Next concern of semantic Web is the exchange of rules in markup language form. The rules should be represented in such a way as to allow software agents to process and browse them for human comprehension. For this purpose, we propose a language eXtensible Rule Markup Language (XRML). XRML is composed of rule identification, rule structure, and rule triggering markup languages. In XRML, a critical concern is how to extract the structured rules implicitly embedded in the Web pages and keep consistency between the two. By using the XRML, the Web based knowledge management systems (KMS) can be integrated with rule-based expert systems. The advanced architecture with XRML can extend the application of KMS to automated form processing, preventive auditing, rule exchange and integration, and agent-based e-commerce.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. In such framework, online learning is becoming an important tool to allow the flexibility and quality requested by such a kind of learning process. In the recent past, a great number of on-line platforms have been introduced on the market showing different characteristics and services. A series of features should be taken into account when one evaluates e-learning platforms, starting from the function and usability of the overall learning system in the context of the human, social and cultural organization within which it is to be used. Obviously, the analysis of the features of a system is not sufficient: it is also important to understand how they are integrated to facilitate learning and training and what principles are applied to guide the way the system is used. To evaluate them both pedagogical and technological aspects must be carefully evaluated. This paper proposes a model for describing and characterizing on-line learning platform component. The model is then used to evaluate the most known existing commercial platforms.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. From automating inventory replenishment to replacing traditional sales channels with Web-based interfaces, the concept of electronic commerce presents a number of research challenges and opportunities. A key prerequisite for leveraging EC applications is a thorough understanding of how customers interact with these applications. A primary challenge for the successful design and implementation of these applications is managing not only the increasingly heterogeneous nature of the task performed in the context of EC, but the wide variety of interaction devices (e.g., wireless phones, PDAs, etc.) that customers use to execute these tasks. The significance and primary contribution of this research effort is to adapt and apply task-technology fit (TTF) theory to an EC domain. Using the techniques outlined by Goodhue (1995), TTF constructs for an EC task domain are derived by applying factors/principles from Web usability research. The TTF determinants of task, technology, and individual characteristics are modified to fit an EC domain. An electronic commerce TTF instrument is presented along with a research model for better understanding the relationships between independent and dependent variables. Finally, plans and implications for future research are discussed.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. Amidst conflicting reports on China's B2B growth forecasts and uncertain survival prospects of e-markets, strategies for successful deployment become important. In this study we analyse the characteristics and deployment strategy of 4 e-markets that cater to China trade. Based on our analysis of these e-markets and review of extant research and frameworks that address the issues of e-market participation and deployment, we conclude that existing IS frameworks that help managers effectively deploy e-markets must be revised and augmented. A new framework for successful deployment of e-markets is developed. We conclude with a summary of our research and directions for further research.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. We construct a path model for testing our research hypotheses on three subsets of a representative survey of 1,308 cases, 469 general, 215 which target businesses (B2B), and 224 companies which target consumers (B2C). We find that information and functionality richness as well as keeping the site up to date are the key drivers of success for general companies. The key success factors for B2B-companies appear to be the interactive character of the site as well as keeping it up-to-date. B2C-companies can increase their success in e-business if their Web sites show content from a variety of media as well as if they are easy to navigate and readily accessible.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. The concept of the remote delivery of software by application service providers (ASPs) has captured the imagination of many academics, practitioners and technology analysts. Yet analyst predictions and expectations with respect to the growth of this new e-business model have not been realised. Although many independent software vendors (ISVs) and other firms such as Telcos' have embraced the ASP business model, few have managed to deploy this business model profitably. Many firms that entered the market in the dot.com wave have struggled to stay in business due to the highly dynamic and turbulent nature of the ASP market. This paper analyses how ASPs are developing their market entry strategies with a view to creating strategic differentiation. It first gives an overview of the outsourcing and ASP literature and then examines the strategies developed by two ASP market entrants: a global telecommunications firm and a European ASP startup. Whilst these firms occupy different segments of the technology sector, the research findings show that they both fail to differentiate their products and services resulting in a failure to successfully develop an ASP business. The paper concludes by suggesting that ASP market entrants need to become more adept at developing strategic partnerships with firms in the technology sector if they are to offer the end-user an outsourced business solution, which can compete on price, quality and service.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. However, during workflow enactment, numerous workers with different skills and expertise may share the same role in an organization, making it hard to select appropriate individuals based merely on the assignment relation between a role and a task. To bridge the gap between abstract roles and real workers, this work proposes a multi-criteria assessment model capable of evaluating the suitability of individual workers for a specified task according to their capabilities, social relationships, and existing tasks. Candidates are ranked based on their suitability scores to support workflow administrators in selecting appropriate workers to perform the tasks assigned to a given role. The proposed assessment model overcomes the lack of role-based task assignment in current workflow management systems.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. With the unfolding of electronic government (e-government) changes to the way government works also seem to be imminent. Electronic government increasingly impacts business processes and workflows in the public sector. The BPC/ICT research, hence, has the capacity to directly inform both the research and practice of electronic government. In this paper, the findings of the BPC/ICT literature are reviewed and discussed regarding their applicability to electronic government. Both the theory and preliminary empirical evidence suggest that electronic government must be seen as a special case of ICT-enabled business process change.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. By identifying the implicit communities' relationships to a specific enterprise, the information can be organized into stakeholder groups and used for 'listening' to the external environments. A proto-typology was derived using analysis of 445 hypertext links and their associated textual annotations (comments) to the Web site of MicroStrategy, a business intelligence vendor. The proto-typology can be used not only to identify independent but implicit community of users who virtually interact and relate with an enterprise, but also understand how the enterprise supports their interests and value creation activities.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003.
