 25Nm and 0.9 lambda, the use of E80D20 resulted in a 15% reduction in BSFC compared to the use of pure ethanol. When emissions are considered, the use of E80D20 in lean mixture (1.1 λ) showed a decreasing trend in HC and NOx emissions.","PeriodicalId":159867,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Energy Studies","volume":"30 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139252165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Propane can combine with oxygen to perform a combustion reaction. Especially in homes and vehicles, propane combustion is frequently used and heat or light energy is released. In this study, premixed propane combustion was investigated. According to the findings, the O2 emission value also increases with the increase in propane equivalence. It was observed that if the propane equivalence was up to 0.8, the carbon dioxide emission remained at the optimum level. These results are actually similar in terms of light and heat emission. In fact, it was observed that the heat and light emission and the flame height increased to the highest level at less propane equivalence levels. In the study, it was seen that changing the equivalence ratio affects the ratios of various gases produced during combustion and the total heat output. These experiments help optimize the combustion properties of propane. It is also important for design and operating decisions regarding the use of propane in industrial processes.","PeriodicalId":159867,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Energy Studies","volume":"38 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139278241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to increasing the renewable energy production and adding nuclear into electricity generation mix, Turkey has a national policy to improve the efficiencies of energy producing and consuming sectors. Hamitabat natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant (CCPP) that is located in Lüleburgaz district of Kırklareli is the first CCPP of Turkey and it was renovated and upgraded to an installed capacity of 1220 MW in 2017 with a 520 million € project. In this study, the energy and exergy analysis of the Hamitabat CCPP is carried out. A thermodynamic model is built by applying the conservation of mass and energy principles and operating data are obtained from the plant operators. Exergy analysis is performed with the exergy balance equation to determine the exergy efficiencies and improvement potentials of all components. Also, parametric analyses are carried out to investigate the methods to enhance the performance of the plant. The plant has thermal and exergy efficiencies of 59.70% and 58.52%, respectively and these values are 13.70% and 13.52% higher than the thermal and exergy efficiencies of the original plant, respectively. Results showed that the combustion chamber (CC) has the highest rate of exergy destruction, and it is responsible for 77.61% of the total irreversibilities. The improvement potential of the CC is found to be 67.992 MW, and the prevention of heat loss from CC can increase the thermal and exergy efficiencies of the plant by 3.88% and 3.80%, respectively. Parametric analyses showed that the plant performance can be enhanced by increasing the inlet temperatures of high- and intermediate-pressure turbines, and decreasing the pressures of condenser and high-pressure turbine.","PeriodicalId":159867,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Energy Studies","volume":"75 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139280129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most important factor affecting the wind energy capture performance and aerodynamic behavior of the blade is the aerofil structure. In this study, the design and comparative performance analysis of NACA 2414 and NACA 6409 series airfoils under wind turbine conditions with 1x10^6 fixed reynolds number, 0-20^0 attack angles, constant air density and ambient conditions, 3kW nominal power and 2m blade length were carried out. The designs and analyzes for both airfoils were simulated using Q-Blade software version 2.0.5.2. While designing the blade, the propeller blade was divided into 20 equal parts so that there would be no aerodynamic interaction between the elements, and analyzes were made with a calculation method based on the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory. As a result, by comparing different features such as lift (Cl) and drag (Cd) coefficients, pressure distribution on the blades, power coefficients, it was seen that the NACA 6409 airfoil was more efficient than the NACA 2414 airfoil for small diameter wind turbines.","PeriodicalId":159867,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Energy Studies","volume":"1161 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139289275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the present study is to examine the performance and emissions of waste tyre pyrolysis oil (WTPO) added to diesel fuel at different percentages in an compression-ignition (CI) engine. In the engine, tests were carried out at 1500 rpm at four different loads (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). Adding WTPO to diesel fuel increased fuel consumption, CO2, HC, and CO emissions, while reducing exhaust gas temperature. At the same load, HC emission increased by 13.3% as the ratio of pyrolysis oil in the fuel blend increased. While the exhaust gas temperature value of diesel fuel was 261oC at 25% load, this temperature dropped to 251oC for P40 fuel. When the load was 25%, the amount of CO2 emission ascended between diesel fuel and P40 fuel was 38.67%, while this increment reached 59.5% at the highest load. Based on the emission values obtained from the