A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between pesticide exposure and respiratory health among 43 mosquito control workers in two vector control units in Kelantan by using purposive sampling. Pesticide risk assessment was based on the Chemical Health Risk Assessment (CHRA). A British Medical Research Questionnaire (BMRC) was used to assess respiratory symptoms and lung function was measured using a spirometer. The cumulative pesticide exposure of the individuals was calculated by taking the average number of fogging sessions per month. The risk level for all pesticides was moderate, except for Actellic 50EC. The most common respiratory symptoms were dyspnea (25.6%), cough (18.6%), phlegm (18.6%), and chest tightness (14.0%). Lung function was normal in 30%, restrictive in 45%, and obstructive in 25%. None of the reported respiratory symptoms and lung function values were associated with cumulative pesticide exposure (p>0.05). Past respiratory illness had a significant relationship with chest tightness (Adj OR=0.009, 95%CI: < 0.001 – 0.834). Age had a significant relationship with phlegm (Adj OR=1.259, 95% CI: 1.010 – 1.569). In conclusion, cumulative pesticide exposure did not relate to respiratory effects. However, mosquito control workers should be given proper training on pesticide handling and the effective usage of PPE to reduce occupational pesticide exposure.","PeriodicalId":15706,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Energy and Safety Technology (JEST)","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80234019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the literature, most of the researchers agreed that DESs is one of the attractive solutions to environmentally friendly chemicals due to its classification as a green solvent and safe to use due to its low flammability characteristic. Although studies on the benefits and advantageous implementation of DESs are extensive, investigation on the safety level of DESs is still lacking. This paper aims to introduce a simple qualitative inherent safety assessment method for flammability evaluation of DESs. Flash point values of the HBA and HBD component of DES are used in evaluating the flammability level of the DES. Subjective score assignment was utilized based on the flash point data as well as mixing temperature in the production of DES. In this scoring method, higher score represents higher flammability hazard. The resulted scoring method has five level of hazards representing five range of flash point values with 5 indicates the highest and most hazardous score while 1 is the lowest and the least hazardous score. Implementation on a simple case study shows that this scoring method is easy to use and can be easily improved for future usage as more safety information on DES emerge.","PeriodicalId":15706,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Energy and Safety Technology (JEST)","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84164811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was conducted among 108 manufacturing workers and aimed to determine employees' perceptions of safety culture in the manufacturing industry. The data obtained were analysed to see the relationship between sociodemographic factors and safety culture dimensions to safety performance. The four aspects of perception include four dimensions of management commitment, employee engagement, communication, and training and education. Demographic factors such as age and duration of work were not significantly related to variables related to staff perceptions (p > 0.05). In addition, the relationship between aspects of security culture dimensions and safety performance showed that there was a significant relationship between communication having the highest relationship (r = 0.403, P < 0.01) and the lowest relationship by management commitment dimension (r = 0.244, p < 0.01). The overall a grand total of these studies show a significant positive relationship with workers’ safety in the workplace (r = 0.377, p < 0.01). Therefore, companies are encouraged to increase training programs in the workplace to raise awareness of workplace hazard awareness as well as ongoing health and safety programs through helpful channels for employees to reduce workplace accidents.","PeriodicalId":15706,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Energy and Safety Technology (JEST)","volume":"11 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84697588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For freestanding renewable energy-based minigrid, a three-source stand-alone minigrid is in this study examined for system security under large disturbances. By real-time simulation, rotor responses of the generators and voltage characteristics of the buses are assessed at sudden load change and under fault condition. Post-perturbation behaviour of the system shows synchronism is not compromised by any of the generators and the bus voltage profiles remains within their pre-perturbation statutory limits. This implies that a number of rotating machine-based energy mini-sources could be interconnected into a freestanding minigrid without compromising the stability of the system. The assessment could find use in predictive and corrective compensation for stability issues in mini integrated power systems and serve as simple generic investigative approach that could be integrated into Minigrids Remedial Action Scheme or Minigrids Energy Management System for dynamic security assessment of multi-machine island minigrids.","PeriodicalId":15706,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Energy and Safety Technology (JEST)","volume":"43 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79320903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it has health and safety challenges like any other chemical process. Most attention focuses on this fuel production's technology and economic potential with some work related to its safety impact. This study conducts an occupational health hazard assessment on two hydrogen synthesis routes at the design research and development stage. This study compares the outcomes to find the healthiest Hydrogen production route. This research leveraged the Inherent Occupational Health Index (IOHI) as the assessment to measure the health challenges peculiar to each production route. Three different index calculation types additive, average, and worst case are used to achieve the comparison. The information used in the evaluation is available at the R&D design stage. The study shows that both synthesis routes assessed steam methane reforming and coal gasification fall under the hazardous category of the IOHI index standard. But steam methane reforming has a lower IOHI