It uses a recency list and a frequency list to balance between access recency and access frequency. In this paper, we re-examine the ARC policy and demonstrate its weaknesses: 1) some entries in the recency list are not recent; and 2) the constraint of the recency list length limits the capability in identifying weak locality. We then propose a new policy, Shadow ARC (SHARC), to overcome those weaknesses with shadow recency cache management. In SHARC, we track the virtual time of the accesses. We allow the shadow recency cache to grow on demand, but proactively identify unpromising entries for eviction based on a comprehensive eviction criterion. While the criterion is calculated from the virtual time, we provide the theoretical justification that in scenarios of strong locality, it tightly bounds the recency distance of the entries. In scenarios of relatively weak locality, the criterion dynamically determines the size of the shadow recency cache based on the activeness of the frequency cache items and the promotion activities of the recency items. In this cloud computing model, the provider opaquely handles resource management tasks such as resource provisioning, deployment, and auto-scaling. The only resource management task that developers are still in charge of is selecting how much resources are allocated to each worker instance. However, selecting the optimal size of serverless functions is quite challenging, so developers often neglect it despite its significant cost and performance benefits. Existing approaches aiming to automate serverless functions resource sizing require dedicated performance tests, which are time-consuming to implement and maintain. In this paper, we introduce an approach to predict the optimal resource size of a serverless function using monitoring data from a single resource size. As our approach does not require dedicated performance tests, it enables cloud providers to implement resource sizing on a platform level and automate the last resource management task associated with serverless functions. We evaluate our approach on four different serverless applications on AWS, where it predicts the execution time of the other memory sizes based on monitoring data for a single memory size with an average prediction error of 15.3%. Since the volume of logs produced from numerous distributed components is overwhelming, it requires us to employ automated processing. The first step of automated log processing is to convert streams of log lines into the sequence of log format IDs, called log templates. A log template serves as a base string with unfilled parts from which logs are generated during runtime by substitution of contextual information. The problem of log template discovery from the volume of collected logs poses a great challenge due to the semi-structured nature of the logs and the computational overheads. Our investigation reveals that existing techniques show various limitations. We approach the log template discovery problem as search-based learning by applying the ILP (Inductive Logic Programming) framework. The algorithm core consists of narrowing down the logs into smaller sets by analyzing value compositions on selected log column positions. Our evaluation shows that it produces accurate log templates from diverse application logs with small computational costs compared to existing methods. Unlike the existing approaches that often depend on smart contracts where digital assets are first locked in a vault, and then released according to event triggers, the event based transaction system encodes event outcome as part of the UTXO note and safeguards event privacy by shielding it with zero-knowledge proof based protocols such that associations between UTXO notes and events are hidden from the validators. Without relying on any triggering mechanism, the proposed transaction system separates event processing from the transaction processing where confidential event based UTXO notes (event based UTXOs or conditional UTXOs) can be transferred freely with full privacy in an asynchronous manner, only with their asset values conditional to the linked event outcomes. The main advantage of such design is that it enables free trade of event based digital assets and prevents the assets from being locked. We implemented the proposed transaction system by extending the Zerocoin data model and protocols. However, Java applications running in untrusted clouds are vulnerable to various forms of privileged attacks. The emergence of trusted execution environments (TEEs) such as Intel SGX mitigates this problem. TEEs protect code and data in secure enclaves inaccessible to untrusted software, including the kernel and hypervisors. To efficiently use TEEs, developers must manually partition their applications into trusted and untrusted parts, in order to reduce the size of the trusted computing base (TCB) and minimise the risks of security vulnerabilities. However, partitioning applications poses two important challenges: (i) ensuring efficient object communication between the partitioned components, and (ii) ensuring the consistency of garbage collection between the parts, especially with memory-managed languages such as Java. We present Montsalvat, a tool which provides a practical and intuitive annotation-based partitioning approach for Java applications destined for secure enclaves. Montsalvat provides an RMI-like mechanism to ensure inter-object