experiments and the literature review, it has been determined that WTPO can be used as an alternative fuel in near future when the fuel characteristics of it will enhanced.","PeriodicalId":159867,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Energy Studies","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139305065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, external energy is needed to retrieve hydrogen in pure form where natural gas reforming is the most common method for over 90% of hydrogen production worldwide with carbon footprint followed by water electrolysis which is environmentally friendly. As clean methods PEM and AEL electrolysis are mature technologies while AEM takes increased attention with its unique dry cathode technology. This study examines how a nature-influenced (Bioinspired) and a serpentine flow channel design affects PEM electrolyzer and AEM electrolyzer cell functionality. The performance of the electrolyzers is assessed in terms of experimental polarization curves. It was decided to utilize Sustainion® XA-9 Alkaline Ionomer Powder as the ionomer solution and Fumasep FAS-50 as the membrane. The laminar flow analysis is performed using COMSOL Multiphysics. The efficiency of the PEM electrolyzer is 71% with the serpentine flow, while the efficiency is 73% with the biomimetic flow. The efficiency of the AEM water electrolyser is 25% using the same design. The low performance in AEM was interpreted as the inability to distribute the catalyst homogeneously on the membrane surface.","PeriodicalId":159867,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Energy Studies","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139314191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the main purposes of DMFC is to improve the flow plate in order to provide less pressure drop in all channels. Therefore, different leaf types have been investigated to improve the flow distribution performance of DMFC. Mulberry, Loquat and Fig leaves with similar properties were sized using the COMSOL Multiphysics program and designed by examining their environmental and physical properties. Flow and pressure distributions in accordance with the flow field design similar to leaf dimensions in two dimensions were investigated. The biological and physical properties of each bio-inspired leaf design are described and its compliance with the DMFC is explained. Finally, flow images are presented with a comparison of flow areas. When these studies in the literature are examined; while applying the bio-inspired approach, it was seen that the shape similarity approach was adopted. However, by specifying the leaf, the flow field was not created exactly in the size of the leaf. Although there is a research on the flow design in the PEM fuel cell, it has not been used at the same rate for the DMFC. Considering that it is suitable for the DMFC system with the flow channel designs in the bipolar plate in question, it is expected that the performances that will increase the flow transmission to optimum levels will also increase when used.","PeriodicalId":159867,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Energy Studies","volume":"78 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139317589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Türkiye put in force this practice in certain months of 2020 and 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic that led to serious decline in energy consumption in this period. The aim of this study is to find out the contribution of remote working on reducing fuel consumption in passenger car and electricity demand in case the country’s whole potential is used. This article also analyzes the effect of remote working practices on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Results show that the country can reduce 1.8 million tons of oil equivalent of its’ energy consumption which corresponds to 1.66% of the total energy consumption and USD 1.4 billion with 2019 prices. With a total of 7.73 million tons CO2 eq. emissions mitigation, Türkiye will be able to reduce its transport and electricity related emissions by 3.2% and 3.79%, respectively. Therefore, considering that Türkiye is a net fossil fuel importer country and a party to the Paris Agreement, it is necessary to promote remote working as a complementary energy efficiency and climate change policy. It is beneficial to consider the effect of remote working on energy consumption, including natural gas, during energy crises.","PeriodicalId":159867,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Energy Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139338346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study takes place during a period of rapid electric vehicle adoption and escalating demand for renewable energy. It presents optimization and comparative analysis of hybrid and off-grid charging stations across six distinct regions. The process of establishing off-grid hybrid charging stations in each region is critically analyzed, using the HOMER program to determine the most efficient placement. HOMER, an optimization tool for renewable energy systems, enables lifecycle cost analysis. This method not only strengthens our energy independence but also supports the economy and reduces carbon emissions, positively impacting the environment. Comparative optimization analysis, based on technical and economic metrics across the provinces, identifies Manisa as the optimal location for the planned electric vehicle charging station. The station is expected to generate a total energy of 3,049,337 kWh per year, with a Net Present Value of 7.24 M$, a Levelized Cost of Energy of $0.441 per kWh, an annual operation cost of $175,795, and an initial capital cost of 3.69 M$.
