This paper shows how hyperbooks for some subjects in Engineering Education can be used together in a hyperlibrary. Several teachers are working together in the development of computer-aided teaching material. Animations are used to visualize different parts of the subjects, both in theory parts and examples. Simulation programs are used to give the students an understanding of a system's behaviour.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":159168,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE 1st International Conference on Multi Media Engineering Education","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126200454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many students do not fully understand the complexities of this interaction. Traditional lectures and tutorials alone do not do justice to the level of interaction and a more interactive educational approach is required. This paper discusses an interactive learning approach built around an educational computer system called LAND. Environmental and land use modellers have made considerable steps forward in the development of theory and the incorporation of this theory into computer models. Also, recent developments in computer software provide considerable potential for creating a user friendly, interactive, dynamic, easy to learn, and visually stimulating computer environment which can assist students in interacting with computer models. LAND has brought together these developments in a form that can assist in education. This paper introduces the teaching aims and approach, briefly describes the model and then outlines experiences in using this interactive teaching tool.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":159168,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE 1st International Conference on Multi Media Engineering Education","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121213517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Programming subjects usually rely on static methods such as overhead transparencies, blackboards and textbooks to illustrate operations on data structures, while laboratory environments rarely provide the graphical support students need to experiment with algorithms. The system discussed, DRUIDS (Display Resource for Understanding Internal Data Structures), establishes a link between instruction and experiment by animating textbook algorithms applied to common data structures, and by allowing the student to exercise their own program code. The resulting changes to the program state can be viewed dynamically at several levels of abstraction, including flow of program control, variable tracing and data structure state.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":159168,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE 1st International Conference on Multi Media Engineering Education","volume":"326 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116533763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To create and optimize a parallel viewing document for both the writer and the end user, special techniques can be used in a desktop publisher. In the example, we convert and enhance the Australian Standard AS 4100-1990 Steel Code into a document viewing format. This document has a high level of technical content with little explanation. The idea was to create an electronic version of this document that all possible readers could understand. A parallel revision document was created to be used in context to the code. This user would read this revision document and refer to strategic parts of the code. The code, however, is a legal document and must be an accurate representation of the original. The application of parallel viewing documents is enormous. Any technical document that needs explanation could be placed in this format to provide a greater service. The implementation with Interleaf and WorldView appears to be the best solution presently available to the problem. As the use of document viewing becomes commonplace, it is likely that these techniques will be broadly applied. Flexibility of this form is enforced by the ability to edit and rebuild an entire collection in hours, which can be hardly done with printed matter. New documents can be edited and built into viewing collections quickly also in a relatively short period of time. The final products are extremely high quality and of greater utility than present documents.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":159168,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE 1st International Conference on Multi Media Engineering Education","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128548016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is asserted that a failure to change will lead to further decline of electrical power engineering due to the pressures of the information explosion. The limited penetration of multi-media is ascribed to both fears that the new technology will distance students further from practical engineering and to the competition for academic staff time between research, teaching and administration. It is recommended that a specialist support facility be established and that links between power engineering educators be improved. Two simple examples of the use of multi-media in electrical power engineering are described.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":159168,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings IEEE 1st International Conference on Multi Media Engineering Education","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129921501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