communication, as well as consistent garbage collection across the partitioned components. We implement Montsalvat with GraalVM native-image, a tool for compiling Java applications ahead-of-time into standalone native executables that do not require a JVM at runtime. In multi-tenant hosts with high utilization, resource contention at the system kernel often leads to inefficient handling of the container I/O. Assuming a distributed storage architecture for scalability, resource sharing is particularly problematic at the client hosts serving the applications of competing tenants. Although increasing the scalability of a system kernel can improve resource efficiency, it is highly challenging to refactor the kernel for fair access to system services. As a realistic alternative, we isolate the storage I/O paths of different tenants by serving them with distinct clients running at user level. We introduce the Danaus client architecture to let each tenant access the container root and application filesystems over a private host path. We developed a Danaus prototype that integrates a union filesystem with a Ceph distributed filesystem client and a configurable shared cache. Across different host configurations, workloads and systems, Danaus achieves improved performance stability because it handles I/O with reserved per-tenant resources and avoids intensive kernel locking. Danaus offers up to 14.4x higher throughput than a popular kernel-based client under conditions of I/O contention. In comparison to a FUSE-based user-level client, Danaus also reduces by 14.2x the time to start 256 high-performance webservers. We observe that the best allocation of resources to deep learning engines (or microservices) in a pipeline, and the best configuration of parameters for each engine vary over time, often at a timescale of minutes or even seconds based on the dynamic content in the video. We leverage these observations to develop Magic-Pipe, a self-optimizing video analytic pipeline that leverages AI techniques to periodically self-optimize. First, we propose a new, adaptive resource allocation technique to dynamically balance the resource usage of different microservices, based on dynamic video content. Then, we propose an adaptive microservice parameter tuning technique to balance the accuracy and performance of a microservice, also based on video content. Finally, we propose two different approaches to reduce unnecessary computations due to unavoidable mismatch of independently designed, re-usable deep-learning engines: a deep learning approach to improve the feature extractor performance by filtering inputs for which no features can be extracted, and a low-overhead graph-theoretic approach to minimize redundant computations across frames. In this paper, leveraging Proof-of-Work and Raft, we propose a new BFT consensus protocol called Prosecutor that dynamically penalizes suspected faulty behavior and suppresses Byzantine servers over time. Prosecutor obstructs Byzantine servers from being elected in leader election by imposing hash computation on new election campaigns. Furthermore, Prosecutor applies message authentication to achieve secure log replication and maintains a similar message-passing scheme as Raft. The exchange of model updates is managed either by a central entity or in a decentralized way, e.g. by a blockchain. However, the strong generalization across all clients makes these approaches unsuited for non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) data. We propose a unified approach to decentralization and personalization in federated learning that is based on a directed acyclic graph (DAG) of model updates. Instead of training a single global model, clients specialize on their local data while using the model updates from other clients dependent on the similarity of their respective data. This specialization implicitly emerges from the DAG-based communication and selection of model updates. Thus, we enable the evolution of specialized models, which focus on a subset of the data and therefore cover non-IID data better than federated learning in a centralized or blockchain-based setup. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed solution is the first to unite personalization and poisoning robustness in fully decentralized federated learning. Our evaluation shows that the specialization of models emerges directly from the DAG-based communication of model updates on three different datasets. Previous works have demonstrated that migrating application execution at run-time across heterogeneous-ISA CPUs can yield significant performance and energy gains, with relatively little programmer effort. However, FPGAs have often been overlooked in that context: hardware acceleration using FPGAs involves statically implementing select application functions, which prohibits dynamic and transparent migration. We present Xar-Trek, a new compiler and run-time software framework that overcomes this limitation. Xar-Trek compiles an application for several CPU ISAs and select application functions for acceleration on an FPGA, allowing execution migration between heterogeneous-ISA CPUs and FPGAs at run-time. Xar-Trek's run-time monitors server workloads and migrates application functions to an FPGA or to heterogeneous-ISA CPUs based on a scheduling policy. We develop a heuristic policy that uses application workload profiles to make scheduling decisions.
