The electric energy provided by a photovoltaic module depends greatly on the amount of irradiance that reaches its photovoltaic cells. However, the efficiency of these cells can also be affected by external factors such as wind speed, ambient temperature, relative humidity, shading and dust deposition. The deposition of dust on the surface of a photovoltaic module attenuates the incident solar irradiance leading to a decrease in the generated energy. In this context, this paper provides a review of previous and current studies on the impact of dust deposition on the performance of photovoltaic systems. In addition, it investigates whether the economic losses related to this impact are considered in the economic feasibility of deploying such systems.","PeriodicalId":156866,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th IEEE International Conference on Industry Applications (INDUSCON)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122435116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This problem is known as optimization of the Economic Load Dispatch (ELD). The objective of this paper is to analyze the application of the Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm (ABC) metaheuristics, considering the incremental cost of fuel and the shutdown of the engines with the highest fuel cost per MWh in UTEs whose installed capacity exceeds the required power demand. Several techniques have been developed to solve the problem of ELD, among them: lambda iteration method, gradient method, Newton method and so on. The results for this study with the application of ABC, considering the shutdown of the generators of higher cost per MWh, obtaining a mean reduction of 6.54% in the total fuel cost, compared to the classic solutions that use all engines of the UTE. In addition to cost reduction, this proposal helps the specialist responsible for the management of the UTE in the decision making of the preventive maintenance of the engines that are not being used at the moment of the optimization, improving not only the generation efficiency, but also the generation planning of the plant.","PeriodicalId":156866,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th IEEE International Conference on Industry Applications (INDUSCON)","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128386671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The power circuit is a full bridge topology composed of two 3-level switched-capacitor cells as legs, where each leg creates an instantaneous average voltage positive or negative, according to the output sinusoidal waveform requirement. The operating principle and the mathematical analysis are presented for continuous conduction mode. The mathematical analysis shows that the proposed topology and modulation promote a natural equalization of voltages on capacitors. Thus, a balance voltage control is not necessary. The resulting frequency on the output filter is four times the switching frequency which allows the size reduction of the output filter. Experimental results were obtained from a prototype with an input voltage of 48 V, switching frequency of 10 kHz, and an output voltage of $110 V_{rms}/50$ Hz for a load of 115 W. The experimental results confirm the mathematical analysis regarding natural voltage balance and output filter frequency.","PeriodicalId":156866,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th IEEE International Conference on Industry Applications (INDUSCON)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114827103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Small wind turbines usually have low output voltage, therefore a conversion system is necessary to increase the voltage value in order to deliver the harvested energy to the commercial grid. This paper proposes a modular three-phase hybrid boost rectifier topology as the input stage for a wind energy conversion system (WECS). The proposed rectifier is a three-phase variation of the hybrid boost rectifier, which uses a ladder switched-capacitor cell to multiply its output voltage gain by an integer conversion ratio. The system is supplied by a small wind turbine with an open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), thus the use of a modular topology is possible and the converter can control the phase currents individually. The system is controlled by a maximum power point tracker (MPPT) that generates a peak current reference for the rectifier, which controls the input current of each phase to obtain a unity power factor. The output dc-link voltage is controlled by an inverter that delivers the extracted energy to the grid. An averaged equivalent circuit is proposed to improve simulation time and to obtain reduced order transfer functions. Theoretical analysis and simulations of a system with three-phase 84 V input, 220 V output phase voltages and 6.5 kVA rated power are presented.","PeriodicalId":156866,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th IEEE International Conference on Industry Applications (INDUSCON)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126109573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though it may not be an adequate solution for high power levels, it is still widely employed instead of soft switching circuits due to inherent simplicity. This work presents an optimized and practical step-by-step design procedure for an RCD snubber applied to a dc-dc buck-boost converter, which is not found in power electronics-related books. It is effectively shown how it is possible to design the snubber and the converter while maintaining acceptable voltage stresses across the switches with reduced losses. An experimental prototype is developed, as it is possible to validate the theoretical analysis properly.","PeriodicalId":156866,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th IEEE International Conference on Industry Applications (INDUSCON)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131366859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, due to their good force to mass ratio, along with their shape recovery capability, even after being subjected to relatively high mechanical stresses, this kind of material has been employed in applications that range from biomedical engineering to robotic joints, and they are always associated with smooth and quiet displacements. Besides, when it comes to linear displacements actuation, shape memory alloy actuators surpass even conventional electrical machines in many aspects. However, one major drawback appears when dealing with such class of actuators: accurate position control of mechanical systems actuated by shape memory alloys is non-trivial, due mainly to the non-linearities associated with the actuator`s phase transition model, which presents a hysteric behavior with respect to its temperature, and the variance of the thermal parameters with respect to time and temperature. In this context, a model independent control approach is proposed in this paper for controlling the deformation of a cantilever beam actuated by a shape memory alloy wire. This control technique relies on an on-line tunned PID controller based on Fuzzy logic developed around a classical Ziegler-Nichols tunned PID controller. At the end, the hybrid Fuzzy-PID controller is compared with the conventional PID controllers previously implemented.","PeriodicalId":156866,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th IEEE International Conference on Industry Applications (INDUSCON)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132211735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, Non Uniform Rational B-Splines are used to represent the heart-line path of roller coasters. Frenet Trihedron is used as the main curve framing, and an additional vector called gravity projection is deducted for generating a framework even at heart-line straights segments and inflection points, when curvature vanishes. A methodology for obtaining track and rails centerlines derived from the heart-line curve is proposed. Using this procedural method, track roll angle is fully determined by local curvature and speed of train. Four cases of study are presented: (1) generating track centerline with Frenet frame, (2) generating track centerline with gravity projection, (3) computing track centerline by the composition of Frenet frame and gravity projection and solving continuity-related problems and (4), generating rails centerlines. It is shown that using composite method all accelerations projected laterally on passengers become null and a continuous, smooth non-jerky track layout is obtained.","PeriodicalId":156866,"journal":{"name":"2018 13th IEEE International Conference on Industry Applications (INDUSCON)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126592856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, cyber attacks such as denial-of-service may damage the information package sent to the control center and compromise the performance of the centralized controller. This paper presents a procedure based on Particle Swarm Optimization for the centralized control design minimizing the number of input-output signals and maximizing the closed loop power system damping. With a reduced number of communication channels, the control center can focus its security system on a few channels.