index standard value of 16 than coal gasification 17.7. Therefore, although both synthesis routes are hazardous and pose occupational health risks to workers, steam methane reforming is a better alternative for hydrogen production from a health perspective.","PeriodicalId":15706,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Energy and Safety Technology (JEST)","volume":"166 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78012571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, ineffective maintenance may have a negative effect on performance. The consequence of ineffective maintenance can shorten the life of equipment or plant, can be harmful to workers who perform the maintenance tasks, and lead to accidents or incidents. Ineffective maintenance occurs as a result of many reasons, such as but not limited to human factors like complexity of maintenance task, poorly written maintenance procedure, fatigue and Organizational Factors such as poor experience, lack of training, lack of safety systems and barriers, and Poor health and safety culture. The aim of this study is to identify common human performance factors associated with maintenance and identify its influence on human error in aging oil and gas plants in the United Aarab Emirates. Five case studies are presented to identify human factors contributed to the accident during maintenance activities and to identify its linkage with human error, then survey strategy is used for data collection and a structured questionnaire is designed and distributed among people who involved in maintenance activities in UAE. The research concludes that understanding work procedures is influenced by the maintenance experience of the workers and communication between workers and management and safety culture has an influence on human error.","PeriodicalId":15706,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Energy and Safety Technology (JEST)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85525871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Malaysia through the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) developed chemical related legislations under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994 upon tripartite and stakeholder consultation. Effective law enforcement by DOSH is important to ensure compliance to occupational health legislations in order to meet the objectives of OSHA 1994. This paper presents the status of chemical management compliance in Malaysia pertaining to compliance to the Occupational Safety and Health (Use and Standards of Exposure of Chemicals Hazardous to Health) (USECHH) Regulations 2000 among the industries in various economic sectors twenty years after its inception. This paper proposes four steps for investigating the compliance status. The four steps are overview of chemical legislations, enforcement strategies, data analysis and recommendations. There was a total of 9712 workplaces inspected by DOSH officers during the enforcement activities. About 54% workplaces received satisfactory grades while 46% were non satisfactory. USECHH operations for the last five years (2016-2020) revealed that 70% of the total workplaces inspected received satisfactory compliance while another 30% potrayed otherwise. These positive results show significant improvement in the status of compliance of chemical management as compared to the beginning of its introduction in year 2000 where majority of the grades are unsatisfactory. Analysis of each elements found that the worst compliance comes from elements such as medical surveillance, health surveillance, exposure monitoring and chemical health risk assessment The research also prescribes strategies and methods taken by DOSH Malaysia in ensuring chemical management compliance at the workplace. This paper shows an insight of chemical management in Malaysia briefly and provides suggestions and recommendations, measures and outcomes of enforcement. Future measures to be taken by DOSH is also suggested to boost compliance.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":15706,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Energy and Safety Technology (JEST)","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74210180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to standardized the milk to produced the best quality of yogurt. The dielectric properties of goat’s milk with known chemical content were of measured from 201 to 4500 MHz at room temperature using a network analyzer and an open-ended coaxial line probe which then used in creating empirical model. Three samples of commercialize goat’s milk which available in local market were studied for the purpose in creating this empirical formula. Chemical content of four raw goat’s milks samples were then determined using the data of dielectric properties and empirical formula which was created before. The result show that the raw goat’s milk consist of 4.99 to 8.08 wt% of fat content, 4.82 to 6.31 wt% of protein content and 7.12 to 9.15 wt% of carbohydrate content. Twenty standard chemical composition of commercialize plain goat yogurt were used in study and being used to compared with the chemical content of the raw goat’s milk sample. The MCO imposed the closure of most sectors and premises except for essential sectors and services, including petrol pump stations as listed by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs of Malaysia under strict standard operating procedures (SOPs). The transmission of COVID-19 at petrol pump stations is one of the biggest concerns due to the high traffic and frequent visits by many individuals. The existing COVID-19 preventive measures at petrol pump stations were compared with safe work procedures for the prevention of COVID-19 in the workplace from the literature review from various sources. The results conclude that workers at Station A have better safe practices on COVID-19 preventive measures compared to those at Station B with a higher percentage of safe practices for most of the questions listed. The analysed data collected through the observations were used as input to evaluate the practicality of existing COVID-19 preventive measures at petrol pump stations among workers and customers based on the frequency of safe and unsafe practices conducted. The activities with a high frequency of unsafe practices were used as input to propose a framework of COVID-19 preventive measures specifically for petrol pump stations in Malaysia to increase the practicality of such measures.","PeriodicalId":15706,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Energy and Safety Technology (JEST)","volume":"9 11 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73357397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
