An accurate estimation of the mobile terminal (MT) location cannot be obtained if the radio signals are corrupted by noise or other sources of signal degradation. As a consequence, processing algorithms capable of generating a single point of interception from many noisy samples need to be implemented. Simulation results presented in this paper demonstrate that a simple and computational efficient recursive filtering technique is effective in reducing the uncertainty introduced by measurement noise in the user location estimate produced by CDMA-based dynamic satellite systems.","PeriodicalId":159750,"journal":{"name":"Vehicular Technology Conference. The location algorithm is developed based on the distribution of times of arrival (TOAs) generated from multipath scattering models that have been published in the literature. By matching the statistics of the measured TOAs of several multipath arrivals with those produced by the scattering models, estimates of the line-of-sight (LOS) TOAs between each base station (BS) and the MS are obtained. The LOS TOAs can then be used in any traditional TOA location algorithm. The algorithm shows a significant improvement in location accuracy for a TOA system in NLOS environment.","PeriodicalId":159750,"journal":{"name":"Vehicular Technology Conference. In this paper, we present several different QoS schemes designed for allowing QoS support among multiple heterogeneous wireless networks. Fault-tolerant architectures are also introduced to provide continued QoS support in the case of network failures. In addition to an overlay or hierarchical wireless architecture, we believe that it may be possible to achieve a certain level of fault tolerance by allowing users to access one of several wireless networks. Such a level of fault tolerance is likely to be time and location-dependent. A simulation model has been developed to evaluate the effectiveness of various fault-tolerant architectures and schemes in terms of QoS improvement. The simulation model will be extended to grow into a network simulator for designing wireless networks with a certain QoS guarantees.","PeriodicalId":159750,"journal":{"name":"Vehicular Technology Conference. Due to the digital nature of the control of spatial filtering a quantization error is readily present. This is due to the fact that weights and phase information is provided with the aid of finite wordlength processors. This paper presents the development of a five-element digital beam-forming antenna for RFID (radio frequency identification) reader operating on the 2.4 GHz ISM-band. The paper presents a detailed description of the operation of beam-form control including the analysis of 4-bit phase shifters. In addition, the result shows that the quantization error, even if it small, can degrade the pattern so dramatically making it unacceptable. However, we show that with as low number of control bits as four the desired radiation characteristics can be achieved.","PeriodicalId":159750,"journal":{"name":"Vehicular Technology Conference. It does not rely on the Gaussian assumption of the complex equivalent low-pass channel process, and does not require the knowledge of the channel. Since wireless multimedia is among the intended applications of this standard, JPEG 2000 has to be robust to channel errors. Our results indicate that the quality of received imagery using JPEG 2000 even with error resilient provisions could be very poor. Worst case PSNR serves as an important bench mark for comparing image transmission schemes and a larger worst case peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) is preferred. We present a scheme for increasing worst case PSNR, known as transmission diversity for JPEG 2000. In TD-JPEG 2000, instead of transmitting an image at full rate, the image is transmitted twice at half rate. The image encoder and decoder structures are given and a detailed operation of the decoder based on a set of rules is provided. It is observed that the worst case PSNR improves significantly compared to conventional JPEG 2000 when our method is applied to the transmission of images over noisy channels. Additionally, subjective evaluations of the received images verify the improvements in picture quality.","PeriodicalId":159750,"journal":{"name":"Vehicular Technology Conference. In particular, uplink channel capacity is relatively low due to low-power handheld terminals, collision of many terminals, and fading by long propagation time. Also long propagation delay limits the number of data-retransmissions for real time traffic, and small capacity limits the number of data-retransmissions for non real time traffic. For these reasons, comparative studies are required in order to identify the most appropriate satellite-based RLC (radio link control) protocol for global mobile multimedia communication via LEO satellite networks. In this paper we consider two kinds of traffic, real time traffic and non real time traffic. For real time traffic, a class of adaptive error-control schemes using both the code rate of FEC and frame length based on the estimated channel state/condition are used as an RLC protocol with transparent mode or unacknowledged mode. Also, for non real time traffic, a hybrid ARQ type II/III protocol is used as an RLC protocol with acknowledged mode.","PeriodicalId":159750,"journal":{"name":"Vehicular Technology Conference.
