Iraq has a high prevalence of smoking, predominantly with traditional cigarettes, but there is also growing popularity of electronic cigarettes and waterpipes among younger and middle-aged adults. This study aims to explore the perceptions and usage of traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and waterpipes among this population in Iraq. A descriptive study was conducted among 402 young and middle-aged adults (50.25% females), aged between 18 and 45 years, with a mean age of 25.88 (SD = 7.27). For the data collection, an online questionnaire was developed utilizing distribution channels on common social networking platforms. The results showed that 41.79% of respondents have used traditional cigarettes, while 31.1% of participants reported that they use electronic cigarettes. Ninety-four per cent of respondents acknowledged that they use waterpipes. The results also indicated that a significant proportion believe that using electronic cigarettes is either much more harmful or more harmful than traditional cigarettes. Participants commonly perceived all three types of tobacco products as highly harmful, including secondhand smoke, addictive qualities, and popularity among peers. Additionally, significant differences in perceptions emerged between smokers and nonsmokers regarding electronic cigarettes and traditional cigarettes, although no such differences were observed for waterpipes. These findings contribute to understanding the attitudes toward different forms of tobacco use among respondents, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to address the perceived harm associated with tobacco products.
","PeriodicalId":15812,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse","volume":" ","pages":"478-489"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2026-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141468463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This cross-sectional study investigates the mediating roles of self-compassion and subjective well-being in the relationship between psychological flexibility and substance misuse among Turkish college students. The study included 445 emerging adults enrolled at a state university in Türkiye. University participants were recruited via convenience sampling using snowball methods. Data were collected using self-report scales. The sample was 69% female (n = 307) and 31% male (n = 138) and ranged in age from 18 to 26 years (M = 20.85, SD = 1.35). In the study, Pearson product-moment correlation analysis was conducted to examine the relationships between the variables and then the serial mediation model was tested. The findings have revealed that psychological flexibility significantly predicts substance misuse, subjective well-being, and self-compassion. Additionally, the study identifies self-compassion as a mediator in the relationship between psychological flexibility and subjective well-being. While self-compassion contributes significantly to well-being, it does not explain the impact of psychological flexibility on substance misuse. Furthermore, subjective well-being also appears to be a mediator in the relationship between psychological flexibility and substance misuse, emphasizing its potential significance in reducing the likelihood of resorting substance misuse. Traditional interventions face significant challenges, such as low perceived need for treatment, concerns about stigma, and limited resources for face-to-face delivery to large student populations. Digitalization offers a highly scalable and discreet alternative to overcome these barriers. This systematic review synthesizes evidence regarding the effectiveness and design of Technology-Based Interventions (TBIs) targeting substance use among TVET students. Overall, TBIs demonstrate effectiveness in reducing substance use and related consequences in emerging adults/college students. Digital programs developed for vocational students, such as \"Meine Zeit ohne,\" have shown small but significant effects in reducing overall adverse health behaviors and problematic Internet use. The critical role of digitalization is realized through the systematic integration of behavioral science frameworks, such as the Behavior Change Wheel (BCW) and User-Centered Design (UCD), to deliver targeted interventions such as Personalized Normative Feedback (PNF) and training in mindful decision making. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups, experimental and control, with each group consisting of 8 couples. The results indicated the effectiveness of the mindfulness program in enhancing marital adjustment, with the posttest mean rising to (2.86), and the average impulsivity score decreased to 2.59, indicating a significant reduction in impulsivity among Iranian couples. Mindfulness-based therapy directly affects participants' ability to regulate immediate emotions. This increased awareness significantly helps in managing harmful mental behaviors such as impulsivity, substance abuse, and poor adaptability. Results indicated that dual use was associated with poorer physical health status, greater levels of somatic symptoms, and a higher number of total medical conditions compared to exclusive combustible cigarette use. We estimated 12-month type-specific PD (gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation) prevalence, and multiple discrimination (2+ PD types) prevalence. We estimated associations between intersecting marginalized identities (2+ marginalized identities), multiple discrimination, depressive symptoms, and 30-day cannabis use, controlling for education and employment status, age, and year. Overall, 40.2% respondents reported a single marginalized identity; 35.6% reported intersecting marginalized identities. Those with intersecting marginalized identities were more likely to report multiple discrimination. Intersecting marginalized identities and multiple discrimination were associated with higher depressive symptoms; multiple discrimination (but not intersecting marginalized identities) was associated with higher odds of 30-day cannabis use before and after controlling for depressive symptoms. Multiple discrimination and 30-day cannabis use associations were stronger among those identifying as non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic Asian American or Pacific Islander versus non-Hispanic White. Hierarchical regression analysis was employed to investigate the association of perceived stress, problematic internet use, and prosocial behavior with substance misuse, while controlling for sociodemographic variables (e.g., age, gender, and socioeconomic status). The findings first showed that perceived stress was modestly and positively associated with substance misuse, indicating that young adults with higher stress levels were more likely to misuse substances. Additionally, problematic internet use had a stronger association with substance misuse than stress and other variables. Lastly, prosocial behavior significantly accounted for additional variance in substance misuse, even after controlling for stress, internet use, and demographic variables. Overall, the results of the study suggest that people experiencing high stress and excessive internet use are more likely to use maladaptive coping strategies, including substance misuse. Using a descriptive-correlational design, the target population included all women referred between 2023 and 2025. To minimize issues of missing or invalid responses, 231 women with reported communication difficulties and elevated risk of infidelity were recruited through voluntary sampling. Data were gathered using scales measuring attitudes toward infidelity, schema modes, and emotional divorce. Pearson correlations and stepwise multiple regression were applied for analysis. Findings indicated that the predictors collectively accounted for 33% of the variance in infidelity (R2 = .33, p < .001). Specifically, reduced Healthy Adult functioning (15%) and elevated High-Demanding Parent (11%), Punitive Parent (3%), Impulsive Child (2%), and Emotional Divorce (2%) each contributed uniquely to prediction, with the overall model reaching statistical significance (p < .001).
