Optimal management of the Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEV) charging requires the forecast of the electrical load for future hours. The forecasting module needs to be online (i.e update and make forecast for the future hours, every hour). The inputs to the predictor are historical electrical and weather data. Various data driven machine learning algorithms are compared to derive the most suitable model. The results indicate that an online forecasting method has an error between 2-5% for the future 24-hour. The decentralized management system works well with the forecasting data.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121535891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lebanon has no organized system of waste removal: disposal and waste accumulation increase around towns and villages. Growth in population and also in per capita consumption has led to a dire need for improved waste management strategies. An array of waste management methods must be employed. In another hand, parabolic trough solar collector technology is considered the most established solar thermal technology for power production; it is preferred for steam and hot water generation because high temperatures can be achieved. It has been used in large power plants and has been demonstrated a promising renewable energy technology for the future. So, the contribution of solar thermal energy, waste biogas power, and cogeneration techniques are studied to improve the performance of Deir Ammar combined cycle power plant in order to increase water steam cycle efficiency and to decrease fuel consumption and to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116237085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main idea in this work is to design a large PV system with almost zero cost of land needed for the installation, and without the need of batteries. The proposed PV system makes use of special areas of the Lebanese lands; the middle of high-ways which are usually left unoccupied without being exploited by any other business. This way, the traditional high cost of PV systems residing in the land and storage is eliminated. The fact that we do not need batteries in the proposed PV system results from the ability to connect the output power directly to the public utility grid. The design consists of 20,476 PV panels that cover the middle of the high-way extending from Tyre to Saida, with a distance of 27,300 meters and 2 meters wide. The resulting PV system has a capacity of 6.2 MW, and the total initial cost is ~8.845 M$, however, after 25 years (which is the proposed lifetime of the PV system) the project would generate a total of ~54.7 M$. Moreover, the PV system would provide net reduction of CO2 and GHG emissions of ~7,388 tCO2/year.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134265883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to its non biodegradable nature it cannot be easily disposed off. Pyrolysis is a tertiary recycling method which can convert plastics into valuable petroleum resources. In this work, pyrolysis of waste high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic was carried out in a fixed bed reactor heated for a final temperature of 500°C under a heating rate of 10°C/min. Direct pyrolysis led to wax production while a two step pyrolysis (setup 1) led to the production of 32.7% liquid and 65.3% gas. Thus a setup with reflux (setup 2) was designed and the liquid yield increased to 78.2%. The liquid fractions obtained were analyzed for composition using a gas chromatograph coupled to a Mass spectrometer and a flame ionization detector (GC-MS-FID). Specific diesel-like fuel production, as reported to HDPE mass, with setup 2 was estimated to be 2.3 times higher than setup 1 The physical properties of the pyrolytic oil (viscosity, density) were found to be lower than that of diesel fuel due to the presence of light compounds.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130312034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EVs can serve dual purpose if they are properly managed and controlled, they can serve as a clean transportation medium and they can also provide power storage and ancillary services to the smart grid when they are plugged-in. One of the main important ancillary services that EVs are capable of providing to smart grids is frequency regulation, which is the mean of controlling frequency oscillations. EVs can participate in this operation by charging their batteries from the grid during frequency regulation-down and by discharging their batteries from the grid during frequency regulation-up. In this paper, we propose a mechanism to maximize the number of EVs participating in the frequency regulation market. Maximizing the number of EVs participating in the regulation process depends very much on the number of EVs that can hear the call for frequency regulation at that moment of time. Our mechanism increases the throughput and decreases the delay of EVs that are acting as relay nodes to rebroadcast the frequency regulation signal in a smart grid environment.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114435147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The overall system modules consist of a hybrid energy storage system, two interior permanent magnet synchronous motors and the vehicle model. Other blocks like braking forces distribution module and electrical/mechanical braking forces quantification will also be briefly described. The types and conditions of roads are also integrated in order to study the vehicle behavior. Simulation results validate the global control strategy performance and consistency of the integration taking into consideration the multi-domain aspects of the system.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124664110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We analysed the models to estimate global horizontal irradiance measurements in four Moroccan regions. The data consists of a one-year period at four solar irradiance monitoring stations located in the south and south-east of the country, Missour, Erfoud, Zagora and Tantan. Several empirical clear sky models are considered for a Moroccan case study. These models are validated using (GHI) measurements from different stations over different time periods. The disagreement between the various measurements of GHI and the semi-empirical models used for the estimation of radiation in atmospheric physics and radiative transfer modeling is sometimes significant, especially in the presence of clouds or large concentration of aerosols. A good agreement is noticed between the measured values and those estimated by some models.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122615362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MMC upper and lower arms processes pulsating power at fundamental and second harmonic phase components. As a consequence, arms are expected to buffer the energy difference exchanged between DC-link and each AC-phase. This buffered energy is translated into increased cell voltage ripple when operating at low phase frequency. Several remedies have been presented in literature, which can be classified under software and hardware methods. To address this short-come we introduced a plug-in hardware alternative that permit energy exchange between cells from upper and lower arms thus remarkably reducing capacitor voltage ripples caused by out of phase energy variations. The proposed method can improve MMC performance over the full operation region and is mainly attractive to low frequency operation such as in variable-speed motor drives where higher-than-nominal torques might be required for a wide speed range. Performed simulations over a synchronous machine using maximum torque per current control technique, conforms well with the analytical findings and shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134251045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A pilot scale anaerobic digester was built to test the efficiency of the process as the variation of methane (CH4) generation with respect to variation in daily ambient temperature. At the end of the 13 week experiment, the CH4 content in the produced biogas was 65 % and the CO2 content was 34%. As for the volume of produced CH4, it was observed to be about 23 L/week for a weekly loading rate of 4,000 g of food and landscape waste. These results were used to estimate the impact of an up-scaled system to treat the waste generated in Okaibeh town. It was found that the large scale design could produce around 27.4 MWh per month of electrical energy which is more than 2 times the electricity needed to satisfy the consumption of the municipality building and the street lights during times of power outage.","PeriodicalId":158844,"journal":{"name":"2016 3rd International Conference on Renewable Energies for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133513044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
