The rake face length of cemented carbide (WC/Co) cutting inserts is shortened. The aim of this research is to examine the effect of shortened tools on machining performance in terms of the main force, thrust force, and chip-tool contact length and to compare them with regular cutting tools. The following restricted tool parameters are examined: length of rake face, alpha angle (the angle between the rake face and the supporting face), and edge radius. It is concluded that restricted contact cutting tools generate lower cutting force and thrust force and consequently lower the energy necessary for machining. The length of rake face, the angle between the rake face and the supporting face, and edge radius all have influence on cutting force in their own ways. This research provides insightful guidance for designing restricted contact cutting tools. Four main areas are dealt with: geometric, kinematic, functional and interaction modelling. Basic (stereotypical) kinematic and functional behaviours are defined in a parametric and reusable form so that they can be allocated to classes as well as individual objects. Inverse kinematic behaviours are defined according to dedicated algorithms for particular kinematic chain configurations. Basic behaviours are synthesised into more complex ones that are less generic, by definition, and referring to larger hierarchical trees. A series of paradigms are presented regarding a CNC turn–milling centre served by an industrial robot. The extensible library of reusable behaviours and the proposed methodology for defining and integrating them in VR platforms provide structured tools for developing manufacturing system design and operation applications. Historically, vibration–based condition indicators from employed component monitoring equipment are derived from both temporal and spectral domain analysis. However, these indicators failed to accurately capture high order correlations for the gearbox study addressed in this paper. An improved approach is necessary to overcome limitations of traditional vibrational monitoring techniques. The proposed condition indicator is derived from the Morlet continuous wavelet .transform The power spectra obtained from the wavelet transform coefficients at a certain scale or frequency are added together and then are normalised to one composite signal, denoted by a numeric index. Concepts of the wavelet index are discussed. This index is applied using real–world vibration data from a tail rotor gearbox with an output seal leak as part of condition–based maintenance practices. Results demonstrate potential of the proposed wavelet index to more effectively capture the fault when compared to gearbox condition indicators. Through holes of 62 mm depth and diameters ranging from 3.055 to 3.316 mm are drilled. The hole quality are characterised by surface roughness value (Ra), depth averaged radial overcut (DAROC) and hole profile. The experimental results show that process parameters such as peak current and pulse on–time are significant parameters on Ra and the parameter pulse on–time is significant on DAROC. Analysis of hole profiles show three distinct segments along the depth of hole: wide mouth at the top; barrel shaped at the midway; narrow end at the bottom. Further, surface topography of EDM drilled surfaces are studied at different depths along the hole using SEM and are reported here. Due to their twisted feature, the application of flank milling to these blades would inevitably cause significant interference between the cutter edge and the machined surfaces. In view of the advantages of flank milling operations, this paper proposes a combined approach to flank milling these blade surfaces with acceptable precision and fairly high efficiency. Centring on the minimisation of the interference, the non–developable blade surface is divided into a number of strips, the cutter profile is modified accordingly, and then the tool paths are calculated strip by strip. Along with the basic idea, related issues are investigated in detail focusing on the strip width determination, cutter profile modification, and cutter location calculation. For practical use of the proposed approach, necessary algorithms are also provided. Finally, a case study is presented, together with numerical simulation of the cutting process. The results show that the proposed approach is not only feasible but also much more efficient than the conventional point milling method. Important process parameters include the tool rpm, travel speed, tool dimensions and the downward force on the tool. Heating is caused by rubbing of the tool faces against the workpiece and by visco–plastic dissipation of mechanical energy. There is a unique combination of shear and normal forces in FSW. In this present study gaps of FSW were determined and two very much important process parameters effect on FSW (i.e., tool plunging force and shoulder size) was presented. This study investigates the effect of tool plunging force and tool shoulder size on heat generation of FSW by using 3–D finite element (FE) transient thermal analysis. It was noticed that both plunging force and shoulder diameter have considerable effect on FSW process. Suitable correlations have been made between shoulder diameter vs. peak temperature and tool plunging force vs. peak temperature. Also generalised optimum parameters were established by considering the above said parameters. The present developed FE model results were well matched with experimental results. Each job is associated with a due date and a volume. In order to guarantee customer service level, each job has to be delivered to customer before or on its due date. It is assumed that the job which is delivered to customer before its due date will occur an earliness penalty. The objective is to minimise the total logistics cost under two kinds of due-date conditions. We formulate the problem as a non-linear model, then develop a Tabu algorithm. To verify performance of this algorithm, we establish a dominance-related exact algorithm for the small-size problems and a lower bound for the large-size problems. Numerical experiments show that the proposed Tabu algorithm performs efficiently in terms of both solution quality and running time.","PeriodicalId":154059,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Manuf. In this paper, Mamdani-based fuzzy logic (FL) controller has been developed to predict the quality of the parts produced using plastic injection moulding machine. It is to be noted that the quality of the parts produced depends on various geometrical requirements, such as global warpage, lower edge surface planarity and hole circularity of the manufactured part. However, these geometrical requirements depend on various input process parameters, namely melting temperature, mould temperature, packing time and packing pressure. As the input-output relationship of the injection moulding process is highly non-linear, FL technique is considered to model the process. It is important to note that the performance of the FL system depends on its knowledge base (that is, rule base and database) developed by the human expertise. In the present paper, genetic algorithm (GA) is used to optimise the optimal knowledge base of the FL system. Further, the prediction accuracy of the developed models has been tested with the help of 20 test cases and found reasonably good accuracy.","PeriodicalId":154059,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Manuf. HS-EDMM is an efficient technology for micromachining of electrically conductive difficult to machine engineering materials. A predictive artificial neural network (ANN) model for the material removal rate (MRR), tool wear rate and hole taper (Ta) in HS-EDMM process has been proposed in the present paper. For this purpose, MATLAB with the neural network toolbox (nntool) has been used. Training of the model has been performed with data from an extensive series of HS-EDMM experiments on Ti-6Al-4V thin sheet workpiece material. The proposed model uses the gap voltage and capacitance of capacitor as input parameters. The reported results indicate that the proposed ANN model has been found to predict accurately HS-EDMM process response for chosen process conditions.","PeriodicalId":154059,"journal":{"name":"Int. The employed plasma torch is a widely adopted tool to generate stable plasma jet. The purpose of investigating and improving the performance of plasma jet in high pressure, fluid finite element analysis is to study the influences of gas flow and torch structure features on the distribution of reactive radicals outside the discharge zone. Afterwards, atomic emission spectroscopy is utilised in plasma jet experiments to test the simulation results. Surface roughness and removal profile after machining are also detected to demonstrate the validity of structure modification. It is indicated that species and concentration of reactive radicals in plasma are not changed remarkably by convergence structure. Instead, the convergence structure is helpful to eject regular plasma flame so as to achieve predictable removal profile. Meanwhile, the optimal parameters are determined for new torch, with which higher removal rate and more favourable profile are obtained.","PeriodicalId":154059,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Manuf.
