Programs that allow users to create and manipulate attributed directed graphs on graphics workstations have therefore become common. However, the programming effort required to produce such applications is significant and usually involves interaction with a complex graphics package. We present an Extended Directed Graph Editor, EDGE, that provides application programmers with an object-oriented editor for generic directed graphs. Existing AI systems are not suitable for many applications because of their unacceptable real-time response and complexity. An intelligent cell memory system (ICMS) is proposed which is capable of providing improved real-time performance. A prototype implementation of ICMS using dedicated bit-slice processors which perform parallel garbage collection with bounded separation time is described. The system uses an optimised implementation of Baker's algorithm to give high speed performance. The monitoring of the quality of an installation is referred to as an installation audit. The modern statistical methods used include the following sampling, rating, and reporting methods. (it A sampling or resource allocation approach, that is not only cost-effective but incorporates recent quality history very precisely to effect an appropriate increase or decrease in sampling intensity, selects installation jobs and determines the proportion of each job chosen to audit. (ii) Quality rating methods optimally combine current quality data with recent past data to make a better statistical evaluation of the current quality of installations for each type of product for the current rating period. (iii) Graphical methods for displaying the quality rating results provide interval estimates of current quality and a trend line on the long run average of quality for installations of each product. It decreases the demand for traditional systems development projects, and provides faster response to user needs. The key factor to promote end-user systems development is the existence of friendly and 'MIS hygienic' end-user system development methodologies. In this paper a new approach for end-user systems development - Management Through Information Systems - is discussed, and a methodology for developing model oriented decision support systems using this approach is reviewed. The characteristics necessary in an expert system building language are detailed. Languages that are unable to provide for many different types of expert systems to be built are not given much weight. Six relatively standard high level languages are studied, which include FORTRAN, Modula-2, Ada**, Pascal, LISP and Prolog. Some of the newly developed expert system building languages are also studied. The study was done in conjunction with the development of the expert system known as Fess and a discussion of the reasons for the choice of its development language are given. The construction of the system has provided further insights for the language study.
