Kerala witnessed one of the worst floods in 2018. Objective: To explore the flood-related experiences, the role of the community in dealing with the disaster and strategies used for the management of floods in the selected districts of Kerala. Methodology: This qualitative study was done among flood-affected victims residing in three selected districts of Kerala from December 2018 to June 2019. The qualitative data were collected through 16 in-depth interviews and six focus group discussions using a topic guide till data saturation. A sociogram was plotted, and the thematic analysis of data with data triangulation was done to validate the findings. Results: The study identified natural, man-made and supernatural causes of floods. Most respondents described the event as the “Most unexpected disaster of the century.” Floods caused severe psychological trauma to the victims. The elderly and children were the most affected age groups, with behavioral changes noted among children. Fishermen came as “life saviors.” The majority of the victims were shifted to relief camps and were extremely happy with the facilities provided in the camp. The most difficult challenges faced were moving people at night during the flood event and post-flood cleaning. The support provided by government, nongovernmental organizations, and the local community was very much appreciated. Many were grateful for the initial response by the local youth community in their areas. Participants shared that they understood the true meaning of unity and realized the temporary nature of worldly possessions. Self-help group formation and prayer were identified as the most commonly used coping strategy. Conclusion: Addressing man-made causes of floods, empowering local communities, ensuring disaster preparedness, providing psychological support, and preserving the environment are the major strategies that emerged for the effective management of floods in future.","PeriodicalId":15592,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University","volume":"18 1","pages":"18 - 23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42688028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Giant lipomas are those that measure more than 10 cm in length or more than 1000 g in weight. There is a possibility of sarcomatous change in them but it is not always the rule. Lipoma and liposarcoma can be differentiated on the magnetic resonance imaging features of tumor size, stranding, nodularity, T2 signal, and contrast enhancement. The existence of thin septa helps identify lipomas and distinguishes them from well-differentiated liposarcomas, which have thick and irregular septa and fat necrosis at times. The open surgical approach is the best for the complete excision of giant lipomas without any recurrence.","PeriodicalId":15592,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University","volume":"18 1","pages":"97 - 99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46990246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adult responses to different attires of treating doctors have been well-documented, though there has been very little information regarding child patients on this aspect. The aim of the present study was to assess the preferences of child patients toward the dress code of their treating doctors and to relate the influence of age and previous exposure on such preferences. Materials and Methods: The present study was designed as a cross-sectional study wherein data were collected from 2500 child patients belonging to primary, secondary, and high school levels with the help of a questionnaire. A total of 10 photographs of 5 male and 5 female pediatric consultants of full size in the same background and stance of models in different dress codes were shown to the selected participants while they were asked to give their preferences in order. The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis wherein statistical tests used included Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests and linear association. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The findings of the present study suggested that 35.6% of subjects preferred a white coat followed by scrubs with cartoons (21.8%) for male pediatric consultants while 38.2% of the subjects preferred a white coat followed by formal attire (28.4%) for female pediatric consultants. Furthermore, age had a significant impact on the preferences. Conclusions: White coat was the most preferred attire followed by scrubs with cartoons and formal attire.","PeriodicalId":15592,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University","volume":"18 1","pages":"74 - 78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42890545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In India, a vast proportion of agricultural workers are poor and hence they have a financial disadvantage. Catastrophic health expenditure without a mechanism of robust social security measures in place further deteriorates the socioeconomic position of such agricultural workers. Social security measures act as a support system at the time of health-related crisis and hence this article reviews existing social security measures for agricultural workers in India and related barriers to their utilization. The review suggests using awareness protocols that should reach the community, using their own language (for better compliance), and informing them about how to avail of these social security measures. They should be provided with family support to reduce their burden economically and to reduce their excessive stress level. This, in turn, will help to improve their socioeconomic status. The