It is best used in a course on marketing research. The decision in the case centers on a fund manager's need to generate additional profit from a mutual fund. To do this, he needs to determine a new pricing structure for the fund. The case presents students with the results of a real-world conjoint analysis and requires them to work through the pricing and profit implications of that analysis.","PeriodicalId":158767,"journal":{"name":"EduRN: Other Social Sciences Education (Topic)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124197272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We theorize that during a period of destigmatization, the effects of stigma persist more strongly for people stigmatized by association than for those directly stigmatized. We propose that this occurs because, during periods of destigmatization, conscious prejudice has diminished but nonconscious prejudice remains, so people correct for their explicit biases toward individuals with the stigmatizing trait but are unaware of their ongoing implicit prejudice toward those stigmatized by association. Our evidence comes from archival data on individual employment in film during the cold war years in Hollywood. It shows that as the stigma of being on an anticommunist blacklist weakened, the employment penalty for being a coworker of a blacklisted artist was greater than the penalty for actually having been on the blacklist itself. A supplemental experiment, designed to address the limitations of archival data, shows the same imbalanced employment penalties in another stigma currently undergoing destigmatization (that of physical disability). Paradoxically, as stigmas recede, harmful effects persist more for associates of stigmatized individuals than for the stigmatized themselves. This paper was accepted by David Simchi-Levi, organizations.","PeriodicalId":158767,"journal":{"name":"EduRN: Other Social Sciences Education (Topic)","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116047632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This general education offering of my design is organized around ten large themes and does not follow a strict chronological sequence. Significant numbers of the respondents reported that they are “more likely to vote in future elections,” “will try to learn more to understand current events,” and “changed how they think about some important public issues.” Those positive responses combine the strongly agree and agree options on a five-point Likert scale. This research examines whether it is possible to measure reliably both how well students achieve specific course objectives, especially those aimed at mastery of central concepts, and whether the experience of a single course can affect larger political attitudinal and behavioral change in students.","PeriodicalId":158767,"journal":{"name":"EduRN: Other Social Sciences Education (Topic)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123668960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to help students pass state tests, Success Maker, which is an educational software, was integrated into the math curriculum. The effect of Success Maker on state tests in math had not been examined using quantitative data. The research question was regarding the effect of Success Maker on proficiency in math as measured by state testing. The theoretical framework was based on the social learning theory. Archived state scores in math were collected from 2 elementary school cohorts where the first cohort used Success Maker in the classroom and the second cohort did not use Success Maker in the classroom. Data were analyzed using an independent samples t test to examine the difference in the means of state scores in math of 2 cohorts. The findings revealed that state scores in math improved after Success Maker was integrated into the curriculum. Successful integration of software into the math curriculum could help elementary school math teachers help their students meet academic standards.","PeriodicalId":158767,"journal":{"name":"EduRN: Other Social Sciences Education (Topic)","volume":"171 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128268507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Offered in the Fall of 2012, 3.091x covers chemical principles explained by examination of the properties of materials, and follows the curriculum of a first-year course which has been offered at MIT for several decades. The report describes the course structure, in terms of the number of basic e-text, auto-graded problems, and video components. Following a methodology established for analysis of the first 17 HarvardX and MITx courses (Ho et al, HarvardX and MITx: The first year of open online courses), course registrants are described in terms of viewed, explored, and certified sub-populations, together with demographics. The diversity of student activity in the course, and the persistence of student interactions with the courseware, are addressed. The report concludes with descriptions of special features in 3.091x, including its use of web-browser based interactive chemistry simulations and randomized questions.","PeriodicalId":158767,"journal":{"name":"EduRN: Other Social Sciences Education (Topic)","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125511560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"On Teaching Price Elasticity of Demand and Change in Revenue Due to Price Change - A Synthesis With and Without Calculus","authors":"Jong-Shin Wei","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.2366773","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.2366773","url":null,"abstract":"Price elasticity of demand measures how much, in terms of percentage change, the quantity demanded responds to a change in price. In this pedagogical note, first we intuitively introduce the very first notion of price elasticity, which is a directional measure because it describes the impact of an arbitrary change in price from one to another on the percentage change in quantity demanded. Next, we show how this measure becomes \"point\" price elasticity of demand when demand is linear. Finally, with help from calculus, we show how it leads to the development of (point) price elasticity of demand in general. At each stage, qualitative results concerning changes in total revenue and price are given and compared with what are in textbooks. A quantitative result regarding predicting the percentage change in total revenue from the price elasticity of demand and the percentage change in price is also given for the case of linear demand. By working progressively from the directional measure to the linear case followed by the general case, and from non-calculus approach to calculus approach, with precise definitions and 6 propositions, we intend to provide a unified framework for teaching the notion and applications of price elasticity in principles of economics as well as intermediate microeconomics. Flaws in textbooks are identified and resolved as well.","PeriodicalId":158767,"journal":{"name":"EduRN: Other Social Sciences Education (Topic)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133911181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
