Computerization brings benefits in diversifying expressions and providing a simple and easy search function. On the other hand, the computerization of textbooks shows slow progress because textbooks require the book-like story organization such as chapter, paragraph, contents composition etc., which is developed by a textbook author. This means computerization is not always intended for better comprehension of learners. We have developed a software package, aiming to surmount the disadvantages of electronic textbooks and help an author develop his or her own original self-education material, such as image atlantes and illustrated textbooks for medical education. As the software outputs the dynamic HTML files, students can read them, using a Web browser. The software has the following functions: (i) points out the specific position on an image, which is associated with a keyword in a text, (ii) content configured and classified from various viewpoints, (iii) maintain ease of searching, which is the benefit brought by computerization.","PeriodicalId":159453,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 5th International Workshop on Enterprise Networking and Computing in Healthcare Industry (HealthCom)","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116904111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of information technology to support healthcare in the UK entails a close collaboration between many geographically distributed actors. ASP and Web services are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to selling software the traditional way. We look at ASP as a possible solution to the NHS need to induce uniformity of configurations across the health sector, which might strengthen the mediating position of the NHS information authority and how well the technology is suited to the local work practices of medical practitioners. The result of our study shows the need for a more transparent implementation process. Also noticed were major trepidations from medical practitioners, regarding ASP business model unsuitability to improve the NHS information authority's efforts to fully support healthcare process and relevant health services. Most likely because of its apparent top-down approach.","PeriodicalId":159453,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 5th International Workshop on Enterprise Networking and Computing in Healthcare Industry (HealthCom)","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122226390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is important to integrate these information systems developed independently by diverse set of people. Since healthcare involves very high level of diversity of knowledge, the interoperability of healthcare information systems poses some difficult problems. The task is challenging given the semantic differences of messages used by different types of healthcare professionals (e.g., physicians and nurses). We analyze the problem of interoperability with reference to different solutions, and present our experience in the development of a solution for the interoperability of clinical information systems based on HL7, CORBA and Java for a modern hospital in Australia.","PeriodicalId":159453,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 5th International Workshop on Enterprise Networking and Computing in Healthcare Industry (HealthCom)","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122913169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The EVE consists of rescuers equipped with wearable PDAs, medics with laptops plus GPS, a rescue command center controlled by the leaders of the rescue and medical teams, and a monitor subsystem including physical sensors, such as an oximeter and an electro-cardiograph, provided with wireless transmission for the injured. Each part communicates with all the others using Bluetooth. The EVE improves the rescue work by monitoring rescuers' physical conditions and the environment temperature to give an early warning. It also helps first-aid work by providing medics with real-time information about the injured and having in band the medics' positions for efficient allocation of medical resources. In addition, the system collects instant medical information of the injured through sensors and transmits the data to the nearby medics or rescuers, which are further relayed back to the rescue command post. The unique feature of Bluetooth is exploited by the EVE system to construct a Bluetooth relay network, a Scatternet.","PeriodicalId":159453,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 5th International Workshop on Enterprise Networking and Computing in Healthcare Industry (HealthCom)","volume":" 30","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132158639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patient data is not available in some situations, either because the infrastructure is inaccessible (as in a natural disaster) or because there is no way to link the patient to the infrastructure (e.g., the patient cannot supply necessary identification information). We describe the Poket Doktor System, an architecture that allows an individual to carry personal electronic medical information on a wireless handheld device such as a smart card, cell phone, or PDA. Medical workers can obtain this information wirelessly using handheld devices, desktop computers, network access points, etc. In this way, patients play an active role in the medical information infrastructure, resulting in a better healthcare delivery system.","PeriodicalId":159453,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 5th International Workshop on Enterprise Networking and Computing in Healthcare Industry (HealthCom)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130146455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We use a dynamic simulation model to estimate the current performance of a moderate size radiological unit in an urban health care center. The principal findings include description of existing informatics processes, as well as calculated results from dynamic statistical simulation of the system. Bottlenecks were observed throughout the process, with simulation estimated maximum queues ranging from 33.9 hours (fluoroscopy) to 254.3 hours (general X-rays). The impact of digital systems (e.g. PACS) on each delay point is also discussed. We demonstrate that the dynamic modelling approach such as by the ARENA model can answer specific questions pertaining to streamlining of complex, multistage medical information processes and assist in cost/benefit analysis for implementation of all digital alternatives to existing systems.","PeriodicalId":159453,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 5th International Workshop on Enterprise Networking and Computing in Healthcare Industry (HealthCom)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128100143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Researchers [P. Neafsey et al., (2001)] have investigated the role of information appliances in the education of older adults and have shown that these appliances can change the knowledge and self-efficacy behavior of this demographic. We modify the approach by designing an information appliance and medical information system to detect potential interactions, and provide educational materials at the point of product selection prior to the patient purchasing the product.","PeriodicalId":159453,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 5th International Workshop on Enterprise Networking and Computing in Healthcare Industry (HealthCom)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116408656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Taoka","doi":"10.1109/HEALTH.2003.1218714","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/HEALTH.2003.1218714","url":null,"abstract":"The telehealth system is a type of telecare, which transmits health-related data of its users such as blood pressure, ECG, and blood oxygen to a remote medical institution via a telecommunications network. Eighty Japanese local governments are already implementing such systems, utilizing a total of more than 10000 devices. We analyze the economic benefits of the telehealth system in the following four regions in Japan: Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture; Nishiaizu Town and Katsurao Village, Fukushima Prefecture; and Sangawa Town, Kagawa Prefecture. The contingent valuation method (CVM), which has been recently widely adopted in the fields of environmental economics and health economics to measure the benefits of services which are not traded in the market, is used. We conducted a survey of 348 users in Kamaishi City on their willingness to pay (WTP) to use the service. According to their WTP, we estimate the demand function of the system, which is assumed to be a logistic curve. The average amount of WTP calculated is 4519 yen (approximately US$37). We then compare the benefits with the costs of the system, which consists of equipment, salaries of doctors and nurses, and other operations. The ratio of benefits over costs (B/C ratio) is about 1.07, which implies that the system of Kamaishi City yields more benefits than costs. This is a rather surprising result when viewed in comparison with the systems of other regions. We also analyze how the benefits expressed in terms of WTP are attributed in exact monetary terms to factors such as (a) less anxiety in day-to-day life, (b) stabilization of illness, (c) enhancement of health consciousness, and (d) decrease in medical expenditures. The parties bearing the costs of the system are identified, namely, the amounts paid by individual users and public fund such as tax and medical insurance. Thus, we suggest reimbursement to the telehealth system using medical insurance.","PeriodicalId":159453,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 5th International Workshop on Enterprise Networking and Computing in Healthcare Industry (HealthCom)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129442100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