Indian agricultural workers lack general awareness about how social security works, and we lack good digital social equipment as well, which needs intervention and to apply on it. India has many social security schemes for agricultural workers but many of the target beneficiaries do not benefit from them or are excluded from these schemes because of procedural barriers. Hence, the utilization of social security schemes by agricultural workers remains poor. We need to further research into the measures that can be taken to increase this utilization so that agricultural workers can get benefit of the existing social security schemes.","PeriodicalId":15592,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University","volume":"18 1","pages":"135 - 140"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41707770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Those fetuses are prone to perinatal morbidity and mortality. IUGR remains prevalent in developing countries even after advancements in obstetric care. Aim: The current scoping analysis is conducted to review observational studies reporting on various sociodemographic, medical and obstetrics, and placental risk factors associated with IUGR. Methods: We performed a systematic meta-analysis of relevant studies obtained by electronic databases PubMed and Google Scholar from 2010 to 2022. Relevant research articles were searched forward and backward. Citation searches were also undertaken and all relevant literature were included. Of the 68 studies reviewed, 10 studies were included. Results: Pooled results after investigating 10 articles show that younger maternal age, low-socioeconomic status, primiparity, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, and anemia are significantly associated with the risk of developing IUGR. Conclusion: By studying the risk factors, we will be able to identify the high-risk group. Focus on early detection and high-quality antenatal care will help to overcome the problem of IUGR in the community.","PeriodicalId":15592,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University","volume":"18 1","pages":"130 - 134"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48976881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Metabolic syndrome increases the health burden and mortality rate among middle-aged people. Early diagnosis of the risk factor associated with this pathological disorder can be a help to overcome this life-threatening pathological disorder by delaying disease progression. Materials and Methods: A total of 400 patients with metabolic syndrome are identified. Patient blood samples were collected and processed. Biochemical parameters include fasting blood sugar and lipid profiles which include TC, HDL, LDL very-LDL (VLDL), and triglycerides were analyzed using an autoanalyzer. Altered fasting blood sugar level and lipid profile are used to diagnose the status of diabetes and cardiovascular disorder. Results: The fasting blood sugar levels of the patients were in the range of prediabetic condition and so the patients are more prevalent to diabetes mellitus. An altered lipid profile ratio with a decreased level of good cholesterol and increased level of bad cholesterol was also observed in association with prediabetic condition. Conclusion: The altered levels of these biochemical parameters in metabolic syndrome patients gives the idea about its association of prediabetes with cardiovascular disorders among the Indian population.","PeriodicalId":15592,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University","volume":"18 1","pages":"30 - 33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46256044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The major effects of the COVID-19 infection were on the respiratory and circulatory systems, which lasted for a long period after treatment with COVID-19. Important biomarkers of respiratory system showed elevated levels even after completion of medication for COVID-19. Hematological and inflammatory biomarkers such as D-dimer, serum ferritin, C-reactive protein (CRP), serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) were thoroughly assessed. The SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were also compared. Although few serum markers like D-dimer has seen to show more associated severe complications than other unreliable markers like CRP. CRP just being the biomarker for inflammation does not grossly describe the forecast of the destruction caused by the virus. However, markers like LDH have shown to be great for describing the progressive damage of the virus leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The serum levels of D-dimer showed elevation till 3 months' post infection. A few hematological markers like serum ferritin proved to be vital for prognosis of the infection Prognosis of fatal diseases like covid-19 to Hematological markers like Serum ferritin proved their prognostic value. The company of IL-6 in the peripheral blood might be used as a prognosticator of COVID-19 development. In patients who needed intensive care unit care, prothrombin time values were higher. Male patients had higher levels of soluble IL-2R, IL-6, ferritin, procalcitonin, LDH, and hsCRP in their blood than female patients. The sperm samples did not show the presence of coronavirus proving it had just minimal effect on reproductive health and that no damage was seen on the performance as well.","PeriodicalId":15592,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University","volume":"18 1","pages":"141 - 145"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43286002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
