The purpose of this study was to (1) use an air pollution dispersal screening model and wind direction to characterize the air emissions from UNGD facilities at each residence and (2) assess association of this exposure estimate with respiratory symptoms. Respiratory symptoms were abstracted from health records of a convenience sample of 104 adults from one county in southwestern PA who had completed a standard clinical interview with a nurse practitioner. Using publicly available air emission data, we applied a “box” air pollution dispersion screening model to estimate the median ambient air level of CO, NOx, PM 2.5, VOCs, and formaldehyde at the residence during the year health symptoms were reported. Sources and median emissions were categorized as north, south, east, or west of the residence to account for the effect of wind direction on dispersion. Binary logistic regression was performed for each respiratory symptom. Number of sources had varying magnitudes of association with some symptoms (i.e., cough, shortness of breath, and “any respiratory symptom”) and no association with others (i.e., sore throat, sinus problems, wheezing). Air emissions were not associated with any symptom.","PeriodicalId":15733,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A","volume":"20 1","pages":"1357 - 1363"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83925109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concentrations for the various tests were selected after preliminary experiments, to present impact and be close to the environmentally relevant. The results revealed impacts of the antibiotic on microbial biomass C and NO3− production at the concentration level of 7.2 mg/kg soil dry weight (d.w.), but these parameters recovered to normal values since the antibiotic was applied once as a pulse. Moreover, the drug had negative effects on earthworm juveniles’ total number at the concentration level of 30 mg/kg soil d.w. In addition, the toxicity tests on plant seedling growth revealed negative effects of the antibiotic for tomato at the concentration level of 45.44 mg/kg soil d.w. However, DOX showed positive effects for corn seedling growth, showing that the results of such experiments are valuable for sustainable animal wastes management. Non-significant effects were observed for seedling growth of pea, pumpkin and bean plants. The results of the study are valuable for the impact assessment of the antibiotic in the terrestrial environment and the management of contaminated animal waste.","PeriodicalId":15733,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A","volume":"146 1","pages":"1441 - 1447"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89706912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effects of various H2 and CO2 ratios on microbial community were investigated. The HYBRID gas fermentation reactor was composed of granular anaerobic seed and the system fed with only H2 and CO2 gases. No additional organic material and trace element was fed during the throughout the experiments; thus, the microbial diversity was directly related to production of methane. The dynamics of the microbial communities were investigated with DGGE and real-time PCR analysis. The results showed that Methanobacteriales members were more dominated than Methanosarcinales and Methanomicrobiales members in the system. DGGE results indicated that Methanosaeta concilii, Methanoculleus sp., Methanosphaerula palustris, Methanofollis formosanus, Methanolinea sp., and Methanobacterium palustre were the most prominent methanogens depending on different H2/CO2 ratios. DGGE profiles suggested that hydrogenotrophic and acetoclastic species were responsible for the production of methane. The survival of syntrophic bacteria and acetoclastic methanogens was attributed to their utilization of organic materials provided by lysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first microbial profile detection study in a hybrid bioreactor system operated with only pure hydrogen and carbon dioxide.","PeriodicalId":15733,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A","volume":"20 1","pages":"1348 - 1355"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79749584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to analyze the sources of heavy metals in mixed municipal waste, including from recently introduced products, and to identify their composition and leaching properties in various fractions. The author has measured the concentration of four heavy metals (lead, cadmium, nickel, and chromium) in various fractions sampled from an operational municipal waste facility in the town of Pirna (Saxony, Germany). Batteries and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) were found to be the main sources of heavy metals in municipal waste, while a relatively high metals’ content was also detected in the rubber fraction. To assess leaching behavior, landfill simulation reactors were used to simulate conditions over several decades. The metals’ weight in the input and output waste was compared. The lowest leaching rate was found for lead, while the highest was found for cadmium and chromium. In addition, it was confirmed that the degree of leaching depended on the humidity and organic matter in the landfill: the higher the moisture and organic matter, the more heavy metals are leached from the waste.","PeriodicalId":15733,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A","volume":"9 1","pages":"1448 - 1456"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79079118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Samples were collected over multiple years in Pleasant Grove Creek (PGC – 8 years), Kirker Creek (KC – 2 years), Arcade Creek (ARC – 3 years), Salinas streams (SAL – 3 years) and the lower Santa Maria River watershed (SM – 3 years). In each watershed, metrics indicative of physical habitat quality and the relative health of benthic communities were collected, along with measurements of various potential toxicants in sediment (metals and pyrethroids), total organic carbon (TOC) and sediment grain size characteristics. For all waterbodies, pyrethroids have been reported at concentrations suspected to be toxic based on single-species laboratory toxicity tests. The data from all of these studies were assembled into a single data base which was analyzed by a series of univariate and multivariate statistical analyses. These analyses were designed to examine overall relationships between benthic community health and environmental quality conditions across the watersheds, as well as to address the following two key questions: (1) Which benthic metrics (response indicators) were the most important to relationships with environmental quality conditions and how do these metrics rank from most to least important? and (2) Which environmental variables (stressors) were the most important in terms of relationships to benthic metrics indicative of community health and how do the stressors rank from most to least important? Consensus ranking of 14 benthic metrics showed that stress tolerant (% Tolerant taxa, Tolerance value and Collectors/gatherers) and