We analyse the different threshold levels from which caching content starts to be beneficial based on two metrics, and take into consideration the used storage technologies and the location of the CCN router. Based on the presented analytical results we address practical issues regarding the possible deployment of CCN routers from an energy efficiency and performance trade-off point of view. This work lays down the foundation for the development of a model to design practical caching strategies in CCN taking into account the energy efficiency of different approaches.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116747703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since their power profile only depends to a small fraction on the actual traffic load, putting some base stations in sleep mode has been identified as a solution to scale the network power consumption with the actual load. This paper presents a new system architecture based on the paradigm of “cell on-demand”, which is currently studied in the Beyond Cellular Green Generation (BCG2) project of the GreenTouch consortium. We first outline the key characteristics of the new system architecture, then, we present a framework for position information processing in order to predict the channel quality between a user and a set of switched-off base stations that can potentially be activated by the system to serve the user. Experimental evaluation on a small scale testbed shows the viability of the proposed framework by achieving estimation errors of 20%.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129148094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Smart Grid principle, allowing to efficiently manage an electrical grid network, needs to exploit a communication network for interconnecting the Smart Grid devices. An increasing interest is toward wireless communications due to their higher flexibility. Within this context Cognitive Radio (CR) techniques has been introduced aiming to exploit more efficiently the radio spectrum resources; to this aim CR based Smart Grids will be reviewed as a possible solution for implementing an effective Smart Grid Network. As their small size limits their energy capacity, an intelligent and energy-saving use of resources is crucial for the mobile user experience. Especially energy saving while sending and receiving data becomes important due to the always-on nature of smartphones. One solution for a sophisticated resource usage in wireless access networks is to tailor resource management to applications. The advantage of such mechanisms is to be able to address both the perceived quality of the users and the energy consumption of mobile devices at the same time. We propose several traffic scheduling algorithms for HTTP file download in wireless networks based on this application-aware paradigm. The core idea is to use download scheduling that avoids parallel transmissions and, in contrast, favors sequential transmission.We have implemented and measured the algorithms in a wireless mesh network. The evaluation results quantify the gain of an application-aware resource management with respect to quality of experience and energy consumption.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"274 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124424909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In mobile communication networks, the major part of the energy consumption incurs in the radio access network. In this paper we present a numerical method which finds the maximum subset of detachable ceils for a given base station topology. Additionally our algorithm calculates the antenna downtilt settings for the remaining cells to guarantee full network coverage. The growth of the mobile communications market which is boosted by the increasing penetration of smartphones and laptops requires an increase of the network capacity and, consequently, a great leap forward also for the infrastructures. In this scenario, in order to reduce the operative expenditures, the network operators pay attention to energy saving strategies that may also contribute to the reduction of greenhouse emissions. In this paper the exponential smoothing technique is applied to forecast traffic in a given area considering daily and weekly variations. The availability of a reliable prediction of the future traffic values allows the adaptation of macro base station transmission power and the introduction of a sleep mode for micro base stations and permits to guarantee the requested network capacity while saving energy consumption. Results show the effectiveness of traffic forecast technique for capacity prediction and the usefulness of the proposed algorithms for energy efficiency maximization, affording very good performance, very close to the optimum one.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127944707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
