We compare different next-generation passive optical networks (NG-PONs) to a baseline GPON deployment offering similar bandwidths and Quality of Service (QoS) for best-effort high speed connectivity services. For the operator side, we follow two approaches: first, we consider a fixed split ratio (1:64) in an existing optical distribution network (ODN); next, we consider an upgraded ODN with an optimized split ratio for specific bandwidth and QoS values. For medium bandwidth demands, our results show that legacy PONs can be upgraded to XG-PON without any ODN modification. For future applications that may require access rates up to 1 Gb/s, NG-PON2 technologies with higher split ratios and increased reach become more interesting systems, offering the potential for both increased energy efficiency and node consolidation. For the user side, we consider power consumption of the optical network unit (ONU), installed at the customer premises, incorporating several energy saving mechanisms. Combining our results for the central office and ONU side, we see that XLG-PON (using a bit-interleaving protocol) and TWDM-PON (using a standard protocol) consume the lowest power per user among the different NG-PON2 technology candidates.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127139580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If emerging optimization are to be formulated exactly, they are intractable. This is why numerous heuristics for approximate solutions are proposed. They differ in assumptions on the routing scheme in the network, and also on the availability (and usefulness) of traffic-related or measurement-based power consumption data. Those most interesting w.r.t. authors' work are presented and classified. The authors propose a number of strategies for switching the links on or off, which are still worthy consideration - while the routing scheme stays in control of some shortest-distance mechanism, like OSPF. Operation of the algorithms is verified for two standard test cases, resulting in proposed further improvements and hints on implementation details.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"190 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122529593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we evaluate a on-off approach devised to provide intermittent (but synchronized) WiFi communication across opportunistically connected devices while saving energy. Differently form classical duty cycle approaches that are implemented at the protocol/network level, we devise a “human time-scale” duty cycle that can be implemented as an overlay system service at the application level. The relatively large time-scale allows to simply keep a loose synchronization between terminals, without requiring any changes in the default operating system or system internals of commercial mobile phones.With reference to Android devices, we analyze the effects of varying such duty cycle in terms of the feasibility of the synchronization requirements as well as the energy gain obtained in order to find the trade-off for the different state settings. For these values, we evaluate the loss of discovered contacts using the data coming from real human mobility traces.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126232023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The nodes on the path are able to accumulate mutual information from the transmissions of the previous nodes on the path. We first consider the case of nodes with unlimited energy and propose an algorithm that outperforms a method proposed in the recent literature. We then consider the case with limited-energy nodes. We prove by counter examples that some properties that hold in the unlimited energy case, do not hold anymore in the limited energy case. Next we describe a suboptimal algorithm and compare its performance with the optimal solution.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131567413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such strategies are generally founded on two main kinds of power management capabilities provided by the hardware level, namely, Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) and Clock Gating (CG). Our main objective is to trade off power consumption and forwarding performance by acting on the power-delay product. To this purpose, we provide an optimization framework and a speed scaling policy for energy-aware packet forwarding engines. As shown by the results, our speed scaling policy allows saving about 18% of the power consumed by an entire network device without compromising performance during peak hours.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"589 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127225658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our analysis shows that, depending on whether the receiver or the sender is used to mitigate for errors, the power level will influence the energy consumption per bit via both the power and the effective transmission time, since transmission power is a source of interference and hence of errors. The analysis is carried out for receiver controlled retransmission requests when errors are sensed, and also for a scheme where the sender uses carrier sensing to infer the likelihood of a transmission error. The issue is also discussed for wired digital system where crosstalk is the source of interference.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124158112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reason is that certain network access patterns of popular smart-phone applications trigger frequent connection re-establishments, which are signaled to the network via the radio resource control (RRC) protocol. As a consequence of the network agnostic implementation of smart-phone applications, entities of the mobile network operator may experience overload, while energy consumption at the smart-phones is mutually determined. The aim of this work is to study the impact of traffic characteristics on the power consumption of the smart-phone and the signaling messages in the mobile network. For that purpose, we first develop a simple model for the RRC states of a smart-phone. Second, we estimate the resulting power drain and the signalling traffic of the smart-phone. Then, we investigate the applicability of our model by comparing analytical with simulation results for real-world smart-phone traffic measurements. Finally, we evaluate the effect of network parameter optimization on traffic with different statistical characteristics. Our counter-intuitive results show that in particular bursty traffic patterns are suitable for UMTS networks while periodic patterns may cause increased power consumption and signaling overload - in contrast to classical queueing systems.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128627111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, optimizing their energy consumption could lead to major benefits both from the environmental and economical viewpoints. In this perspective, this paper defines a general OSN model based on homogenous aggregates of machineries concurring for a common goal, defined as worker. Such template is then used to develop a non-linear controller to increase the power efficiency of the OSN by adjusting the frequencies of each worker, according to user-generated load of requests. Simulations are provided to show the effectiveness of the approach.","PeriodicalId":158112,"journal":{"name":"2013 24th Tyrrhenian International Workshop on Digital Communications - Green ICT (TIWDC)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121442675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
