The post-colonial discourse criteria of appropriation, abrogation, untranslated terms, hybridity, and affiliation served as the foundation for this study’s text criticism. Since this is the fundamental theme of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s writings in Purple Hibiscus, it implies that African people’s heritage and identity are valued by everyone, particularly those who are quasi, and that the colonial process can be truly ended on the African continent. There must be a different culture to replace the lost indigenous culture.","PeriodicalId":155026,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of English","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125709899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To discover the causes this study has followed two research questions regarding the possible reasons behind making spelling errors and the learners’ attitude towards spelling errors. A few previous pieces of research have already been done on this ground focusing on learners’ spelling errors, but they have hardly been focused specifically on university students. This research paper uses a quantitative method. In this study, one hundred and forty-seven university students participated in questionnaire surveys. This paper reveals the spelling errors, which Bangladeshi students make, are due to a variety of factors, including the education system, the influence of modern technology on students’ learning, and social media usage. It is suggested that Teacher’s awareness and avoidance of modern tools would be a possible solution to the spelling problem.","PeriodicalId":155026,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of English","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123652645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some famous works of literature, based on mythology are written by writers like Devdutt Pattanaik, Amish Tripathi, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Volga, Kevin Missal, SarathKomarraju and Krishna Udayashankar. These writers try to reinterpret mythological characters like Shiva, Rama, Draupadi, Amba, Krishna etc. Kavita Kane is one of the popular woman writers of India who renders Indian mythological texts and writes novels. Her ficitons are known for portrayals of the mythical characters who are less discussed. She picks up marginalized women characters from the mythical literature of India and retells their stories. She raises isssues of identity, individuality, gender, caste, femininity and patriarchy in her fictional works. In her novels, Karna’s Wife and Fisher Queen’s Dynasty, Kane has woven issues of gender and caste. Both of them are based on the Mahabharata. She retells the stories of Uruvi, Karna’s wife and Satyavati, Shantanu’s wife from their perspectives and explore their struggles against discriminations based on gender and caste. The novelist depicts these women characters with their courage, confidence, individuality and power to resist the class or caste-based violence. As modern literary works, their intersectionality is evident and they can be examined keeping in mind multidisciplinary approach. The present article examines caste consciousness as expressed by Kane in her Karna’s Wife and Fisher Queen’s Dynasty.","PeriodicalId":155026,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of English","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133976263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the contradictions exist in the literature, ELP may oscillate among various groups of graduates grounded on the socioeconomic contextual of Bangladesh. In these circumstances, the study focuses on the hindrances of ELP among the diverse social groups of graduates and how they cope with interferences in career building. The study was conducted in a sequential explanatory design method where the survey and interviews were directed to collect data. The data were collected in random sampling technique for survey while interviews were in stratified random sampling technique. Then the study crossed descriptive analysis in quantitative and thematic analyses in qualitative for triangulation purposes. The study indicates discrimination as ELP’s hindrances strongly varies based on their education level. In contrast, dissatisfaction varies according to income level, and economic imbalance varies among the living status of Bangladeshi graduates. However, the study suggests to increase awareness of language use in career building among the graduates and concern authorities. Moreover, the study recommends to conduct more research on the language use in career building in different dimensions.","PeriodicalId":155026,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of English","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134629740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Safe Harbour virtually harbours on mutual faith between an American widow Danielle who is also a social worker and a divorcee form New Zealand named Matt, who happens to be an artist too. In the novel, the youngest daughter of Danielle performs angelic role to bring about a transformation in thoughts and beliefs leading to the union of her mother with Matt. It seems as if the romance between them is more of Platonic than anything else leading to carrying out humanitarian responsibilities. Jack is one of its unique kinds of literary writings based on the love between two young persons Jack and Della of the two well-known racesof America. With the backdrop of the controversy that juxtaposes racial problems and human attributes with the paradigm of Calvinist romance which advocates for the stability and security of a strict religious system in a world that he finds unstable and even absurd without it. It examines how the author has tactfully revealed the pre-ordained bond of love between the two characters leaving behind the so- called social and religious dogmas. There is a reference to Black Lives Matter in the novel admixed with racial trauma whereas in the thematic context, it repeatedly investigates the connection between loneliness and eternal damnation; the soul’s isolation and its torment.","PeriodicalId":155026,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of English","volume":"252 Pt A 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116662688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Covid-19 pandemic has encouraged the global use of blended learning approaches. It is a novel method that blends traditional and modern teaching-learning paradigms and is becoming more popular, providing value to the learning environment by incorporating technology. It not only changes the way information is delivered, but it also redefines the old roles of education and opens new vistas of learning opportunities. Various universities, colleges, and other educational institutions across the world are establishing deliberate strategies for employing blended learning. Blended learning environments have been shown to outperform traditional classroom education, but they do not prove to be superior, till date. This paper seeks to investigate this paradox and recommends that the government, authorities, instructors as well as students must establish an engaged, collaborative, technologically advanced and supportive teaching-learning environment of global competence in order to fully realize the potential of BL.","PeriodicalId":155026,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of English","volume":"199 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123371827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results revealed that the most preferred strategies were cognitive in nature. Moreover, the Iranian EFL undergraduates were intellectually enriched by most of what they read and enjoy reading materials that teach them the things that they did not know before. Also, it was found that the most observable effect of gender was on interpreting the text while reading, followed by reading the text again when some parts are difficult to understand. In both of these cognitive strategies, females outperformed the male students in using these two strategies. Furthermore, no correlation was observed between the most applicable reading strategy (b6: I read the text again when some parts are difficult to understand) and reading comprehension. What’s more, there was no correlation between reading maturity and reading comprehension. However, it was proved that there was a significant correlation between gender and reading comprehension. Reading maturity and the most applicable reading comprehension strategy (b6) had no significant correlation with reading comprehension as shown by the multiple regression results while gender revealed such a correlation. There was no significant correlation between the most applicable reading strategy (b6) and reading maturity. Furthermore, there was no relationship between gender and the mentioned reading maturity subgroups (c, d, e, and g) but gender correlated between subgroups f and h. At last, it was found that there was no relationship between gender and the most applicable reading strategy.","PeriodicalId":155026,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of English","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133672132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to report the level of engagement in the online classes in addition to the feeling of the teachers and students towards it. Only a few studies on students’ engagement in the university-level online classes in Bangladesh have yet been conducted. To find the in-depth perfective result, this study has used a quantitative method where one hundred and thirty-eight participants including teachers and students took part in questionnaire surveys. The questionnaires were designed to study three types of engagements like participatory, performance, and skill engagements in virtual education at the level of higher study in Bangladesh. Through a quantitative analysis, our findings show that, though the students get themselves involved in online platforms, their level of engagement varies in terms of these three types of engagements. Data also revealed that the teacher-student interaction level in the online classes is not satisfactory though it lessens the students’ anxiety level. The purpose of this study was to see the learners’ engagement and their attitudes towards online classes. The only limitation is that it is only a small and quantitative study whereas a qualitative study may help to get into more depth the result of it.","PeriodicalId":155026,"journal":{"name":"Shanlax International Journal of English","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132997457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
