A variety of sensors and actuators can be used to have the home environment adapt towards changing circumstances and user preferences. However, the complexity of how these intelligent home automation systems operate is often beyond the comprehension of non-technical users, and adding new technology to an existing infrastructure is often a burden. In this paper, we present a home automation framework designed based on smart widgets with a model driven methodology that raises the level of abstraction to configure home automation equipment. It aims to simplify user-level home automation management by mapping high-level home automation concepts onto a low-level composition and configuration of the automation building blocks with a reverse mapping to simplify the integration of new equipment into existing home automation systems. Experiments have shown that the mappings we proposed are sufficient to represent household appliances to the end user in a simple way and that new mappings can easily be added to our framework.","PeriodicalId":156841,"journal":{"name":"2012 Eighth International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122492226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Applications ranging from climate control to fire management can have significant impact on the quality and cost of these services. However, smart buildings and any technology with direct effect on human safety and life must undergo extensive testing. Virtual testing by means of computer simulation can significantly reduce the cost of testing and, as a result, accelerate the development of novel applications. Unfortunately, building physically-accurate simulation codes can be labor intensive. To address this problem, we propose a framework for rapid, physically-accurate virtual testing. The proposed framework supports analytical modeling of both a discrete distributed system as well as the physical environment that hosts it. The discrete models supported are accurate enough to allow the automatic generation of a dedicated programming framework that will help the developer in the implementation of these systems. The physical environment models supported are equational specifications that are accurate enough to produce running simulation codes. Combined, these two frameworks enable simulating both active systems and physical environments. These simulations can be used to monitor the behavior and gather statistics about the performance of an application in the context of precise virtual experiments. To illustrate the approach, we present models of Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems. Using these models, we construct virtual experiments that illustrate how the approach can be used to optimize energy and cost of climate control for a building.","PeriodicalId":156841,"journal":{"name":"2012 Eighth International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116165040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To reach this goal, we have developed a system based on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) in which high performance hardware modules can be reconfigured on-line according to the necessities of the system at each moment. Two different implementations have been carried out to measure the time required to reconfigure each module and also to measure the FPGA resources that can be saved if we keep configured only the modules that are required at each time. The Obtained results show how this technique offers advantages in cost, size and power when applied to embedded systems for intelligent environments.","PeriodicalId":156841,"journal":{"name":"2012 Eighth International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"20 42","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113962779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The distinctive characteristics of this proposal are: it takes into account the changing needs of the environment's dwellers, that is, the IE is sensitive to the context, and it allows the user to move among the ecosystem's elements freely. With these features, the ecosystem manages all required information to satisfy the users' needs, even when they are in transit between two IE's. The key element in our proposal is an ontology that is used in three main processes in our ecosystem. First of all, it works together with sensor information to provide the sensitivity of the context, second, it is used to decide whether local resources are enough to fulfill user needs or if it is necessary to use the ecosystem's resources, and third, the ontology is also useful in the interaction among different IE's to satisfy some users' requirements.","PeriodicalId":156841,"journal":{"name":"2012 Eighth International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"84 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114093361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inherent complexities of the process make mathematical modeling difficult, hindering the control quality demands of conventional methods. Neural Network adaptive data based technology has been successfully applied in industrial applications since these rely on highly nonlinear modeling systems and are able to provide enough rich data for high control models the required process relationships. The focus of this paper is a Neural-Fuzzy approach for optimizing injection molding parameters settings. The approach consists of design of experiments (DOE) and Neural-Fuzzy systems.","PeriodicalId":156841,"journal":{"name":"2012 Eighth International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121401973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To utilize this technology for the creation of location aware intelligent environments, the next steps are to come up with microscopic traffic values. This work proposes a solution for this question, namely, a Bluetooth localization and path reproduction of individual persons. Our approach applies radio signal strength fingerprinting. We introduce and evaluate this approach for varying granularities and mobile phone types. The result is an accurate reproduction of pedestrian position and route choice in a complex facility.","PeriodicalId":156841,"journal":{"name":"2012 Eighth International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125421343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present a general profile ontology to model the basic concepts related to the profile assignment process. Based on this ontology, we propose an adaptive mechanism to guide the interactions between user and broker agents aimed to select the most suitable profile taking into account the user's requirements and preferences. Broker agents estimate the suitability of the profiles using trust and reputation information coming from its own experiences or from other brokers. Under uncertainty conditions, similarity between two set of user's requirements and preferences is also used. The evaluation of suitability of each suggested profile to the user's requirements and the similarity between two set ofuser's requirements are based on the service discovery processes proposed by WSMO.","PeriodicalId":156841,"journal":{"name":"2012 Eighth International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124575160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
