The certificate consisted of four modules and 30 continuing education credits. Upon completion of the modules, registered nurses served as preceptors for nursing students that were enrolled in the Community Based Primary Care Program. The preceptors were able to mentor and educate students about the primary care setting and the different opportunities for nurses. Students were able to care for underserved populations, learn about local community resources to refer patients, and understand the barriers that patients encounter when it comes to managing their chronic illnesses and health prevention.","PeriodicalId":158343,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Primary Care","volume":"76 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139307760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lack of proper intervention to prevent CAUTI in the elderly and frail nursing-home residents leads to sepsis, hospitalization, and antimicrobial use, ultimately causing the colonization with multidrug- resistant organisms (MDROs). Furthermore, it inflates the costs. The project aims to systematically determine an approach to eliminate CAUTI in long-term care facilities. There, the establishment of antibiotic stewardship is at its infancy stage. The CAUTI project contributes significantly to the wide-reaching efforts to reduce the threats posed by antimicrobial-resistant organisms. The crucial element of an impactful strategy is the prevention by utilizing evidence-based bundle of care education and evidence-based urinary catheter protocols (UCP), both funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The CAUTI project’s outcome is measured using National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and the symptomatic definition of CAUTI provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to identify and count the cases in the unit; the team uses the NHSN’s data for benchmarking. The qualitative and quantitative methodology approaches utilized to implement a CAUTI prevention strategy at Burbank Healthcare Center and Rehabilitation. Thirty participants were selected out of 172 populations during the study for the CAUTI project. The findings indicate that 11 out of 30 participants developed CAUTI, of which three acquired it at the facility and eight at the community. Further, although female participants were fewer than males, females seem to develop a CAUTI with higher frequency than male participants.","PeriodicalId":158343,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Primary Care","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139308304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total hip arthroplasty (THA) is typically required (2.5% of persons between the ages of 40 and 84) as a result of worsening gait, rising pain, and stiffness. There have been many different surgical methods for the hip mentioned. The posterior and direct lateral approaches are currently the main THA techniques. The direct lateral method is said to have the advantage of allowing good acetabular exposure and simplifying cup alignment, which may lower hip dislocation rates. Additionally, it reduces the chance of damaging the sciatic nerve far from the surgical site. Materials and Methods: The prospective study on 25 patients with unilateral osteoarthritis, aged 25 to 60 years was carried out at Department of Orthopaedic surgery, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and different private hospital at Dhaka, Bangladesh from September 2020 to March 2023 where outcome of uncemented THR by Direct Lateral approach was recorded. Evaluation of the results was done the day before the procedure as well as one month, three months, six months, and twelve months thereafter. Aim: The main objective was to find out functional outcome of patients after total hip arthroplasty by direct lateral approach. Results: Total 25 Patients with unilateral osteoarthritis have undergone uncemented total hip arthroplasty by Lateral approach, n= 25; 12(48%) were female and 13 (52%) were male. The mean age of patients was 42.5 years range from 25-60 years. Right Side was predominantly affected in all cases. VAS, HHS and WOMAC scores significantly improved at the follow-up after THA by the LA (all p < 0.05). A VAS score preoperatively was 8.7 which was improved 2.5 at 12 months follow up with significant p value <0.001. Conclusion: Patients who had Total Hip Arthroplasty performed with the Lateral Approach reported significiant improvement in functional outcomes with less postoperative muscle damage, stiffness, and pain during daily activities.","PeriodicalId":158343,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Primary Care","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139306801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Quality improvement in T2DM care is heavily reliant on patient and provider behavior, and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to assess T2DM needs with a view of optimizing care. This was thus a qualitative study, which was part of a mixed method study design. It involved Focus Group Discussions (FGD), Key Informant Interviews (KII) and physical observation of care processes. Sample size was attained through the principal of saturation. Framework method was used for data analysis. The three qualitative approaches provided rich contextual data corroborated via triangulation. The study identified several needs: Knowledge, healthcare and socioeconomic needs amongst others. Simultaneously, it observed that despite much hype about factors that affect needs of T2DM, attitude is one single factor that subtly align environmental experience and knowledge to produce a particular behavior. Cognitive dissonance in attitude and how this relates to implicit and explicit attitude nuances needs assessment and consequently behavior. Paradoxical behaviors such as physical inactivity in impoverished populations that should be walking daily to work is explained by attitude. Improving knowledge and healthcare infrastructure does little to optimize care if attitude towards T2DM care is negative. Attitude is often measured in needs assessment, albeit with difficulties, but is overlooked and poorly understood when it comes to its enhancement since its impact is psychological. It is however pivotal and quintessential in translating education, culture, healthcare infrastructure and socioeconomic conditions into favorable T2DM behavior. Understanding the place of attitude and its quiddity in T2DM care spectrum provides a panoptic perspective for quality improvement.","PeriodicalId":158343,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Primary Care","volume":"28 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139308980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As part of this revision, CDC solicited nominations for an advisory “Opioid Workgroup” to report to the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. This paper offers a critical review of concerns identified in the final Workgroup report of July 2021, as contrasted against the revised and expanded guidelines published 16 months later in November 2022. The author finds that although the Workgroup was tasked to identify substantive issues, its input to the CDC was largely marginalized or ignored in the revised guidelines. The workgroup also failed to reach consensus on central issues of methodology, which should disqualify the CDC guidelines as a de factor standard of clinical practice. Arguably, the CDC should be removed from all further participation in development of public policy for the treatment of severe pain.","PeriodicalId":158343,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Primary Care","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139309153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This phenomenon is seen in the countries of India and China. Considering a stigma is developed within the society based on some beliefs upheld by the general population, it was in the best interest to investigate religions and philosophies that people in both China and India follow and uphold. This paper aims to answer the research question of “In what ways has religion and philosophy, specifically Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, affected stigma against mental illness and thus the available mental health care in India and China?”