Like conventional antennas, their radiation patterns are usually displayed as pattern cuts versus frequency. However, it is desirable to add a new parameter, the scan angle. The resulting representation shows a better overview of the overall behaviour of the antenna. Such a representation, a two-dimensional colour plot (2D-colour plot), has previously been used for fixed-beam antennas to show their radiation patterns over half-space. We use 2D-colour graphical representations to visualise radiation patterns of phased arrays employing digital phase shifters. Phase quantisation effects are clearly and quickly identified over the antenna operating range. A software program based on simple array theory has been developed. Graphical investigations of the radiation characteristics versus the number of phase shifter bits, over scanning and frequency ranges were carried out. Results were obtained for linear arrays of 64 point sources with half-wavelength spacing.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. Its design equations and scaling factor can be modified and defined according to the dimensions and materials of the lens and lines. Combining the lens with phase shifters, the lens and antenna array can generate multiple focused beams with a relatively small spot size. In wireless communications, the lens can allow us to increase the channel capacity by adding space division multiplexing and increasing the signal-to-interference ratio, S/I. Focusing the beam adds to both the angular and radial resolution. For application in ground-penetrating radar, a Rotman lens reduces the burden on signal processing as well as its size and weight. Using a ferroelectric material such as BaSrTiO/sub 3/, we can fabricate the lens and voltage-tunable delay lines (phase shifters) in thin film geometry by laser ablation.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. Imaging at higher fields has several benefits, so that images with much greater detail can be obtained using high field MRI systems with high static (B/sub 0/) field strength. Operation at high frequencies, however, adds significant technical challenges to the design of radiofrequency (RF) coils. We address the physics associated with RF coils and their electromagnetic interactions with biological tissue. This is accomplished by examining the B/sub 1/ field distribution and the RF power requirements between 135 MHz and 470 MHz. We also propose methods to optimize the B/sub 1/ field distribution at ultra high field (/spl ges/ 300 MHz). Using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, antenna array concepts are utilized to excite a volume head coil (TEM resonator) such that an optimal B/sub 1/ field distribution is achieved in the head. Input excitations with both variable phase and magnitude are evaluated for 2, 3, 4, 6, and 10 excitation ports in a 24-strut TEM resonator loaded with an 18-tissue anatomically detailed human head model. Finally, true phased array is implemented to modify the phase and magnitude of all the 24 possible ports in the 24-strut TEM resonator. By properly exciting each drive port, significantly improved B/sub 1/ field homogeneity was obtained.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. A rectangular slot array in the upper side of a parallel plate waveguide forms the main antenna structure. In previous works, the authors have presented one and dual tilted-beam antennas (see Castaner, M.S. et al., IEEE AP-S, vol.3, p.1608-11, 2000; Proc. AP-2000 Millennium, 2000) for the reception of Hispasat or Astra satellite emissions in the 12 GHz band. The problem of the broadside beam antenna is to avoid the grating lobes. The main goal of the work presented here is getting a low cost broadside antenna that does not need a dielectric material inside the parallel plate to solve the grating lobes problem.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. Furthermore, the technical development of areas such as future 21 GHz-band satellite broadcasting systems is also in progress. One of the major technical difficulties with the satellite broadcasting systems using such frequency bands is the large rain attenuation caused by heavy rainfall. A method for compensating for rain attenuation is necessary to avoid the interruption of broadcasting reception. We have been studying an advanced broadcasting satellite system having an on-board large-scale phased array antenna. This system can compensate for rain attenuation by increasing the radiation power over areas of heavy rainfall. The adaptive pattern synthesis technique of the phased array antenna makes it possible to reconfigure the radiation pattern (equivalent isotropically radiated power: EIRP) according to the distribution of rainfall on the service area. We describe the results of a basic study focused on (1) the radiation pattern requirements that systems such as broadcasting satellite systems with variable EIRIP will have to satisfy and, (2) pattern synthesis methods for an array-fed reflector antenna based on singular value decomposition (SVD).","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. Primarily used in addition to radiation therapy, hyperthermia, or the elevation of cancerous tissue temperatures, has been shown to have clinical value in a number of studies despite serious technical difficulties. There are few reports of the use of detailed, three-dimensional models of hyperthermia in transient temperature optimization procedures. In this work, a method is presented for the transient optimization of hyperthermia sessions. A key feature of the method is the reduction of the extremely high-order models resulting from full three-dimensional models of hyperthermia via the spectral Lanczos decomposition method (SLDM). The intention of this work is to illustrate how the SLDM can be applied to the prediction and optimization of transient temperature fields.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. We conclude with the observation that the leaky component of the first higher order mode in the leaky wave antenna radiates in a relatively narrow band. In addition, we also observe that only a part of the power is radiated in this mode and the balance goes to excite the bound first higher order mode, which produces standing waves along the antenna that induce radiation as an array of elementary oscillators.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. We present an original design of a small sized antenna which is to operate in several frequency bands and to generate multiple linear polarization. One of the most preferable method for the development of small planar antennas is the use of a short connected to the antenna element and the ground. In this way, the conductive planar elements - sometimes as small as 0. 1 wavelength - are still capable of radiating sufficiently electromagnetic energy. The form and position of the short (posts), as well as the position of the feeding probe, exert a strong effect on the electrical properties of the antenna.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest. The coplanar patch antenna consists of a patch surrounded by closely spaced ground conductor and a CPW feed line, which has a similar geometric configuration as the loop slot antenna. Simulation and experiment results clearly demonstrated that the CPA behaves, particularly the resonant property, more similar to the microstrip patch antenna rather than a loop slot antenna. Simulated and measured results for the return loss, radiation pattern and gain were presented. A good agreement between the simulation and measurement has been obtained. The similarity of the microstrip patch antenna and coplanar patch antenna, and some design consideration for the patch have been described.","PeriodicalId":159827,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium. 2001 Digest.