stress sensitive (EPT taxa and taxa richness) were the most important. The consensus ranking of 38 environmental variables from most to least important showed that habitat metrics, metals and grain size characteristics were most important for shaping benthic communities while pyrethroids were not reported to be an important stressor across the geographic scope of the watersheds.","PeriodicalId":15733,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A","volume":"4 1","pages":"1364 - 1386"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83260086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, a combined system, which consisted of an absorption column and an electrochemical oxidation reactor, was tested to simultaneously remove these impurities. The effects of the current density and the chemical loading rate on the system performance were investigated. Firstly, the mass transfer coefficients for the absorption column were determined at various gas flow rates. More mass of NH3 was transferred, compared with that of H2S, because of its higher solubility. In the electro-oxidation reactor, reactive chlorine species (RCSs) were generated and oxidized both H2S and NH3; however, NH3 started to degrade only after H2S was completely eliminated. At a current density of 400 A/m2, the current efficiencies of H2S and NH3 were 23.1% and 5.9%, respectively. In the combined system, the removal efficiency of H2S was closely related to the mass ratio of the H2S transferred and the RCSs generated. The removal efficiency of H2S was greater than 99% when the ratio was less than 1. The mass transfer potential and the oxidation kinetics should be balanced to improve the system performance for the simultaneous removal of H2S and NH3.","PeriodicalId":15733,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A","volume":"29 1","pages":"1430 - 1440"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82674699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A comparative analysis of the environmental status showed that all pollutants studied such as γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH), 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (4,4′-DDT), and p-p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (4,4′-DDE) were identified in Ararat marz with the average concentrations and detection rates higher than in Lori marz. The prominent contaminant was γ-HCH. The findings indicated the concentrations of OCPs below of regulatory concern. In Ararat marz an increase in the number of sterile pollen grains of certain wild plants was revealed (14.8–26.0%), compared with Lori marz with the levels within the contingent standard of 5–11%. The phytotoxic activity of soil samples from the Ararat marz studied on Avena sativa seedlings was significantly higher in the summer-fall period. These data correlated with monitoring findings showed an increase in the levels of γ-HCH, 4,4′-DDT, SS in the soil and sludge sampled in summer-fall in Ararat marz. This difference in the environmental status can be considered as the result of active agriculture in Ararat marz, whose share of contribution to a relevant branch of the economy of Armenia is two times higher than in Lori marz, 15.4% and 7.9%, respectively. Mentioned rates of agricultural production may be one of the reasons for the environmental deterioration in Ararat marz. The detection of 4,4-DDT, γ-HCH residues testifies the circulation of these formulations in the environment indicating their use in recent past and confirming their persistence. Although since the 70s of the last century the application of OCPs in the Republic of Armenia has been prohibited. The current situation may be explained by low awareness of farmers on different issues related to the safe management of pesticides. To ensure safe working conditions and raise awareness among the farmers we have developed “Recommendations on Safety requirements when working with pesticides” that are approved by the State Service for Food Safety at the Ministry of Agriculture of RA and included in the reference booklets for farmers as guiding information. Our study shows the understanding of associations between the deterioration of the environmental status and share of agriculture contribution to the economy that provides the evidence for future research programs.","PeriodicalId":15733,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A","volume":"74 1","pages":"1011 - 1018"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79165647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four identical pilot-scale horizontal sub-surface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF-CWs) were installed, out of which three beds were planted with a common macrophyte, whereas one was kept as a control. The distinction in the hydraulic design was baffles, vertical up-down (CW2) and side slits (CW3), and the third bed (CW1) was kept horizontal plain type (without baffles). The filter media used in all the beds was dual type, coarse and fine gravel. Monitoring was carried out to determine BOD5, COD, TSS, NH4+-N, TN, and TP concentrations at different sampling points. Results show that the baffled beds performed better compared to the non-baffled in the order of CW2 > CW3 > CW1 > Control. The highest removal efficiency was measured in the CW2 with a reduction in BOD5 (86%), COD (77%), TSS (80%), NH4+-N (59%), TN (66%), and TP (64%). The statistical method used also showed that the flow pattern has an impact on the treatment performances of the CWs.","PeriodicalId":15733,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A","volume":"12 1","pages":"1245 - 1253"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84964295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fast uptake was observed during the initial phase of the process, which reached equilibrium at 240 min following Elovich model. The diffusion kinetic model exhibited that the rate-limiting step of adsorption was controlled by film diffusion as well as intraparticle diffusion. The isotherm modeling revealed the applicability of the Freundlich equation with the Kf values as 8.19–13.99 (mg g−1)(L mg−1)1/n at 283–323 K showing the increasing trend of adsorption capacity, which was further confirmed by the positive value of ΔH0 (9.49 kJ mol−1) demonstrating the endothermic nature of the adsorption process. The spontaneous nature of the adsorption reaction was established by the negative values of ΔG0. Application of the calcined Mg–Fe–LDH adsorbent for the removal of arsenic from real arsenic contaminated groundwater was also successfully performed. The effect of process parameters of the adsorption system was modeled by an artificial neural network (ANN) for adsorption capacity and removal efficiency. The optimized model exhibited high R2, F-value and low values of error functions, establishing the significant applicability of the ANN model.","PeriodicalId":15733,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A","volume":"8 1","pages":"1318 - 1336"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89599369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