. Through research done on the four religions/philosophies, certain connections could be made. In India, Hinduism views mental illness as a result of a lack of faith and adherence to rituals. In Islam, mental illness is also believed to be due to a lack of faith. Such negative views of mental health could be contributing to the large treatment gap in India. In China, Confucianism seems to be the reason why a mental illness stigma exists. Confucianism emphasizes adherence to societal views, even if that means suppressing emotion. This causes people to look down upon mental illness and justifies people staying away from those with mental illnesses rather than helping them. On the other hand, Buddhism, the majority religion/philosophy in China, seeks to reduce mental health stigma. Buddhist beliefs could be the cause of the increase in demand for mental health care. The connections made are beneficial to understanding the root of mental health stigma and can be used in the future to combat the stigma and start increasing awareness and available mental health care.","PeriodicalId":158343,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Primary Care","volume":"101 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139347122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With this, the world had to adapt to a new way of carrying out permanent health education. The objective was to map what the national and international literature currently has to say about how continuing education is being provided to health professionals in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: This is a scoping review, thus, the PRISMA-ScR guidelines were used for its elaboration. The search was performed in several stages, by four independent reviewers, following the criteria of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), in the following databases: PubMed, Science Direct, LILACS and MEDLINE (via BVS). The descriptors used were \"Continuing Education\", \"health\" and \"COVID-19\". Results: Ten articles dealing with the proposed theme were included and analyzed in this review. The year of publication ranged from 2020 to 2021. Six articles were conducted in Brazil, one in Poland, one in China and one in Canada. Five of them were in Portuguese and five in English. Nine studies are descriptive experience reports and one theoretical-descriptive study of actions performed to promote HPS. The most prevalent research site was the Brazilian Basic Health Units (BHU), but it also occurred in tertiary hospitals. It was possible to identify several measures for continuing education in Brazil and worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: The strategies employed were effective and produced a positive impact on the communities employed. We encourage actions like those presented to be carried out within health services, within the reality and singularity of each place, in order to provide updates and continuity of education in health.","PeriodicalId":158343,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Primary Care","volume":"182 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139347776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Caring for incarcerated patients is problematic, given the limitations on access to healthcare services within detention facilities. A case report of a patient with psychomotor agitation and psychoactive substances use, prone to hetero and self-aggression, is presented. The patient was treated for a month in a Mexican state detention center by nursing students, under supervision and pedagogical support. Using the nursing process, focused on psychosocial health needs, six priority diagnoses were identified: anxiety, ineffective health maintenance behaviors, acute confusion, risk of self-directed violence and violence directed at others, as well as discomfort. Based on these diagnoses, care plans using cognitive stimulation was carried out with the goals of decreased anxiety, increased self-care, increased self-responsibility, better anger control, management of hallucination. The cognitive stimulation was a primary intervention that helped with other interventions to achieve holistic goals, such as improving hygiene. Improvements in the patient’s general ability to function led to, among other aspects, the release of solitary confinement and adaptation to social environment of the prison. Patient improvements reflect the importance of professional nursing care in mental health care in correctional healthcare.","PeriodicalId":158343,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Primary Care","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139347220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These staggering numbers make it essential for future nurses to understand the disease process and treatment regimes. Methods: The study is a mixed method design using quantitative data from 5 post simulation questions utilizing the Likert scale and 1 open ended question. Results: The majority of students answered between a 4-5 on the Likert scale indicating they felt very comfortable/ confident to somewhat comfortable/confident on all 5 questions. The student takeaways from the simulation experience were positive indicating they learned the importance of listening to the patient and family, the importance of medication, adhering to the medication schedule, and communication with the physician. Conclusions: Using an interprofessional simulation experience that focused on the medication schedule of a patient with Parkinson’s to help student learn patient advocacy has proven effective. A well planned out simulation scenario created a space where educator could focus on soft skills, like communication, collaboration, and advocacy.","PeriodicalId":158343,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Primary Care","volume":"111 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139347626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Postpartum depression can develop during pregnancy, or after giving birth to up to one year. Postpartum depression can be a challenge for the mom involved and often it is misdiagnosed. Postpartum depression can be a bigger challenge if the mom is single or has other factors such as lacking a support system. A review of nursing and health related literature was conducted to explore postpartum depression. The three themes that emerged from the literature are: risks, interventions, and screening. Findings from the initial literature review reveal that a lack of knowledge exists in nursing and patient care practice regarding postpartum depression. The purpose of this rapid review was to promote understanding of factors influencing postpartum.","PeriodicalId":158343,"journal":{"name":"Nursing & Primary Care","volume":"50 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139347824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
